Heidi | 1546 comments Wow Catie. That is a lot of books! I am boring I guess because I only have the one I am listening to right now The Ghosts of Ashbury High on my mp3.

message 2: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2421 comments As I said in another thread Fallen IMHO wasn't that great.I am on the waiting list to get Rooms & wom Wicked Appetite from macmillan audio but never recieved it.

On Mine right now I have:

The Forgotten Garden(Listening to now)

Sufficient Grace: A Novel which I am removing when I get home didn't realize this was christian fiction
Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye
The House of Mirth by, Edith Wharton

I usually only put a few on there at a time and remove them once I've listened to them so there isn't so much to wade through

message 3: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments Oh Susie I liked Abby Cooper in print. Wish I could hear it on audio.

message 4: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2421 comments Well this year I have read The Age of Innocence and The Custom of the Country and really loved them both so am kind of on an Edith Wharton kick!

message 5: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Susie:

I have The Age of Innocence on my player, read by Alyssa Bresnahan, one of my favorite narrators. I also have a group of Wharton stories on my Sony e-reader, read by Grace Conlin. We had to read Ethan Frome in high school, and hated it. I later listened to The Custom of the Country at a friend's urging; it was rather depressing I thought.

I tend to hoard as well so have the latest in the following series unread:

"Miss Julia" (more hijinks than mystery) by Ann B. Ross
"Lydia Smith/Bill Chin" mysteries by S. J. Rozan
"Maisie Dobbs" mysteries by Jacqueline Winspear
"Judge Knott" mysteries by Margaret Maron

Stand-alone fiction:

Nobody's Fool by Richard Russo
The Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors: A Novel by Michele Young-Stone
Ulysses by James Joyce

as well as several other non-fiction that wouldn't interest most here, and the dozen or so unread Audible books I haven't transferred to a player yet!

message 6: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments The Maisie Dobbs series went through three narrators in the first four books - as with many series, the first one has less "plot" as the author was busy setting up a long series.

I forgot to mention I have the latest Agatha Raisin on my player - I've read all the previous ones in print, so this'll be a new experience. And, a while ago, I downloaded the Victorian gothic horror story Uncle Silas from Librivox.

message 7: by Ralph (last edited Dec 17, 2010 06:50PM) (new)

Ralph McEwen Yeah for the Sony ereader. I have one also and I really like the e-paper better than back lit screens. I also am converting my books on tape to MP3 format.

message 8: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments Catie I love Jaclyn Moriarty, and you can't go wrong with any of her Ashbury High books :)

I have listened to the first three in the Maisie Dobbs series, and for me they have gotten better with each subsequent book. I wasn't especially impressed with the first, but liked it enough to give the second one a try, and was glad I did. The third had much more substance and character development.

Kara (sterlink) | 52 comments Currently finishing up The Hero of Ages, then have some that I am part way into, like The Name of the Wind (which I adore! I read the book years back, but the sequel will be coming out in March *fingers crossed* hopefully, and the audio is very good), and The Necromancer. Then I have Toothless (which is a free podcast!) and World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (abridged! yuck) waiting for me... but I'm a little scared and will need something else to listen to before bed... so maybe Guardians of Ga'hoole Boxed Set, Books 1 - 4, which is also hanging out on my mp3 player. That's about it, except for King of the Murgos, which I had almost forgotten about. =)

Hoping to get
Stormwardenwith my next audible credit.

Janice | 0 comments On my mp3 player I am listening to Angelology. It has been a little draggy for me, but I think that is partially my own fault as I only use the player while working out. I have missed quite a few days recently, what with work and Christmas scurry. I enjoyed the first part, so hope to get back into the story soon.

message 12: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 25 comments I don't have a huge amount but here's what's on mine waiting to be listened to:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I'm in the middle of listening to Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison and have A Fistful of Charms waiting to start to continue the series. I really enjoy Marguerite Gavin as narrator.

I may re-listen to Dreamfever by Karen Marie Moning since the last book in the series, Shadowfever, will be released 1/18/11 and I would like to refresh before I read it. I hope they have the audio version available to buy on 1/18 as well. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

message 13: by LauraT (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 8 comments I've got a very old and very small memory: only one book at a time; at the moment I'm listening Little women and good wives by Alcott, from librivox.org

Laurie (Kwiltreader) (lauriekwiltreader) | 15 comments What a great idea for a group. Just uploaded 6 books to MP3 player. Just finished Letter to my Daughter by Maya Angelou...read by herself, of course...and I highly recommend it. Now listening to Alex Cross's Trial--not sure who the reader is.

message 15: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments I recall listening to Maya Angelou's series of memoirs (I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and others) read by the late actress Lynne Thigpen, and really liking them quite a bit.

message 16: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments Hey Nikki how is Dreamfever on audio? I loved the narrator of the first three books, but noticed the Dreamfever has a different narrator. Have you listened Undead and Unemployed? It somewhat reminded me of the Fever series, but heavier on the humor side. p.s. Barons is yummy :)

message 17: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Catie --

I once e-mailed an author with a comment, and in her reply she mentioned she felt the narrator "got the voice of one character wrong" - I didn't get a chance to pursue that, but I thought the narration was terrific. Go figure!

message 18: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments Catie wrote: "Yeah, I guess there is a disconnect sometimes between what the author imagines and what the reader appreciates. Still, in the case of Dreamfever...I'm guessing that she wanted her IRISH character ..."

