Hello to all the newbies.

KatLynne | 7 comments Hi Everyone - I'm KatLynne. While I have read many, many classics, it has been awhile. I need to re-read many of them. Being a romantic at heart, Jane Eyre is one of my favorites. I love Dickens and Great Expectations is a favorite. I have read Homer's Iliad, but it has been so long that I need to re-read. I loved Little Women. I always considered Christy by Catherine Marshall as a modern classic:) I loved it! I have read Wuthering Heights, but again it has been awhile. I actually have a love/hate relationship with that book:) At the urging of my daughter, I am presently reading book:Frankenstein|7131284]. I am so very excited to be a part of this group.

Welcome, KatLynne. I love Jane Eyre and Little Women!!!

message 55: by Laraine (new)

Laraine (lala26) | 19 comments Hi, new to the group! I found that this might be a good way for me to start reading classics as I've always leaned towards contemporary ever since I was little. Hopefully this will motivate me, haha... Looking forward to your book-thoughts!

Welcome aboard, Laraine.

Now is a good time to get into classics, since so many are available for free as ebooks and online reads.

message 58: by Carol (new)

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) Hi, I'm Carol from Bristol, Connecticut. I like reading a variety of literature. I have read some classics (Les Miserables and Jane Eyre are my favorites so far.) I look forward to reading and discussing classics with the group.

message 59: by Jena (last edited Mar 26, 2011 04:47PM) (new)

Jena (astudyinfic) Hi! I'm Jen from the desert about 150 miles east of Seattle. The Classics are my favorite, but I feel like I have read so few of them. Apparently I missed all the literature classes where students were actually required to read these. I am slowly getting "caught up" so to speak. My favorites right now are Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Pride and Prejudice.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome Carol and Jen! Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorites. I think it's fantastic.

message 61: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Hi I'm Sarah and I'm new to reading classics. I've seen a lot of film and TV adaptations of them which i have enjoyed but never got round to reading them. I am awaiting the arrival of Wuthering Heights throught the post as I type! My first one. I'm also interested in reading Jane Eyre. I'd also like to read some of Jane Austens books as I went to the Jane Uasten Museum in Bath last year and it inspired me.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Hi Sarah. Welcome! Jane Eyre is one of the best classics I've read. It's a good starting point.

message 63: by Nance (new)

Nance (nabpurple12) | 23 comments Hi, I'm Nance from East Fishkill, NY - USA, and I've always been trying to read the classics, but when thinking of all that old-English wording and long-winded vocabulary, I got so turned off by them...fortunately, at the end of last year, a few friends told me that The Count of Monte Cristo was so great,so I had to just give it a shot, and to my surprise, I actually liked it. So, I vowed that this year, I would read one a month. With that being said, I just happened to stumble onto your group for beginners, and here I am! I'm almost done with Jane Eyre, and I haven't been able to put the book down. Looking forward to read Pride and Prejudice for the next group read:)

message 67: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (kristinekae) Hello all! I can't believe I'm joining another group, but your bookshelf looks so wonderful AND I happen to be starting Emma right now, about 40 pages in.

I recognize a couple of you :::::waving:::::: I'm Kristine, I live in Utah and I am taking baby steps into the classics. I read Pride and Prejudice for the first time this year. I guess I have read a few others that would be considered classics but a favorite, hard to say.

message 68: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberhmlarson) | 9 comments Hi Everyone! I'm Amber, 24 from San Francisco, CA. I have not read any classics at all but would love to get into them. I never felt interested but I know that once I dive in, I will enjoy them!

message 73: by Jayne (new)

Jayne | 2 comments Hi - I'm Jayne, and was turned away from the classics due to a surfeit of Thomas Hardy many years ago at school, however have decided this year to try again and so far have enjoyed War of the Worlds, Tale of Two Cities, The Canterville Ghost and The Count of Monte Cristo. Have plans for Dracula and Frankenstein next.

message 74: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Jayne, Frankenstein is a really great book, and I am with you for reading Dracula.

message 75: by Robert (new)

Robert Clear (robertclear) | 7 comments Hi everyone, my name's Robert and I'm from London. I'm currently in the final year of a PhD in classics. I study Ancient Greek literature, so I suppose it's a different kind of classics, but there's a bit of overlap!

My favourite book that falls under both classics (as in books) and classics (as in Greek) is The Iliad.

message 76: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn (kaitlynmallory) Hello! My name is Kaitlyn and I live in Florida, USA. I love reading but sadly, the only part of the year I am able to read for pleasure (all thanks to college) is in the 4 short months of summer (which is now!). I'm very new to classic literature and I haven't even really dipped my foot into it. I had started "Pride and Prejudice" last December, but because of school, I had to stop. But from what I read, that will be my favorite book ever. I'm so glad we're reading it for May!

message 77: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Welcome! Robert and Kaitlyn I hope you will both have positive contributions to the group.

message 78: by Alicia (last edited May 06, 2011 08:44PM) (new)

Alicia (aliciaftw) Hello. =) My name is Alicia, 20, and I'm from Missouri. My favorite classics are Wuthering Heights, Scaramouche, and Lolita. I haven't read too many classics, to be honest. It's not that I don't enjoy them, but I tend to have a lack of focus, and we all know classics usually have a lot of build up. (I figure my horrible focus is related to all the video games I play. I depend on books to get my attention from the get-go.) I'm hoping to build up my focus and find some new classics to love.

message 79: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Alicia, I hope that you will feel more comfortable reading classics with us!

message 80: by [deleted user] (last edited May 07, 2011 12:44PM) (new)

Hi

I am a homeschool mom from Alaska and an avid reader. This next year my # 2 daughter will be in 9th grade and will start working on some of the classics in literature. I am hoping for some good ideas on her first attempt at classic literature. The last thing I want is for her to attempt a really boring or off-putting classic and have her turned off by this genre. So, her and I will read or listen to them together.

We both have eReaders and iPods. When we travel in the truck we will listen to a book and other times we will read our eBooks.

We may even do fun things like read Pride and Prejudice and then read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

So any suggestions or pointers on good teen first classic reads are definitely welcome. If this is not the right club for this ... you all can point me in the right direction for that too!

Thanks

message 81: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Dorothy, I think this group could help you with suggestions. I am a teenager myself and first picked up Jane Eyre and loved it! Also Murder on the Orient Express is a gripping novel with language which isn't too challenging.

Great! Thanks for the tip I will suggest adding

Murder on the Orient Express to our list of to-reads for the classics.

message 83: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle No problem, it is an excellent book, and I think there is also a movie version (which my dad tells me is good but I haven't watched).

Welcome to the new members. I apologize for my lack of presence. My online time has been curtailed, so I don't get to come on Goodreads as much. I look forward to chatting about classic with everyone.

message 92: by Verena (new)

Verena | 11 comments Hi there!

My name is Verena, originally from Germany, now living in WA. Two kids, two pets, one husband. The kids and I go to the library about once a week where we check out as many books as will fit into our special 'library bag'. I am always looking for new books to read - particularly when I am #342/350 on the wait list. I have many favorite books but I love classics and historical fiction (especially Hispanic). Don't care for romance novels ... at all. So no Nora Roberts or Nicholas sparks here ;-)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Hi Verena. Welcome to the group.
