This was a great book with a lot of naval action once it got going. O'Brian really knows how to tell a story.

Silvana, I did not think the love stories were confusing. It added to the real life atmosphere of the book and was very indicative of those times. Your friend may be steering you wrong and you should always judge for yourself.
Out of the 78 reviewers and reviews on Amazon; the average review was 4.5 stars out of 5 so I guess you are in the minority. That happens sometimes.
For those of you who are thinking about reading the series; I do not want you to be deterred. Here are a set of separate reviews from Amazon reviewers which basically are as delighted with the book and series as I found them to be. There are 78 distinct and different reviewers and reviews. This series is dynamite and lots of fun to boot.