That is odd because I loved the original narrator for the Fever series. Huh. Go figure. I am guessing she won't be back to narrate the 5th book next month then. Boo!

message 19: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 243 comments I've got:

The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Giver by Lois Lowry
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
Talking to Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
and
The New Testament

I listen to a lot of YA... ;) (I love the Ashbury High books!)

message 20: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 25 comments Heidi & Catie

I liked the original narrator of the Fever series (Joyce Beam) for Mac's voice & the other females but I HATED her version of Barrons. He sounded like an old woman to me. Phil Gigante does a marvelous job with all of the men's voices on Dreamfever and I didn't mind Natalie Ross, the female narrator. I can see what you mean about Dani though. She did have a funky scottish accent thrown in there but it didn't bother me as much as the "old woman Barrons" did. I'm almost positive that Shadowfever will be Ross/Gigante again.

Catie - I have to admit, so far, I've read all of the books that I've gotten on audio. I liked The Hollows series which was why I decided to try the audio and I'm glad I did. I love them. I've read Outlander and listened to the sample of it and the narrator sounded really good so I can't wait to listen to it.

Heidi - I've read Undead and Unemployed but haven't tried the audio. I've read up through book 6 (I think) and I thought they went downhill after book 3. The first 3 were hilarious though.

Heidi | 1546 comments Nena I am too cheap for audible and my mp3 (sony ericsson phone) is not compatable with it. I wish it had prices a little closer to Netflix. I would recommend you get the free trial for a month (they usually offer something like that) and see what you think. I did that and it was super easy to cancel. p.s. make sure your device is compatable with it! Also, even though I am not paying for audible anymore I can still log in and re-download the 3 audiobooks I have in my account.

Does your library allow you to request books-on-CD that they don't own via Inter-Library Loan?

message 23: by Grumpus, Hearing aide (new)

Grumpus | 473 comments Only one on my Sansa M250 right now as I just cleaned it up because I just downloaded Fall of Giants which is about 31 hours. I think John Lee is a terrific narrator having listened to him read Follett's Pillars of the Earth and World Without End.

Wow! That is so sad :(

message 27: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 2 comments I've listened to:

Tess of the D'Urbervilles
People of the Book
Great Expectations
Persuasion
The Zookeeper's Wife
The End of the Affair
Madame Bovary

My favorite was Great Expectations. Listening is a great way to get in some of the classics I'd missed.
Second best was The End of the Affair.

Right now I'm listening to:

The Age of Innocence

I'm planning to listen to:

The Idiot
The Master and Margarita

Stormwarden is FANTASTIC!!Great story and David Thorpe is a great narrator!

John- you'll have to let us know how Uncle Silas is from Librivox I've been thinking about getting that one too!

Looks like I'm not the only one who has been reading Edith Wharton this year!

message 30: by John, Moderator (last edited Dec 20, 2010 11:28AM) (new)

John | 3917 comments Overdrive has a lot of Wharton available on mp3 format, which I can store on my Sony e-reader. I've loaded four of her stories: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10.... (I had already added her novella The Touchstone.)

I've also added The Glimpses of the Moon (Signet Classics to my Sansa Clip+ - which already had The Age of Innocence. I'll hold off on The House of Mirth (which I've started as both an audiobook and film, but never gotten far into either) until after tackling those first.

I listened to Wilkie Collins' lesser known works Armadale and No Name, read by Flo Gibson, but the Librivox recordings might be worth checking out - the stories are both fairly suspenseful.

Has anyone found an unabridged audio version of Woolf's The Waves?

message 32: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments Wow Brodie! That is a lot of books :)

message 33: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments I have a dozen or so yet-to-transferred, ripped-from-CD books in my hard drive, in addition to the lot on my players.

message 34: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments I almost always drag and drop - sync'ing is for DRM protected files pretty much.

I rip each CD as a single file, keeping them together in one folder.

That is what it looks like. I printed out the application today and my friend from another group uses it already.

I read it years ago. I even wrote an answer to an essay question on an exam about it, and I can't remember a thing about it now. When I saw it on Audibles, I decided I needed to reread it.

message 42: by Wendalyn (new)

Wendalyn Peterson | 6 comments LOL I am with Brodie I have 2 external drives that hold my audio books and even keep a book list so I don't rebuy them.
