What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

i think it is a book....but there was like a side story about this man and little girl that were a part of a caravan and everyone died except them. they were found by mormons heading west. he didnt believe like they did but he followed their laws as he lived with them and raised the little girl as a daughter. when she grew up she fell in love with a man who wasnt a mormon and they had to come up with a way for her to sneak away to be with him.........................................that's all i can remember. It wasnt the whole book it was just a story in it.

It actually sounds like part of the Sherlock Holmes story "A Study in Scarlet."

I second Erin's thought. It is from A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and is the first Sherlock Holmes novel. I read it this year!
