Alisa (mstaz) Oh look what arrived in the mail! I hope to start reading this by the first of the year. The author will be in town for a speaking engagement around the middle of January and I hope to read this or be well into it by then.

The New Jim Crow Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander by Michelle Alexander

Bryan Craig Nice, this is also on my TBR pile :-)

message 403: by Gentian (new)

Gentian | 23 comments I have just picked up Andrew Cooks's the True Story of Reilly Ace of Spies (apologies I am accessing this on a telephone app and can not see how to add the book link).

Has anyone read it or gave any thoughts on the book? I have been rewatching the excellent tv series and wanted to find out a little more about this fascinating man.

I wanted to read the Lockhart book but it is not available on kindle.

Gentian, when you are online please go back and add the book cover and author links for both books. Thanks.

Alisa (mstaz) At least I purchase books that are already on my to-read list . . . So that means I don't have a book buying problem, right?

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain by Paula McLain Paula McLain

message 407: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) The simple answer is "no", Alisa. Why?......because your TBR list, just like mine, is infinite and almost every book mentioned in the HBC gets added to it. But I will never see it as a problem.....obsession maybe, problem, never. :0)

message 408: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) I knew someone would validate my rationalization! Thank you Jill!

message 409: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Well said, Jill, cheers to our massive TBR lists.

message 410: by Tomerobber (new)

Tomerobber | 334 comments The books in my TBR stash ARE books I own . . . eBooks, audiobooks, hardbacks, paperback . . . whatever format they come in!! Unfortunately every time I get on GR . . . I find more references to other books that look interesting as well . . . for everyone I read from my list . . . I end up adding 2 or 3 more . . . Boredom is NEVER a problem at my place ;-)

message 411: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Went on a little internet shopping spree yesterday, so these are all making their way to my mailbox over the next couple of days. When shipping is free, why buy just one?

I see these are your Middle Eastern picks. Make sure to add them to the safari general thread because these are great choices.

Alisa (mstaz) Two of them are, and I believe I already added those to the general thread but will check and be sure to do so. Thanks.

Alisa (mstaz) Happy birthday to me! Decided I had to have this, although I don't know when I will start reading it. This has been getting a lot of positive mention locally in the Seattle area, which it would of course because of the presence of the University of Washington.

Hi Chrissie,
I have all three of books (Kindle editions) . . . I finished the first and I think I'm about half way through the second . . . (It's been awhile) . . . I've been distracted by all the book discussions I've been involved with . . . so I haven't gotten back to it.

Great series!

Tomerobber, good to know. Has this author written other good books you can recommend to me?

message 425: by Bryan (last edited Jun 14, 2013 12:30PM) (new)

Bryan Craig The trilogy seems to be his best, could try his one on Beethoven:

Beethoven The Universal Composer by Edmund Morris The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris Colonel Roosevelt by Edmund Morris by Edmund Morris Edmund Morris

message 426: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Found this one at the grocery store of all places:

message 427: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Don't you love great discoveries in unexpected places? It's a gift!

message 428: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig So true, 7 bucks.

message 429: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Thanks, Bryan. I am really liking the first book on Theodore.

Here are two that you might consider Chrissie. (Ooops, I think Bryan already mentioned the Beethoven book)

Hi Chrissie . . . I haven't tried any of his other books . . . I see Bryan and Jill offered some suggestions . . . this place will get you hooked . . . I've doubled my TBR stack since joining . . . ;-)

message 433: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) My TBR list is totally out of control. I will have to live to be at least age 125 to read them all!

message 434: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) With modern science you might just make it Jill!

message 435: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Since reading is my only vice (well, not really), maybe I will!!

message 436: by 'Aussie Rick' (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Oooh, you might have to expand on what your other vices are :)

message 437: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Not a chance!!!!!!

message 438: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) I think this totally depends on your definition of vices.

message 439: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) This is true, Alisa and my definition will have to remain my secret!!! :>)

message 440: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I don't try and control my TBR list. I just see it as a place from which I choose books to buy. There is not a chance I can read everything there. Thanks all of you for the suggestions.

message 441: by Krystal (last edited Jun 21, 2013 08:43PM) (new)

Krystal (queenravenclaw) Well I've added a few. I don't know if I should even add the one I recieved what was it for christmas? or was it my bday last year shock! I can't remember no it ws christmas woo ok so Im bad with reviews and such and just now going to tell you lovely lot what 4 books have been added to my shelves.

The Kingmaker's Daughter (The Cousins' War #4) by Philippa Gregory by Philippa Gregory Philippa Gregory (my fave author you know)

The Boleyn Inheritance (The Tudor Court, #3) by Philippa Gregory by Philippa Gregory Philippa Gregory

Annette Vallon A Novel of the French Revolution by James Tipton by James Tipton

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine, #1) by Ransom Riggs by Ransom Riggs Ransom Riggs

so those are all the books from the year so far. The Boleyn Inheirtance was kind of a bargain book at about $10 with taxes. Annette Vallon was $6.25, and Miss.P was only $8. So it's really cool that i find all these books. Not all from the same store. All different stores.the first one on the list like i said was a present.

message 442: by Tomerobber (new)

Tomerobber | 334 comments My problem was that I joined GR . . . then I joined the HBC group . . . it's all their fault . . . I've doubled my TBR stash (Up to 450+ titles) and even if I manage to read 75-100 books each year . . . it's going to take me 4-5 years to get through the ones I already own . . .
They say you can't take it with you . . . but I just might have to ;-)

message 443: by Bryan (new)

message 444: by Chrissie (last edited Jul 02, 2013 07:32AM) (new)

Chrissie Bryan, the two you bought look excellent. Have you read Candice Millard earlier? I really enjoyed "The River of Doubt"! I would also be interested in the library book, but a lot about Pinchot was in the trilogy I just read about Theodore Roosevelt.

Theodore Roosevelt Trilogy by Edmund Morris by Edmund Morris Edmund Morris

message 445: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Chrissie, I loved River of Doubt. Fascinating. I'm working on the first of Morris' books based on your recent praise. I might have to put it aside for a moment, but I want to finish it. It is great.

Rebecca (iowareader) | 129 comments Even though the "to be read" collection on my Kindle has over 20 books in it, I am still a sucker for price drop notifications for my much longer "wish list". This morning I added this classic work about the start of WW I.

message 450: by Francie (new)

Francie Grice Not so recently acquired , but a few years ago, my wonderfully thoughtful brother gave me a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica he found at an estate sale. It is a 1771 edition and is only three volumes. It's a great addition to my book collection and wonderful to read and look through.
