Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thank you, Ala. That's one of my favorite books.

message 103: by [deleted user] (new)

I had just finished reading the book(I loved it as well) and went to write my own review when I saw that one. Needless to say, I wrote something short and just linked to his :P

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 77 comments i've mentioned my favorite review, but there are also a few reviewers who make me feel really enthusiastic whenever i get an update....can a person get a crush on a review? if so, i have many crushes.

one reviewer is a gent from the philippines who manages to be passionate and often bitter & cutting without resorting to easy snark; another who puts both her personal passions and her considerable knowledge in service of her reviews in a way that is almost intense to read; two others are ones who only review horror/scifi/fantasy, and whose incredibly informative & motivated reviews are ones i'd pay to read:

i just really enjoy their points of view and the way they communicate their interests and ideas. the love they have for reading is palpable and my life is made richer by reading their reviews. awww, how sweet.

i'm no friend to constant snark or overly self-conscious attempts to be creative...but as i've mentioned before, i've come to look forward to the often-snarky reviews of this group's creator. and now those of my new buddy mariel as well. they get lots of points for making me laugh, without overdoing it and by still keeping a very real voice that has both substance and style. there's snark there in both places, on a regular basis, but i've been finding their voices to be really enjoyable, very personable, its almost like we're talking about books over some beers. well in michael's case, its almost like i've gained access to his private dream journal at times. sometimes i have to look away, its too private!

Indeed. Thanks for mentioning my reviews. I am flattered. :-)

message 107: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 17 comments I really, really wish that GoodReads had an easy way for us to save favorite reviews by other users. I follow a lot of people and have a lot of friends here, so I read a lot of reviews. If the review the least bit informative or thoughtful, I will vote for it. It would take me a month to go through the reviews I've voted for to find the ones that I liked best. There have been some that I would definitely place on my top-ten if I could have one.

message 108: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) | 231 comments you could mention it in the goodreads feedback group, Sandi. generally (in all matters except the bumblebee mascot poll), the gr team is pretty responsive--

message 109: by Paul (new)

Paul Bryant Hang on - perhaps people do not know that all the reviews you have voted for are stored on your profile....... you just need to know where to look! is this what you mean?

message 110: by Whitaker (last edited Dec 07, 2010 07:10AM) (new)

Whitaker (lechatquilit) Ok, I just have to say, Michael, that your non-review is superb. And since it's impossible to vote for it, I'll just highlight it here. Is that even legal, btw, impersonating dead and living authors like that?

Books Ring Mah Bell perhaps people do not know that all the reviews you have voted for are stored on your profile....... you just need to know where to look! is this what you mean?

true?

How? Where!??!?!

message 112: by David (last edited Dec 07, 2010 07:31AM) (new)

David (nullnvoid) They are stored, BUT how many reviews have you voted for since you joined? (Especially you, Bells, ya vote slut.) That's a lot of reviews to look through. It'd be better to have a function where you tag specific reviews you might want to refer to again.

(To view the list of reviews you liked, go to update feed screen. On the right hand side under 'my profile' click 'comments.' In the upper right corner, click 'items XXXXX liked.')

Books Ring Mah Bell Thank you, David!
:)

I am NOT a vote slut!!!

okay, so over 700 things I have "liked". This will require a beer and some reading later so I can post the good ones here.

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio (joshuanomenmutatio) | 77 comments Over 1,500 for me. David must really hate me. If only there were a "hate" button. DK would break it through overuse.

It's funny to me that there's this whole idea of "voting is stupid and overblown and taken too seriously" by some of the same people who don't vote a lot specifically because they think voting "too much" devalues the vote. There's a direct contradiction there.

Whitaker, this is brilliant! You can have a like for flagging it.

Crap, I was hoping I could finish my non-review before it was discovered by anyone but Kelly. I guess I should be faster about doing these things...Glad you liked it!

Some reviews I've really liked:

Shoshana's of Forest's of Hands and Teeth:

jo's of Fledgling:

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I linked Jennifer aka EM's review of the Alchemist elsewhere, but it bears repeating:

Elizabeth's of Dalloway:

Meredith's of Half the Sky:

Also, awww, thanks. No need for scare quotes though - Ceridwen is my real name. :)

message 121: by Eh?Eh! (new)

Eh?Eh! | 48 comments I do love the angry rants against hated books and the funny ones, but when a loving review is done right, it's beautiful. There are so many reviews like this that I lovelovelove, by many different gr users. Ceridwen (again) does many of these. I just re-read the most recent one by Caris and it's haunting.

NO!!!! I've voted for a lot of reviews, I'd only call a few my favorites. It would take days to sift through those reviews to find my favorites. I'd like to see favorite reviews show up just like favorite quotes or favorite authors.

Jessica wrote: "you could mention it in the goodreads feedback group, Sandi. generally (in all matters except the bumblebee mascot poll), the gr team is pretty responsive--"

I've brought it up in the past. So far, nada.

message 123: by Paul (new)

Paul Bryant If anyone is particularly interested, I put together a second batch of personal favorites , which I call "part 2" :

Jessica’s cool damning review of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, so good I blatantly stole the idea fro my own review and didn’t credit her

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Anne’s personal-professional love letter to Miranda July :

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Jessica’s almost convincing review of Swann’s Way (I still don’t think I’m grown up enough to read that)

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Charissa falls all the way down the rabbit hole of kinky wrongness that is The Three Incestuous Sisters :

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Sarah’s 600 plus votegrabbing demolition of The Lovely Bones – ferocious olives, anyone?

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Tucker’s frankly fruitcake review of The Celestine Prophecy:

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Jeff’s highly useful summary of The Cold Six Thousand

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Kelly’s review of The Heart of the Matter develops into a wonderful rant

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Martine’s fab review of Madame Bovary which sparked off an even fabber conversation in the comments

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Lucas had a go at Tracy Emin’s Strangeland and made me chortle in an unseemly fashion

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 124: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) I've read so many great reviews on here, so it's difficult to choose. But off the top of my head, I'd have to say my friend Jim's review of A Pirate's Love. "So glad to be raping you again." Priceless.

message 125: by Kat Kennedy (new)

Kat Kennedy (katkennedy) | 45 comments "So glad to be raping you again." ?

That's the perfect ending to my next review! Thanks, LL!

message 126: by Nick (new)

Nick Black (dankamongmen) | 21 comments brian's twilight review and everything that Eric guy posts about american history books will have statues all over berlin in fifty years. conrad's also a regular source of brilliance, especially whenever he can talk about college football or ol' fyodor.

every review of that ghastly "eating animals" suckfest is the worst thing on goodreads, save brian's lies and tricks enticing one to get all excited about blood's a rover. wtf ellroy, that was about as exciting as a transoceanic voyage in a rowboat.

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 14 comments Oh boy, I have a lot of favorite reviews from other reviewers, but my favorites would have to be:

Lisa Vegan's review on Simon's Book:

Lady Jayne's review on Unlawful Contact:

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Miriam's review on Wifey:
