message 1: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I got my first pair of glasses when I was 9 years old. I was told my eyes were so weak because I read so much. By the time I was in college I was like Mr. Magoo. Not only can I not drive without my glasses (or contacts), I can't find my car without them.

So I'm guessing that members of Goodreads are probably all myopic.

Lori Astigmatic here.

I think that the assumption that our eyes are weak due to reading a lot, or reading in the dark, is an old wives tale. Jake was at the eye doctor last spring, and I asked him about reading in the dark.

Still, I'm curious, how many of us are near-sighted?!

Ken (playjerist) | 721 comments I’m blind drunk.

message 4: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I have age-related myopia -- need glasses for reading.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I've needed glasses since I was eleven. Yes, it's probably from all the reading I've done all my life.

Now, I need bifocals, and I have glasses just for computing.

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Looking at this page, I'm seeing a bunch of Google ads for Lasik vision correction, eye examinations, and an online learning course in optometry...

Personally, I'm nearsighted and also have an astigmatism in my left eye.

message 7: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Presbyopia -- that's what I have.

message 8: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments No problems yet. I do hold menus slightly farther from my face than I used to, but nowhere near full arms-length.

They have churches for that.

I'm nearsighted and have worn glasses or contacts since 10. I don't need to wear them around the house or anything, but I wouldn't be able to read a street sign unless I were right under it, or recognize a friend walking toward me from 35 yards.

Are you singing that to the tune of "I'm a Pimp in Every Sense of the Word" by Jay-Z?

**resists googling**

Resistance is futile.

message 19: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) My arms shrunk in length. It was alarming how quickly that happened. They seemed to be getting longer and longer. Then all of a sudden they weren't long enough. I now wear progressive lenses as a result. Damn arms!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I had lazik done several years ago and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Wearing contacts all day long until my eyes burned was not fun, and I hated reading in bed with glasses on.

janine | 7709 comments i'm nearsighted and got my first pair of glasses the summer i turned 13. i think my braces were already out by then, but i really hated those glasses. now i like wearing glasses.

I have 20/20 beer goggles.

Yes to glasses! And I love my glasses and I'm not giving them back. My ten year old is going to need them, too, I can tell, but he's resistant.

Jaye | 180 comments tri-focals !

message 24: by Jammies (new)

Jammies I have always been near-sighted in one eye and far-sighted in the other. I have worn glasses with different prescriptions for each lens since I was 15.

Now as I age, I may be looking at bifocals. *sigh*

message 25: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) You meant to say "looking through bifocals." Right?

message 26: by Sarah (last edited Jan 07, 2011 08:05AM) (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I've had glasses since I was five (nearsighted). Both of my sisters read just as much as me and didn't need glasses. Luck of the draw. I've never minded them. I wear contacts for shows unless I'm being very lazy, but mostly prefer my glasses.

ETA: Zu has the best eyes of anyone I've ever met. She can spot an animal at the edge of the woods a mile away, and other things I can only see through binoculars.

message 30: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments near-sighted means you can't see far? I can never keep that straight. I'm that one. Or at least I was until I had them fixed. Now I've got 20/20 in one eye and better than that in the other eye. WHOO! Also, I can lay sideways on the couch watching television without my glasses getting squished all wonky to where I can't see anymore and they dig into my face painfully. How do you glasses-lovers deal with that crap? Or are you all the same folks who don't watch tv?

message 31: by Lori (new)

Lori Did you have Lasik too?

I'm too nervous...

I don't watch a lot of TV but I do hate that squishy wonky glasses thing when lying on the couch.

message 32: by Jammies (new)

Jammies :writhes:

message 33: by smetchie (last edited Jan 07, 2011 10:19AM) (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I couldn't do the actual "lasik" with the flap and everything because my eyes were too jacked. But I had laser surgery on them. Best thing I've done for myself ever. Right up there with quitting smoking. But it was a LOT more fun than quitting smoking because I got wonderful drugs, there was almost no pain, and I only miss glasses a tiny bit.

Writhuenza.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I was fortunate to have my lazik taken care of by my mother in law who's worked for the same lazik surgeon for 15 years. It's not cheap, that's for sure.

It's such an easy surgery. It was over in 10 minutes and I felt nothing. The smell is yuck, but hey 10 minutes of burning smell is nothing compared to being able to see when you wake up first thing in the morning.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) My doctor had a machine that did wavefront mapping on my eyes (it is an extra cost, but for something permanent, why wouldn't you spent extra to get it right), which helps them get a more accurate result and reduce halos. I've never had an issue with them at all.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Yeah, the money factor is rough. If I had to go back to how I was before though (practically blind as a bat), I would give up a few years of vacations to get the surgery again. My eyes burned so badly from contacts.

message 39: by smetchie (last edited Jan 07, 2011 03:31PM) (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I had all those halos and night vision issues before the surgery. Afterwards I'd say it's a little bit better. It was so funny when they were talking about that being the worst side affect. I was so confused. It took a while before I understood that I'd been living with that stuff all along. Once I got to that realization I was like, "Well shit! Go ahead and burn my eyes into the right shape! What have I got to lose?"

It is expensive but I don't have to buy contact lenses any more. It's gonna be a while before I break even but I will eventually!

message 40: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart My eye doctor says I'm as nearsighted as I'm gonna get. I don't want contacts, and I look weird without my glasses on. I think I look like a dude.
