Melissa A lot of times what makes me want to read a book is seeing the movie (or movie preview) based on it... But after reading the book, I can never look at the movie the same. They change so much!

Beastly was a quick, but nice, read. For anyone else who has read it, what do you think of the movie trailer? They're not making him look like a beast at all. I can see how it would be hard to do that, for the movie, but it really changes the meaning. He still looks HUMAN. What do you think?

Mawgojzeta | 240 comments I have not read the book, but I am going comment anyway:

I had to watch the trailer without sound this morning. Even without sound I feel like I watched an entire movie in 2.5 minutes. Haha! I am guessing I missed some twist, but it sure did seem like a tiny little movie from start to finish.

He does not look beastly.

I haven't read the book, but he really doesn't look Beastly. In fact, I've seen people in the city who look like that, and no one screams in shock.

Melissa Exactly! I've seen pictures of people with scarier designs on them than that. The book is not exactly complex or challenging, but the point of it is to be told from the "Beast's" point of view, in a modern (high school aged) setting-- and to show that beauty is on the inside, etc.

If you take a good looking guy, and you shave him, put "engraved" tattoos all over him, and lock him in a house-- he's still a good looking guy. It doesn't translate well. I think a lot of live action fairy tale adaptations have to tone things down, and it makes them hard to enjoy them.

I think that's the problem. We have made beasts into house pets while they are still beasts.

The New York Times give Beastly a so-so review. It did have a funny line, however.

Mr Pettyfer [he plays the Beast character, Kyle] is fine to look at (he's harder on the ears), though more so after Kyle is cursed by a Goth girl . . .

So according to the Times, he is better looking as the Beast.

Melissa It's all about personal opinion, but I have a feeling a lot of people probably WOULD find him more attractive in his "beast" form. It's just a few gashes and what could be tattoos. It's a little insulting to that community to say that this is "ugly."

If you do a search for the promotional poster, you can see that they still have him prettied up.

Michelle I totally agree! I really liked Beastly and I was excited to see what they would do when I heard that they were making it into a movie. I was sooo disappointed when I saw the trailers and movie posters. I was hoping they would stick a little closer to the book this time (like they did with Twilight--you could almost follow along with the book, when you watch the movie)and make Kyle really...Beastly.
