I read this one about a month or so back and absolutely adored it. I can't wait to see what other people think of it.

It's one of the few books to have me cry too. D= Scott Lynch Is a jerk! :manmad:

Lildreamelf | 81 comments He totally is. I mean, making you cry! That guy deserves a punch in the nose. His book is wicked awesome though. I'm just in to where Locke is being told by Capa Barsavi that Locke has permission to court his daughter. For some reason, Capa Barsavi thinks Locke is cautious, when the truth is, Locke is anything but cautious. I can't wait to find out where things are going to go from here. I'm almost wondering if Narzca is playing her own game. The Gray King is upsetting the status quo. But Locke is already messing with the status quo. I am logging off to see what is happening next. EXCITEMENT!

Lildreamelf | 81 comments i stayed up until 1 am last night to finish the book. i had to know. who was the Gray King? what was his game? then there's "the Spider." the Spider is in charge of a secret police force in Camorr. No one knows who they are. THey are more myth than reality. Few have even seen them. They are more a whisper of reality. The same with the Thorn of Camorr. No one knows who that is either. The Thorn is a whispered rumor of a theif. No one is even sure if he exists, except those few who have been his vicitms.

There was a ton of intrigue and suspense in this story. Everyone had their own angle. i wonder who the Eldren were and if we are going to find out more about them in future novels. We hear about the Throne of Therin. That's something I want to hear more about as well. Karthain. That's the city of the bondmagi. What about Emberlain and the House of bel Auster? I do wonder if we are going to hear more about these places and people.

The House of Bel Auster is the location for the short story that acts as a prequel to the first book. It tells the story of how Locke and company got the bottle of the wine for this whole plan.

I do hope we'll see more about the Bloodmagi, I'm positive we will with how they left that previous one. The whole world really is fascinating in this series... it's just, I don't know, very alive.

How'd you take the deaths of the crew members?

message 6: by Lildreamelf (new)

Lildreamelf | 81 comments oh my god. it blew my effin' mind! how could they kill calo and galdo? AND BUG! i mean, how old was bug? like ... 15 years old? and was i the only one who is curious about what happened to locke while he was at the farm? and what about Sabetha? why did she leave? what was her specialty? we heard almost NOTHING of Sabetha except that locke was in love with her and she took off.

so many unanswered questions.

The twins were so awesome and witty, I'll miss them terribly. And Bug, Bug was so innocent (as innocent as a thief can be), loyal, and devoted. I was pretty devastated to see them killed in this first book. I feel like they were taken away before we could really get to see enough of them. I felt they were well made characters, but I wanted them to be around longer. :(

So many mysteries for other books to explore. :P

Lildreamelf | 81 comments OMG yes! Glodson is still reading it. Then again, I had it during the vacation and its tough to read when you are watching a little one. He's taking a lot of credit hours this next semester, but they aren't really difficult classes, so hopefully he'll be around more.

has the next book come out yet? i guess i could look into it myself, but i thought you might know and i'm lazy.

Ah, class and children are quite the time consumers. >_<

Next book is Phillip K Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep! Yay!

Andra | 75 comments OH MY GAWD. I'm glad I read this book, even if I read it two months late. I just want to ask, WHAT"S HIS NAME?!

[dies of not knowing]

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! Kind of figured you did since you read it in what, a day or two? :D

I really want to know what his name is as well. I'm hoping one of the later books will tell us. Though it may very well be one of those mysteries you never find out. The scene with him and the... I forget what they are called, so I'll call him a mage... was incredibly awesome. I was all "no, no, no, this can't be happening" and then Locke busts out with the badassery by telling the guy that's not his name. So awesome.

Andra | 75 comments I WAS SO IMPRESSED BY THAT SCENE. Also I was very impressed by Locke's use of language when talking with the nobles at the end and tricking them into sinking the boat. That was the best.

Will he be coming out with a sequel? It kind of felt right to just end it there, but at the same time I always want more of a great story line. IT seems worth while for a sequel.

Locke really does have a way with words. Gah, I love him. I loved that he got them to dig through the barge with all the refuse on it. XD He really stuck it to him there.

How'd you take the deaths of Calo, Galo, and Bug?

There is a sequel! Red Seas Under Red Skies is the next book. I haven't read it myself, but I've been wanting to. I was trying to spread the books out, but it looks like the author has had personal problems so only the first two are out. =\

message 14: by Andra (new)

Andra | 75 comments well then I shall read the sequel.

I figured more bad shit would happen to him, but I felt really bad when that happened. What irked me the whole time was a) not knowing what he did at the farm where Chains sent him, b) whatever happened to chains c)how did bug come about, that's about all I can think of for now.

I'm actually happy Lynch left some stuff a mystery. I think we'll learn that stuff when it's appropriate - when it has an effect on what's going on. I like it that way too because it doesn't seem like info dumping...

Though I'd imagine Chains passed away. He was an old guy when Locke met him and Locke has aged a bit since then. I think they mentioned that at some point... but I could be wrong, it's been a bit since I read it.

I need to read the sequel as well. Hmm. Are you planning on reading it soon or do you have other stuff you'll read first? Whenever you do, let me know and I'll read it at the same time.

There's also a short story that acts sort of like a prequel and tells the story of how Locke got that bottle of whine. The Bastards and the Knives Apparently it's two stories and actually explains how the gang came together. So maybe Bug's story is in there! And now looking around on different sites, I'm not sure that was released. =\

Andra | 75 comments See if I liked mysteries, I would have quit reading a long time ago. I love reading, only to figure out everything. It's probably why I'm an English major. It's unfortunate though that I can't interview every damn writer out there and pick their brains to know. I love knowing and not wondering, I think I'm in the wrong business of being human. heh.

Anyway I do know that Chains died, but I'm sure it wasn't just an ordinary death, it doesn't seem like it at all.

I'm planning to read the sequel as soon as I can buy it, probably this weekend. I'll let you know though.

Ah, I like figuring things out, but in time... I don't like massive info dumps. It would be nice to pick the brains of some authors. I feel like I need to do that with Brandon Sanderson after finishing this last book.

Considering his profession... it probably wasn't. >.<

Hopefully I can finish up this other book I started and will be able to read it along with you. If not, it'll be just a day or so later.
