Notary Tim (timgatewood) | 8 comments google ebooks referred me to the Adobe Digital Reader website (as part of the instructions on how to get the google ebooks into the Nook). And the Adobe Digital Reader website has a page of free ebooks here: http://www.adobe.com/products/digital...

Debbi | 6 comments Does anyone know anything about sites like rapidshare and torrent? I'm new to the ebook world, but these seem to be sign-up type sites where you can access newer material, apparently free? Thanks for any insight you can offer!

Sorry but we don't talk about illegal file sharing on here. If you are looking for older stuff online you can try project Gutenberg.

Debbi | 6 comments I had no idea it was illegal; didn't even know that was possible. As I said, I'm brand new to the ebook world, and this only came up when I was searching for Harry Potter books (to buy, if not available free), and saw it was the only place that had it. I had no idea ebooks even existed illegally. How do you know you're getting legal copies? I need a primer, I guess! :-)

Any large chain bookstore on the net will have some free books. Check previous postings here for links to legal sites like Project Gutenberg. Also check your local library since some library systems are now also doing short term access to ebooks.

Notary Tim (timgatewood) | 8 comments Debbi, the whole point of this list is to identify sites where you can get legal copies of ebooks. Read through the postings here; make notes of the sites mentioned; visit them and add them to your bookmarks or favorites so you can revisit them easily; go to each as often as you are able to see what new goodies they have available. Eventually, if the author/publisher allows it, there will be a cheap or free version of MOST works. (Some authors or publishers will never allow freebies; some only allow reduced prices if you buy from one of the big online stores such as Amazon (amazon.com) or Barnes & Noble (bn.com). )

I hope that helps you.

I think it's ok to ask, if you make it clear that's what you are doing.

Any site that looks unprofessional, or that has the word "torrent" anywhere, or that has lots of recent popular books for free -- probably illegal.

David (boototter) | 1 comments Better make that: that ONLY has torrent as a download method. For very legal sites too, torrents are an efficient way of avoiding servers getting overcharged, and thus they often prefer you using them over other types of download they offer. It will help keep costs down, and thus easier to maintain the server. But be aware indeed, only torrents for download AND then loads of recent books is a certain illegal. And the trojan or virus hidden between all those nice things is sometimes hard to recognise..
