Deb (lupatrian) Has anyone ever tackled the Groups? I just scrolled through all 109 pages. Many duplicates - there must be 30-or-better Harry Potter groups. Wouldn't it be great to suggest a merge and get them all together (and clean up the Groups list!)? Also many one-member, and/or no-activity ever/no-activity-in-over-a-year groups.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments I don't think we should combine groups. If I have a group of selected friends and we're all discussing Harry Potter, I don't want to all of a sudden find that I'm in a huge group with people I don't know.

As for deleting groups that appear to be obsolete, that's probably not a bad idea, as long as members get notices that there hasn't been any activity in a while and their group is about to be deleted.

I don't have much to do with groups, but that's my personal opinion! :-)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I pretty much agree with JG. For both instances discussed.

Bradley I have been looking at the groups.. a way to market my book, there are certainly a lot of them. Don't have much to suggest. Just a general thought really. Some of them are pretty high traffic. =)

Emily | 4 comments I have noticed some groups without any activity in over a year and only having one or two members...It seems to be that it would be a good idea to eliminate these so people looking for active groups didn't have to go though so many pages.

How does one eliminate a group??

message 6: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments The only members who can eliminate groups are their moderators. Goodreads staff can also eliminate them if it's appropriate.

I hope they don't start deleting inactive groups without warning! I mod a fairly inactive group, but it's there to help other members (all of whom know each other from elsewhere on the 'Net) find the rest of us when we talk them into signing up for GR.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I agree with Rivka. I should have said that in message #6. I don't see what the big deal is about having fairly inactive groups here. The problem I see with some inactive groups is when moderators are not active and group members suffer due to lack of folder organization, etc.

Andrea Kulman (andreakulman) | 8 comments I want to delete my group. I started it and honestly can't figure out how to get rid of it. Can you walk me through... please. :~D

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Andrea,

Go to the group's home page.

Click on the settings link. (edit: actually it says group settings)

Scroll to the bottom of that page and click on the delete this group link.

Edit: Andrea, When I answered I assumed you are the sole moderator and the group is inactive/perhaps has no members.

If there are any other moderators or active members, I'd actually ask or at least inform them if you are about to delete a group. If there are other active members perhaps one or more of them would take over moderator duties and would like to see the group continue. Just a thought.
