Another group was doing this and I thought it might be fun. Post some pictures of your bookshelves. I did not want to do so on a public list.

This is a bit embarrassing, since we are living in a small mobile home next to the construction site of our house deep in the forests. Most of my books are in boxes, but my To Be Read piles I insist are kept available. These are crowding us out. Chris complains.

On the piano bench - the boxes contain books of course:

By my sleeping area:

This Chris says is gonna fall and crush me in the wee hours;-)

Tom | 95 comments Wow - THAT is impressive, my friend! I actually only have a handful of books at this point. I stopped buying them and started getting books from the library since I was sick of moving boxes and boxes of books around that I rarely read more than once. Not to mention the $$ I was dropping on books. I have a few that are keepers and every now and then I have a "slip" at a used book store. But I try my best to pass the books on to someone or take them somewhere for someone else to read. I've read about people who leave books randomly on subways, buses, to be found and enjoyed by others, which I think is a cool idea.

Loren Olson (lorenaolsonmd) | 55 comments Over the past four years I have started contributing my read-only-once books to the Planned Parenthood book sale or to our churh's annual "garage sale." I have other books, I could never part with. Never. These are books that for a variety of reasons have seemed to be life changing. It feels as if my life might go back to where it was if I let go of them.

For the past six months, I have been using a Kindle. I love it far more than I expected to, but those special books? I buy a hardcopy too.

Indeed - it is nailed to the wall. Come on, let's see some more pictures. I need some ideas for bookselves in the new house. Also how do you organize you books?

Nancy | 2838 comments There's a picture of one of my bookshelves on my profile page, but I'm not sure how to upload it here.

Matthew (paco) Like Tom, I've had to give up on purchasing books. The final straw was the move from MA back to Seattle. (Although the amount of money I would spend each year on books also played a part.)

I had so many books the only economical method of transporting them was Amtrak freight. Truly, truly ridiculous. I started the purge when I unpacked, and it took me three years to finally part with all but my special editions (signed or significantly gifted) or those I perennially re-read.

I keeping toying with the idea of a Kindle, but I have to admit I balk at the inability to use it for electronic resources from the library. Electronic storage may be near-infinite, but economically I can't justify the expense of even a fraction of what I read each year.

Long story short, I now own about a dozen novels and probably 15 reference books, and all of them live in a box in my closet until I feel the need to dig them out.

Ali (alike) | 6 comments I am now down to one bookshelf and am seriously dependent on my Kindle and ebooks. I miss the physical objects but practically speaking, I'm more likely to read something on the Kindle because it's more portable.

Matthew, I think the utility of a Kindle really depends on what you tend to read. I've been devouring a lot of papers in PDF format and books in the public domain.

There is also Kindle lending available now but it has extremely restricted DRM.

I have a Kindle and an iPad, but just cannot get used to reading novels on them. I do read a lot of work related PDFs I make from website articles, etc., and short stories (esp erotica). But, for some reason I need a real live novel. I do get some iBook duplicates for some novels just so I can search them. But, thats rare.

When (and if) the house is ever done, I'll have plenty of room for book shelves which I want to surround myself with, like having my reading area in the midst of a maze. The problem is expense. Any suggestions for cheap, DIY book and DVD shelves?

Beth | 9 comments Excellent bookcase! I love them :D When I've cleared mine up a bit I'l post some pictures, I adore seeing peoples bookshelves. I've probably got over 1000 at the moment but they are all over the house. Got some major tidying to do!

Pia (piaveleno) | 11 comments Oh wow! I really want to drop in and organize those bookshelves!

My SO loves my Kindle because the books aren't going to take over the house, and I love it because I don't pull a muscle sorting and making room for new ones. Well, less often anyway. I still look for paperback in certain genres.

We probably have six sets of shelves, plus boxes of books that are less likely to be reread. It's a healthy addiction!

Slow progress Nancy. Kitchen, on bath, utility and laundry are drywalled and being painted. Still a lot to do on BR and Library/study.

We've been 'discussing' shelving, styles and such and of course want everything on display. Gods, ole farts in a LTR can certainly argue about anything.
