I've got a fondness for Canadian Geese (no not that kind of fondness) > General, non-sequitur type statements re: local birds. e.g.: plastic alligators are not effective to scare away Canadian geese ... but may be effective in scaring away Canadians

We get tons of geese around here...sometimes I can hear entire gaggles (that's what a group of geese is called, right?) in the harbor, even though I'm about a half-mile away.
The poop is quite a spectacle. It is hard to avoid at times, and makes a disturbingly dry scrunch when you step on it.

But I'll restrain.
They are spectacular in flight. I really like when they come swooping in, in a large group, honking like crazy, with their wings working backwards to slow for the splashdown. It's so primordial, and cool.
We don't get Canadian geese. I have been wondering what birds we do have in common. Do you have magpies?
My friend Melissa got a cockatiel in jr. high around the same time as my family did. (mine was mitiku I don't know hers' name)
I just found out that her bird is still alive.
I just found out that her bird is still alive.

We also have a lot of hawks, various small game birds, roadrunners and the occasional eagle. Oh, I almost forgot the doves and bats - a lot of each.

In New York, we are, of course, overrun with pigeons and sparrows, but we also get a wide variety of other birds. Bluejays, woodpeckers, and owls are pretty common.
There was a pair of hawks nesting in Riverside Park this summer. Enormous birds.

Was it this one?

They could be cactus wrens Phil.

Gilded Flicker at home:

That is just Phil's influence on you Sally. If Jonathan had posted the picture you would have been thinking of birds.

It's called, "A Cactus in My Y-Fronts"
My name is Two Gun Pierre
I wear rose buds in my hair
And a chic-chic pink bandanna round my neck
I came down from Tennessee
With a cowboy on my knee
And a pair of leather chaps around my legs ... hold on boys!
I was down in Cripple Creek
I was dying for a leak
So I dropped my pants behind a cactus there
When I fastened up my belt
I can't tell ya how I felt
But I knew the meaning of a prickly pear ... ouch!!
Oh I've got a cactus in my y-fronts and a vulture round my head
I've just been kissed by a Tennessee miss and I wish that I were dead
I've a jockstrap made of leather and pants of PVC (ee - ee - ee - ee - ee - ee)
The cactus in my y-fronts make a loser out of me!
In Californ - i - a
Where the rustlers are so gay
I bought a gentle gee-gee name of Jacques
But he livened up a lot
When he felt my prickly spot
And that buckin' bronco broke my buckin' back!
So I walked up to Nevada
Where the gals try so much harder
And I met a beefy belle called Caroline
But when she felt my prickles
She cried "Oh Lord, that tickles!"
And now she's run off with a porcupine
Oh I've got a cactus in my y-fronts and a vulture round my head
I've just been kissed by a Tennessee miss and I wish that I were dead
Do you like my high heeled horseshoes, I got them from Paree (ee - ee - ee - ee - ee - ee)
The cactus in my y-fronts make a loser out of me!
Alright horsey, hoof me a chorus
[tapping and neighing sounds]
Oh what a great hoof!
It's the yodelling coyote
[howling sounds]
Oh I've got a cactus in my y-fronts and a vulture round my head
I've just been kissed by a Tennessee miss and I wish that I were dead
I've got sequins on my saddle and I smell like a jasmine tree (ee - ee - ee - ee - ee - ee)
The cactus in my y-fronts make a loser out of me!
Would an Eastern Spine Bill distract you Jim. We have these in my garden. They are one of my favourite birds.

I was hoping to see a Secretary Bird but I didn't.

I've never bird-watched before, but it was fun.

Do you have the same birds we do, but in the summertime?
They're so cute. They hang about in great big groups, squacking and fluffering their feathers. I like their webbed feet and cautious street crossing groups.
