Here you can nominate any word that is proudly South African for us to read in March.

Then we take the word we voted on and read a book starting with a letter in the word, or a author's name/surname that starts with the letter.

For example:

Z -
U - Uglies
L - Lover Eternal
U -

Nominations will be open until 10th of February.

I nominated SAMP

An African food made from rough corn. It is starchy and is often eaten with haricot or red beans, dunked in gravy stew.

I love samp in some "boontjie sop" :)

My word that I'd like to nominate is TERT.

Yes it could have a very negative vibe to it, but I'm refering to those things that aunties usually make. Yummy Melktert, souttert, appeltert...

Lauren Smith Souttert? Is that quiche?

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, then I'm throwing in some Dutch words which probably will be the same or more or less the same in Afrikaans:
Stoep
Fiets
Kaars
Boem
Duif
Vogel
Mand
How many words do we need?

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lol, you can nominate two words for the challenge :)

I nominate fiets and vogel. I don't know if I have any books to match but hey I like those words!

message 14: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith What's a vogel? And a mand (month?) My Afrikaans is shoddy...

A vogel is a bird, any bird. And a mand is a basket, a month is maand in dutch. Almost the same but totally different meaning. I don't know if the words are the same in Afrikaans, someone else has to say something intelligent about that.

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Ah, ok, that makes sense. In Afrikaans:
bird - voel (with an umlaut on the 'e')
basket - mandjie (I think. Not sure if there's a non-diminutive version?)
month - maand

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Go Lauren!
Your Afrikaans isn't half as shoddy as you thought

message 18: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I had a Budgie named Vogel. :D
