Once Dead, Twice Shy (Madison Avery, #1) by Kim Harrison
This is the place to gather to talk about the December group read Once Dead, Twice Shy.

How are you finding it? What do you like (or not)so far? Is the heroine kick ass? Got a great Alpha male? (sample Q's to get you thinking! I've not read this so they may not all be relevant!)

If you've already read the book feel free to jump in too!!

Please be respectful of spoilers - do a warning if you are posting one!

Krysta (krystafig) | 4089 comments I've been needing an excuse to get this book started. Now that it's a monthly read, I'll have to read it! I've owned it for a while now and haven't had the chance to open it up.
I'm excited!

Renee Rearden (reneerearden) | 43 comments Jen,

I've already finished this book...and the next. (They're listed in my books section.) I really like it. My 14 yr old read it after I finished and she's chomping at the bit for the next book!

Claire Farrell (clairefarrell) I'm not loving it. Maybe it'll pick up but right now I'm bored and forcing myself to read on. :/ I'll keep reading though.

At first I thought I was reading a sequel, apparently there's a short story prequel that I didn't read. That might explain why I'm not enamoured yet. :)

Carie T | 5 comments I thought this was a fun quick read and am looking forward to reading the next one.

A Voracious Reader (a.k.a. Carol) (avidreader68) This was a fast, fun, easy read with a great concept. My only complaint is that Madison was a complete twit. Here she is in a new and confusing situation of which she is completely ignorant and she's not trying to get as much information as possible? Knowledge is power, most especially when you're dumped into an unfamiliar situation and need to find your feet fast.

I realize she's 17, but when I was 17 I had a premature infant, a husband, full-time job and was finishing high school. She should have pulled up her big girl panties and got to work instead of blindly letting others guide her and whine about how she wanted her life back.

The ending gives me hope for the next book. I look forward to watching Madison grow and mature, figuratively speaking.

Diane | 82 comments This was my first Kim Harrison book and I was not impressed. It was a quick and easy read though. May recommend it to my teens.

Sandra It sounds like this one's getting mixed reviews, so I'll prob pass for now... but I just had to acknowledge this awesome statement!

Hah, that's great Carol. And I also hate when characters whine too much and don't actually do anything about it, so thanks for the heads up.

LOL Thanks, Sandra. Sweet Mother, I hate whiners. I realize sometimes a character needs to whine a bit in order for us to see growth down the road, but I so want to smack them upside the head!

Krysta (krystafig) | 4089 comments I actually liked this book.
I love Kim Harrison's "Hollows" series, so I was eager to read these books.
Madison's complaining didn't bother me really. I think she did what she could with the situation, considering how much information was being held from her.

It was a nice, quick read and easy to understand and visualize.
I'll be reading the second book for sure.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 43 comments I totally agree with Carol. Most of the book I figured I wouldn't be finishing the series, but the last bit really gave some answers and set up some interesting plot points, so now I'm stuck having to read the next one at some point.
