MARTINA'S FEBRUARY AUTHOR'S WEB CHALLENGE - 2/10Earlier today (er, make that yesterday) I finished Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, #5) by Patricia Briggs (★★★★).
This is an urban fantasy series with a smattering of romance. More of the latter in the last few books - the first few had romantic tension, but no follow-through, so to speak. It's about a coyote shifter named Mercy who was raised by werewolves. These days she's a mechanic, but the wolves still keep an eye on her. In particular, her neighbor, Adam, who is also the alpha of the local wolf pack.
In this particular book, Mercy and her friends become the target of a fae who wants something Mercy has. But, that part of the plot is almost secondary to the personal growth that occurs in many of the characters: Mercy and Samuel in particular, though not in the way that you're probably guessing right now. :-)
While the plot of this one was a bit lacking, this remains one of my favorite series in the PNR/UF genres (especially the first three books). A sixth in the series, River Marked, is due out in March 2011. There's also a spin-off series featuring Samuel's brother, Charles, that is more closely PNR. That series, named "Alpha & Omega" currently consists of a prequel novella and two more novels, though a third is due out in 2012.
This is not a series I'll abandon anytime soon. I'll be picking up both Mercy Thompson #6 and Alpha & Omega #3 as soon as they're out in paperback. :-)

I'm really not doing that well. Shadowfever is a monster of a book!
I'm not doing well either...with getting to choose the authors, you'd think this would be a challenge I'd be rushing through. Shadowfever is a big book...totally worth it, though :) I found myself reading it slowly last month so I wouldn't miss a thing!I say "Wow" to those readers who are at or past the halfway mark on this challenge and it's only a 1/3 of the way through the month!

MARTINA'S FEBRUARY AUTHOR'S WEB CHALLENGE - 3/10In the wee hours of yesterday morning I finished My Soul to Keep (Soul Screamers, #3) by Rachel Vincent (★★★★). This is a YA UF/PNR series featuring bean sidhes (banshees). It's also one of my top 5 YA series right now (maybe even higher now that the Vampire Academy & Hunger Games series have been concluded).
In this particular book, teenage bean sidhe, Kaylee discovers a handful of her fellow students taking a new drug called "frost". Unfortunately, "frost" is really demon's breath - a substance found only in the Netherworlds - a substance that at best will permanently strip a user of their mental faculties, at worst, kill them. Kaylee and friends must find out where the "frost" is coming from and put a stop to it before their friends end up dead. Only they soon learn that the denizens of Netherworld have something far worse than "frost" in store for the teenagers in town.
As I mentioned earlier, this is one of my favorite YA series and will be one I'll read as long as they're being released. A fourth book, My Soul to Steal, just became available. A fifth one, If I Die, is due to be released on October 1, 2011 and that's currently the last one contracted.
This author also has a finished adult UF/PNR series called Shifter (or sometimes Werecat) series that is 6 books long and begins with Stray. And she's started a brand new adult PNR series called Unbound. The first book is titled Blood Bound and is due out September 1, 2011.
