as most of you already know my trusty nikon, my companion for the last seven years, died a few months ago. being without a camera made me sad so i bought a new one yesterday. here are some pictures:








i've been skating a lot the past few days. i did a few laps on a canal on saturday, 25 km on monday, 15 km yesterday, and 40 km today.

i was participating in a toertocht, an event organized by the national skating association and the local skating club where you can skate certain distances on a canal or a lake. you pay a small fee to participate and receive a medal afterwards, sometimes with the distance you skated engraved on it. when it's on a lake there's usually a lap marked out around the lake. depending on the length you skate as many laps as you want. the lake i skated on today was 10 km, i was on another lake monday and tuesday that was 5 km. along the lap there are checkpoints where you get a stamp to prove you skated the entire lap. it's always a lot of fun and hundreds of people (sometimes thousands) participate, from the real fanatics (to be recognized by their tights) to amateurs like me, and even children. anyone can participate. along the route there are places where you can get snert (thick pea soup with sausages), kwast (lemon lemonade made with boiling water), hot chocolate, glühwein etc. it is usually not a competitive event, everyone receives a commemorative medal.

I like that snert and kwast get definitions (and by the way, lemonade with boiling water sounds really good)...but remind me what gluhwein is? I think you've told us and I've forgotten.

glühwein is red or white wine, with spices (cinnamon, cloves, anis, citrus) and sometimes sweetened with sugar or honey. it is served warm.

So like mulled wine, I guess.
