readers advisory for all discussion

Hi Karen,

I read your 'Readers Advisory' above. I think that what you've done as a project for grad school is brilliant! I'm someone who doesn't have the time to waste on "yuck" books. I'm a certified "book-aholic and "book nerd" and I couldn't be happier with any other monikers.

I just joined a few minutes ago so I haven't had the chance to get a feel for your site or to digest what and who is on it yet.

Thank you for making this kind of interface possible for all of us out here.

So…I'm a little lost. What exactly do I do to help this work? I looked at the different topics explaining this stuff and tried to poke around for examples, but all I see is a buttload of people who ignored the request to not advertise your self-published novels….

there's a section called "so ask already," which is basically people asking for specific kinds of books and other people giving them suggestions of what they might like to read. sort of like what goodreads does on its "recommendations" page, but much more helpful. :)

It's the fourth section underneath "Unread Topics." I'm an app user as well.

no problem. :)

after a while, i decided to make a thread for authors to promote, because it seemed to be useful. so, we do have the one thread now. the project part is long over, so the purpose of the group has evolved somewhat.

I have no idea what this is about, but it sounds interesting. My cause célèbre is to be part of an author jailbreak out of the dungeon of limited genre categories. I, for instance, both write and am eager to read books in the picaresque style. The picaresque is probably one of the oldest genre's, and yet it isn't on Goodread's or Amazon's radar. Therefore my readers will not be able to associate my book with the tradition it came out of. Am I making sense? Is this related at all to your purposes?

Goodreads genres are based on the names of the shelves readers use for their books. To register picaresque on Goodreads radar, several readers need to each create a shelf named picaresque and add books to that shelf. The more readers with that shelf name and the more books on those shelves will lead to more visibility on the genre radar.

This is a great idea. Sometimes you don't need algorithms, you just want a human being (or a post from a human being) to say, here read this great book. Love the idea. And love Good Reads, now I've finally worked this enormous universe out.

sorry - i'm just seeing this now - yes, RA is shorthand for readers' advisory. i'm not here as much as i used to be, but i'm grateful the group is still reasonably active and i hope to be able to return to this wonderful group when my life calms down a bit. but i do love that people are still here. it's really uplifting.

I am presently a Grad student hoping when I graduate next year to work in RA at a library. And will use this as part of my Grad projects as well. I hope to learn more about RA with you.

I am an adjunct professor at UCLA's library school, and I teach readers' advisory as a quarter-long course (there's a lot to it!). I would be happy to answer questions. I also do consulting work at libraries, teaching workshops on readers' advisory and book-talking. Hi Karen and all the book lovers :) I really hope this group is still alive and kicking. I've decided to join after reading your comment on Kevin Wilson's Perfect Little World, and this place seems perfect. Perfect is always suspicious, so.... anyone alive and active here, still, after all those years?

It's alive, but maybe not kicking. People still come by occasionally asking for recommendations so I find it interesting. But it's not a daily occurrence.

my 2021 resolution is to be a better steward of this place. i have been an absentee mom for years.
