What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read this book just a few years ago, so it's not that old.

I cannot remember very much, so forgive the lack of details.

i remember that a boy was born very ugly and disfigured. i can't remember if the witch was his actual mother, or if she just raised him. i think he wore a mask most of the time, maybe a wolf mask?

they lived in the woods, and she had some weird companions, like animals or enchanted animals. there was one part where the boy was performing at a carnival or fair also.

again, i'm sorry for the lack of details. i was reminded of it today...i thought it was called something like "Son of a witch" but that's a G. Maguire book, and not the one i'm thinking of.
