Read much UF? I've come across a few popcorn ones that are low on the brainpower and high in fun.

message 152: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) Ok I managed to figure out it's vampire related.. I recently read Let Me In.. does that count?

message 153: by [deleted user] (new)

UF=Urban Fantasy. Basically fantasy set in the modern day world with some magic and monsters and such.

Stuff like The Dresden Files.

message 154: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) Cool, never heard of it.. marked to read.

message 155: by [deleted user] (new)

Give Monster Hunter International a shot too. It's like paramilitary urban fantasy.

It's a bit predictable, but you'll be having enough fun reading it that you won't mind. Sort of like the mindless Summer Blockbusters that Hollywood puts out.

message 156: by John (new)

John Beachem | 16 comments Yep. I'd second the recommendations of Dresden and Monster Hunter.

message 157: by Vlad (new)

Vlad | 43 comments ...paramilitary urban fantasy...
If there isn't LARP with that theme yet - well, there should be.

message 158: by [deleted user] (new)

So I've recently finished Consider Phlebas and The Summer Tree. Both fell a bit short of expectations.

Currently reading The Wandering Fire and will finish out the Fionavar Tapestry with The Darkest Road after.

Still a bunch of other BotMs to read, though...

message 159: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Yeah, those damn BotMs...I have at least half a dozen to read.

It really is sad :(

message 162: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah. I'm tempted to do something with the group, just don't know what.

message 163: by Richard (new)

Richard | 2 comments Reading Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa

message 164: by [deleted user] (new)

I've got that on my TBR pile. I dunno when I'll ever actually get to it, though.

Stupid time, why is there never enough of it.

It's a fairly dense read, not hard just very long. To be honest, at 2/3 of the way through I'm not finding it as good as I hoped (or as the reviews promised).

message 166: by [deleted user] (new)

Huh, well, guess there's no need to push it to the front of the line then :P

message 167: by Camilo (new)

Camilo (cpayan) Finished reading A Song of Ice and Fire, now I'm reading the Brothers Karamazov, getting bogged down. As for ASOIAF that was pretty great.

message 168: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 10, 2011 11:45AM) (new)

edit: i'm an idjit.

Also, I've never read Karamazov. I'm such a heathen

message 169: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat It's really easy to get bogged down in that one. It's just like that.

message 170: by Nimit (new)

Nimit (nimesis) ASOIAF goes by so quickly. I started reading Game of Thrones about two months ago and I'm already on A Storm of Swords now. Trying to finish book 3 and 4 before A Dance with Dragons comes out. Not sure if I'm gonna make it...

message 171: by Camilo (new)

Camilo (cpayan) slowpoke. I read them all in like a month. It was a pretty intense month, though... mistakes were made.

A lot of stuff goes down in A Storm of Swords, Nim. You'll fly through the last half of the book.

message 172: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Yeah, I re-read A Game of Thrones last month, but probably won't get to the other three until the beginning of July. I think I read them in a month or less the first time.

message 173: by [deleted user] (new)

I was debating on going through the rest of them, after re-reading AGoT, but I don't want to anymore. I'm just going into ADWD with whatever is left in my feeble memories.

message 174: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I'm kind of excited about doing so, but that's just me :)

Also, Pox: An American History -- better than expected, so far.

message 175: by [deleted user] (new)

Currently at the beginning of a binge with the Garret P.I. Series.

Detective noir in a Fantasy setting.

Fun popcorny stuff.

message 176: by Camilo (new)

Camilo (cpayan) I enjoyed Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. How does the Garret PI Series compare?

message 177: by [deleted user] (new)

It's about the same level of fun as Dresden.

If you were to take Dresden, strip him of magic, then set him down in a version of Middle Earth that had been run through the Nightside a couple times, you'd end up with this series.

At least, that's how it comes off so far after book 3.

message 178: by Camilo (new)

Camilo (cpayan) Sounds good. I'll throw it on the to-read pile, then :D

I'm currently reading L.A. Noire: The Collected Stories, which can be downloaded for free and it's really fun so far. I'm also reading Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine, which it's interesting and a fast read. I recommend them both.

message 180: by [deleted user] (new)

Will check those out, thanks :)

message 181: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I had a lot of fun watching my boyfriend playing LA Noire. Probably more than I would have had playing the game itself.

message 182: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) hello reddit.
went to the cottage this weekend..
read 'the fall' by Albert Camus (terrible) and 'the hunger games' by Suzanne Collins (unexpectedly great!)
made it to my breaking point in Tigana.. can't see how I'll manage to finish it.

message 183: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't push yourself to read it, man. There are plenty of other books out there that you might actually enjoy.

Also, I still haven't bothered to read the Hunger Games. I don't want to, partly because everyone seems to rave about them.

Fathermocker | 22 comments Hipster!
It's a good book, really fun. But I can't forgive you for not liking Camus, Steve.

message 185: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd tell you my favorite book

But you've probably never heard of it.

message 186: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) I love The Stranger, I mean LOVE IT. I'm still going to dig through Camus' work, it was just that damn frenchman in The Fall I disliked.

message 187: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Ala wrote: "I'd tell you my favorite book

I heard of it before it was published.

message 188: by [deleted user] (new)

Puhlease. I don't do published.

I read it on a cave wall in...well, it's a really remote place and you've probably never been there.

message 189: by Jodie (new)

Jodie | 3 comments I just finished reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (finally). I had heard all the hype around it, but had no idea what to expect. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It definitely was not predictable. I am planning on starting the sequel as soon as I can get to a bookstore.

For everyone who loves American Gods, they are making a movie out of it.

message 190: by [deleted user] (new)

I still haven't gotten to the Dragon Tattoo book. Someday, someday.

Also, I believe the American Gods thing is an HBO series.

message 191: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I just finished the third of those. I enjoyed them. According to Stieg Larsson the Swedish eat some really disgusting stuff that I've never seen on the menu at IKEA.

message 192: by Nimit (new)

Nimit (nimesis) I'm starting the Hunger Games. Does anyone have thoughts on this series? I haven't really gotten into it yet but I already bought the books, so hopefully it doesn't suck.

message 193: by [deleted user] (new)

Haven't read it myself yet, but everyone else seems to love the shit out of those books.

message 194: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I plan to read them, but haven't gotten around to it, I keep hearing great things

I devoured The Hunger Games earlier this summer, though I haven't managed to sit down with the sequels just yet. I found it really accessible and exciting--the first book I'd read in months that I simply couldn't put down. It was a little reminiscent of Battle Royale or The Long Walk, if you've read those, but had a feeling all it's own. I hope you enjoy it!

message 196: by Nimit (new)

Nimit (nimesis) I started reading it (about 100 pages in) and she did a good job setting up the environment. It took a little while to get used to the YA writing, cause I haven't read YA books for a while, but its pretty good so far. Definitely reminds me of Battle Royale.

message 197: by [deleted user] (new)

Would you read Battle Royale first?

message 198: by Nimit (new)

Nimit (nimesis) I haven't actually read Battle Royale. I watched the movie. I don't think it really matters which you "consume" first though.

message 199: by Polarka (new)

Polarka I was disappointed with Hunger Games. Because it is so popular, I was expecting something better. Anyway, I think it is good for summer reading. I plan to read Battle Royale. Friend read the manga series and claims it is very brutal (compared to movie)...

I read them all earlier this year. The first one is the strongest in the series. It totally could stand alone and is really just a great book. The second one felt like just a bridge to the third. But the sequels were still really good! I enjoyed them a lot, they were quick and interesting reads.
