Ally Shadow and Bone (The Grisha Trilogy, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

THE SERVANTS CALLED them malenchki, little ghosts, because they were the smallest and youngest, and because they haunted the Duke's house like giggling phantoms, darting in and out of rooms, hiding in cupboards to eavesdrop, sneaking into the kitchen to steal the last of the summer peaches.

message 165: by Julie (new)

Julie I haven't started reading this yet but I just got it in the mail and thanks to this thread I always check out the first couple of lines. I love the prologue to this one!...

"I know a place on this earth that contains wonders enough to stop the breath. A place where the very rocks whisper and whine, where the rivers boil and the snow-studded peaks thrust into a bowl of blue; where great shaggy beasts press the earth with cloven hooves or threaten with claw and fang; where new life and lurking death coexist in the shadows of varicolored pools.

I went to this place to search for what I had lost, but instead found a life unexpected."

Faithful (Faithful, #1) by Janet Fox

message 166: by Bethany (new)

Bethany The weight of their pity is like a stone tied about my neck. I feel it in the little side glances, the puckered skin between frowning brows, the hushed whispers that carry across the purple-gray dusk of twilight like tiny daggers drawing blood.

He isn't coming home.

Bethany My mom didn't show up for dinner tonight. The Star Dwellers (The Dwellers, #2) by David Estes

Ir's late afternoon. Since morning, the trail's been following a line of light towers. That is, the iron remains of what used to be light towers, way back in Wrecker days, time out of mind. It winds through faded, folded hills, burnt grass and prickle bush.
Rebel Heart (Dust Lands, #2) by Moira Young

message 170: by Julie (new)

Julie Down in the laundry room with the bloody-wet floors and the ceiling-high stacks of sheets, wraps, and blankets, Vinita Lynch was elbows-deep in a vat full of dirty pillowcases because she'd promised-she'd sworn on her mother's life-that she'd find a certain windup pocket watch belonging to Private Hugh Morton before the device was plunged into a tub of simmering soapy water and surely destroyed for good. Dreadnought (The Clockwork Century, #3) by Cherie Priest

Bethany Scarlet was descending toward the alley behind the Rieux Tavern when her portscreen chimed from the passenger seat, followed by an automated voice: "Comm received for Mademoiselle Scarlet Benoit from the Toulouse Law Enforcement Department of Missing Persons."
Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer

The world might be sunny-side up today. The big ball of yellow might be spilling into the clouds, runny and yolky and blurring into the bluest sky, bright with cold hope and false promises about fond memories, real families, hearty breakfasts, stacks of pancakes drizzled in maple syrup sitting on a plate in a world that doesn't exist anymore.
Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2) by Tahereh Mafi

Prague, early May. The sky weighed gray over fairy-tale rooftops, and all the world was watching. Satellites had even been tasked to surveil the Charles Bridge, in case the... visitors... returned. Strange things had happened in this city before, but not this strange. At least, not since video existed to prove it. Or to milk it.
Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor

Bethany Tonight, he could have come through the door-the castello is quiet, even the servants asleep in their beds, and Nurse would have let him in-but he chooses the window, climbing through the tangle of night flowers, carrying petals in on his clothes.
Juliet Immortal (Juliet Immortal, #1) by Stacey Jay

message 179: by Bret (new)

Bret Wellman I love Wizard's first rule!!! Just don't do what I did and keep reading the rest of the books... I hated them and they kept getting worse and worse, but I had to know what happened to the charicters. It is like quicksand, be careful.

"Jim Qwilleran slumped in a chair in the Press Club dining room, his six-feet-two telescoped into a picture of dejection and his morose expression intensified by the droop of his oversized mustache."
