Thanks for the suggestion Ann, I'll try that series next. It's hard with Anne McCaffrey for me to know what to read - I either love it or hate it. Sometimes I find her series are so different it's almost like they were written by different people. Maybe it's just because she's been writing so long that with the several decades between them her style (or attitude) has changed. Although I think I've only ever read the first books in any of her series (except the Catteni - I read at least two of those) so I don't really know if that's the case or not.

MARTINA'S FEBRUARY AUTHOR'S WEB CHALLENGE - 8/10
Death's Mistress (Dorina Basarab, #2) by Karen Chance (★★★). For the series overview, please see my review of the first book in this series, Midnight's Daughter, here.
In this book, Dory is helping a friend track down a faerie relic, a mission that leads her on a wild goose chase hunting down some pretty savory characters, some vamp, some fae. The best part is that she does most of it with a still-talking severed head in her hand. :-)
The quirky humor is one of the things I love about this author, both in this series and in the Cassandra Palmer series. However, the biggest problem I have with the CP series is also present in this book: it's the way the action is seriously non-stop. Poor Dory almost literally doesn't get a breather or a chance to re-group. Normally this wouldn't be too bad, but the pacing just feels frantic to me rather than exciting. However, it's a problem that seems to be specific to me since most other reviewers love both this as well as the CP series.
I WILL say that I really liked how a particular part of Louis-Cesar's backstory was filled in at the end of this book. That alone was worth reading for!
While there doesn't seem to be another book in this series planned yet, there is a new Cassandra Palmer novel out soon - book #5, Hunt the Moon will be released June 7, 2011.
