2011 Goodreads Challenge
Ok, maybe this will keep me on track.

I have an Access database at home for reading (three indeed: for challenges, electronic books and paper books) and I register them here at goodreads. I've signed, we'll see.
I've signed up for it too. I keep track of what I've read in a notebook but it's listed by date of what I've read so it's hard to look up anything in particular. I also (once I joined 2 years ago) keep track of everything I read here on Goodreads. However, Goodreads will count anything marked "read". For my official list of what I've read, I've only been counting full novels. I wasn't counting novella's unless they were over 100 pages. And I wasn't counting children's chapter books either (like Magic Tree House). As an example... I read 118 books last year, but in addition I read 7 poems, and 136 novella's, short stories, or children's chapter books. Some novella's were ebooks that were 13 pages long, but others were a third of an anthology and were 80-90 pages. Those longer anthologies I'm going to count this year. So my "official" count will be just slightly different than what Goodreads will count for me.

Wow, 118 books that is amazing! Way to go!

Again, I say WOW!! Amazing!

I just use goodreads too. I make a folder for each year and when I am done I put it in the folder. I love this site!
Melodie, I was wondering how you arrived at such an odd number, LOL.
I've kept a list of books read since high school, but since joining this site I also catalog books read here, too, with a folder for each year -- though, like Kate said, there's no way to keep track of/count short stories, novellas, poetry or essays read online. I sub to Writer's Almanac, which means reading a poem a day, and occasionally read shorts online.
As for the challenge... I read 86 books in 2009, and only set a goal of 80 books for 2010. With the (extremely) slow start the year got off to, I wasn't sure I'd even make 50 -- and then I seemed to hit a reading stride and ended up with 104 for the year. This year's goal is 100.

Well, I figured I'd just try and read 2 more than I did last year! I read more last year than I have since I've been keeping track!

It really does!! Isnt is lovely! lol x

Am assuming you don't work! I thought 182 books was a good number, since I work every day.

I keep a reading list on my library website, as well as a record here on Goodreads.

Nell: To add a folder for each year, click on the "my books" tab above to go to your bookshelf. Shelves are listed on the left-hand sidebar. Scroll down to "add shelf." You can make as many shelves as you want. In addition to sorting by year, I also have shelves for genres and for some of my favorite authors. I have also seen people add shelves for challenges (such as the 50-states or around the world), group reads, or for location (books set in certain states or countries).

I have shelves from 2003 forward, since 2003 is when I started keeping spreadsheets. Everything prior to 2003 is on a pre-2003 shelf. Also have a YA shelf.
Shelves are definitely goooood! lol
I believe I have from 2003 forward here, though 2004 is incomplete. I cannot find a listing for that year, though I've kept track of books read since about 1984. There is nothing listed in the back of my journals for that year, and I have never had a year I did not read. Never. Not since kindergarten, at least. I also have two "decade" shelves, 1980 and 1990, which are not complete, but convenient for slotting books I know I read during HS and college.

I sort of work part-time. But, I only have to be actually at the office about 5 days a month. Those are usually the only 5 days that I work more than 4 or 5 hours in a day. And my office is only 1 1/2 miles away. Any further and I told my boss I'd quit. Also, for those 5 days, I can go in whenever I want as long as I put in the time and get the work done- the work itself is about 4-6 hours worth so if I want I can spend most of the day reading or on GR as long as I get the work done. Also, my boss has to buy and pick up my meal and deliver it to me at the office or I stop work and come home and don't return. (My husband is my boss, feel really sorry for him because I hate working and take it out on him.)
Shay: I want a job like yours! *g*
Heidi: The "back shelves" were a product of a couple nights when I couldn't sleep, couldn't concentrate on the book I was reading, and was bored.

Shhhh!!! Best job I've ever had, but I act like I'm doing my husband a favor. Which, of course, I AM!!!
I don't bother making folders for each year as that's just one more folder on my already crowded virtual shelves. You can, however, sort books by date read, so then you can find out what you read in different years. Just go to your read folder, and sort by date read (or date added, etc.).

I only sort by year. To try and do them any other way would just be too much for me to try and keep track of. The only other shelf I have besides the yearly ones is one for YA fiction.
I have all mine sorted into folders by genre, and also shelves for authors whose works I have alot of. Years read would put my 20+ folders into the 30+ range. lol That would just be too much to search through.

That is super cool! Now I can keep track of all my GR friends :)
Two months now behind us. How is everyone doing in meeting their challenge goal? I am currently on book 19 of 100. February got off to a slow start, but I more than made up for it the last couple weeks. Here's hoping I can keep up the pace!

Way to go Shay and Jennifer! Maintaining the pace seems to be the big thing. Too easy to get sidetracked (and there's been a lot going on around here locally the last two weeks), and hard to get the momentum back once off-pace.

I think I'm going to wait another month or two to up my goal. I have to keep in mind, too, that December seems to be my worst month. So, I have to factor that in.
