Just reading an article in the NYTimes today about a UFO watchtower in Hooper, CO. Apparently there have been reported sightings of UFOs there since 1600. Not too surprising that they go back so far--once Copernicus and his followers established that the earth was just another planet going around the sun and not the ...center of the universe, it seemed to most people that there must be intelligent life on other planets otherwise it would have been a waste for God to create planets empty of life. This assumption was first called into question in the 19th century, resulting in a scathing debate which made it into the pages of Trollope's BARCHESTER TOWERS: "Are you a Whewellite, or a Brewsterite, or a t'othermite, Mrs. Bold?".
