message 1: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments okay, so in my family, they spelled my name with only one "l" but that spelling was not uncommon in french canadian families living in new england prior to 1950. there have been some really unusual names in my family: both grandfathers were named Napoleon. My mother's mother was named Albina, my mother's name was Laurette Laura on her birth certificate but Marie Eva on her baptismal certificate. One of my great grandmothers was named Josephine. I had a great uncle Oscar. I have a cousin named Blanche. My aunt wanted my folks to name me Noella. I like Michele better. I had an uncle named Leander. Anyone else out there with unusual names or name spellings in their family? I have a Rose Alma who we always called Alma and an Alma Rose we always call by her full name.

Kristina | 136 comments I had a great-grandmother named Alta. Another named Pearlina. I heard that my great-grandfather's name was Agitaire (not sure of spelling) but he later changed it to Edgar. I have a grandfather named French.

message 4: by Spellbound (new)

Spellbound (spellboundreads) | 117 comments I had a grandmother named Cesira.
I know a Nerina, not quite sure how she is related to me.
A cousin named Celeste, yes, he is a man with a girl's name and an uncle Robertino.

I love the name Leander. Tragic destiny tied to it, but beautiful name.

message 5: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments my dad's name was Alphonse. When I was pregnant he told me,"for god's sake if it is a boy, do NOT name him after me." everyone called my dad "buzz" because he liked to talk so much. that's where I got it from.

Spellbound (spellboundreads) | 117 comments I know, I'm weird, but I like ancient names, better if there's a history to them.

Leander is a cool name. It reminds me of the book The Grandmothers: A Family Portrait, which I highly recommend to everyone.

message 13: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Leander is a town in Texas.

Phil | 11837 comments Lobstergirl wrote: "Leander is a cool name. It reminds me of the book The Grandmothers: A Family Portrait, which I highly recommend to everyone."

Leander, he would have lived many a fair year, though Hero had turned nun, if it had not been for a hot midsummer night; for, good youth, he went but forth to wash him in the Hellespont and being taken with the cramp was drowned and the foolish coroners of that age found it was 'Hero of Sestos.'

message 15: by Lori (new)

Lori I just have typical old Hebrew names in my ancestry. And my Dad, the first generation of American, is Jacob Joseph Jacobson.

message 16: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 5 comments My dad's name is Hedley Charles Clemo - which I think is awesome, but he hates! None of us really have any idea where his first name/our surname come from; they don't seem very English. And my mum's name is Abimbola (she's British Nigerian).

message 17: by Lori (last edited Nov 25, 2010 09:24AM) (new)

Lori Oooooh Abimbola, nice!

I'm trying to figure out what Hedley Charles Clemo came from. And I get Viking and Francs.

message 18: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 5 comments Haha yeah - she has to shorten it to Bola for all us Brits who find it hard to pronounce. Hedley and Bola - they make a distinctive couple :)

Viking, eh? Nice - maybe that'll mollify him a bit!

message 19: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments pretty much all our family first names are french because my 2 grandfathers came from french Quebec and all my great grandparents as well. when I got married the second time I kept wondering who the wasp was and it was me! Both my birth surname and 1st married surname were french. *BUT, my great-grandmother on my dad's side was half native american. the story was that it was an arranged when my great grandfather was on a fishing trip and met her father. her birth name was Josephine Philibot/Fillibot and she married robert roberge somewhere in quebec in the late 19th century. so, i am 1/16 native american. probably more since a lot of french canadians intermarried with native americans. my teeth confirmed that I am part native american.

message 20: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) An ancestor of mine was named Aquilla. I have a friend whose last name is Plank. As a joke, I told her to name her son Redwood, and she did.

message 21: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) And you said, "Cedar later, Plank."

message 22: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) Woody answer ???

message 23: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I sawdust his eyes and couldn't tell.

message 24: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesslie) We have a Bucky. Swear to god. And an Onie-Mae. Gotta love the deep south.

message 25: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Are they siblings, Bucky, Swear-to-god, and Onie-Mae?

message 26: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 21 comments My grandfather's name was Casper. I think it was common for his day, but when we did family trees in school the kids all laughed and made ghost jokes.

message 27: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments Clovis is a common family name on my husbands side. I get a lot of flack from my family because of my kids names...Asia and Makaio...but they can all kiss my ass because I like their names :D
In my defense, it's really hard to pick first names with a last name like Beaver. My mom thought I should name my son Philip...I had to say Philip Beaver to her about a dozen times before she finally realized why it was a really bad idea...sheesh!

message 28: by Leslie (last edited Nov 27, 2010 05:15AM) (new)

Leslie (lesslie) Larry wrote: "Are they siblings, Bucky, Swear-to-god, and Onie-Mae?"

A cousin and a grandma. My mom only did one decent thing for us, to give us our names. We are Kimberly, Leslie, Marsha and Jonathan. Now, Kim and I are twins, so one would think we'd be named "Kim and Kelley" or "Lisa and Leslie", but there it is. (Oh, and Swear to God disappeared years ago. Rumour has it he's dead or in prison)

message 29: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesslie) I had a teacher once, Mrs Rowe. I swear to god, she named her son Skid. I'm serious as a heart attack. Skid Rowe!

message 30: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I had a great-aunt by marriage named "Armance".

Félix (habitseven) Skeeter lives on in spite of ....

message 34: by Kailey (new)

Kailey (lukutuokka) My husbands Dad and Uncle are names Tom and Jerry, and their mother still does not see why it is funny.

message 35: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I never thought Tom and Jerry were funny, either.

message 36: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Larry wrote: "I never thought Tom and Jerry were funny, either."

What about the one where Tom dresses up in a zoot suit and sings "Is You Is, Or Is You Ain't My Baby"?

message 37: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Well that wasn't funny. That was serious drama.

message 38: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments True. Very true.

message 39: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I still love Tom & Jerry!

message 40: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) My husband's middle name is Valentine, and mine is Maxine.

message 41: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesslie) Well I'm still laughing about "Skeeter". It's almost as funny as "Evinrude", my personal favorite hillbilly name.

message 42: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24781 comments Mod
Evinrude is a hillbilly name? It sounds so aristocratic. Although, don't they make boat engines? Are hillbillies naming their kids after an engine brand? Is this the white equivalent of black people naming their kid Louis Vuitton?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments My great uncles were named Ainsley and Ewart, both of which are excellent names for teddy bears. I also have an Great Auntie Wig, I do NOT know why.

message 44: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesslie) Barb wrote: "Apparently, my fathers middle name was Fountain.
???"

Hey, I like that. Never heard it before, but it's kinda cool.

message 45: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesslie) There was once this really wealthy family here who owned nearly everything and the family name was Hogg. I swear to God, they named their girls Ima and Ura. True Story. Houston history folks. Google them.

message 46: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24781 comments Mod
Oh yeah I've heard of the Hoggs.

message 48: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Sure. And the dad's name was Boss.

message 49: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesslie) Phil wrote: "Sure. And the dad's name was Boss."

LOL! Well, I'll be damned! You know, every child growing up in Houston hears stories about those poor Hogg girls and yet there never was a Ura. I do feel bad for Ima, though.

message 50: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Their little brother was named Bathroom.
