message 53: by Michael (new)

Michael My first 45 was Winchester Cathedral by the New Vaudville Band. I can't remember the first LP I bought with my own money but it could have been The Monkees.

First LP I bought with my own $$$ was the soundtrack to Raiders of the Lost Ark. I kid you not.

First CD I bought was So by Peter Gabriel. My folks had just bought a Fisher sound system with one of those new fangled CD players, and Peter Gabriel's album had just come out, so I was able to get that CD and test out the CD player.

That sound system still exists, 25 years later. And it still sounds great.

The stereo in our bedroom is the one with my first CD player. It's a Sony, and it has been my alarm clock for twenty years and still works fine.

Carol | 1678 comments I had a Fisher sound system that I added a 24-disk CD player to - that was my first CD player, and I still have it. I gave the rest of the sound system to my son who left it behind when he moved.
First CD I bought was Dr. Demento! First and only LP I special ordered - Joe Walsh - But Seriously, Folks, for Life's Been Good.

Slightly off topic, in case anyone was interested:

First DVD I bought - Goldfinger

First Blu-Ray I bought - Inglorious Basterds.

message 58: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments First DVD I bought - Spirited Away
I haven't bought a Blu Ray yet, though Zu bought me Pushing Daisies, so I guess that counts.

First VHS tape I owned had The Neverending Story and two Gumby and Pokey short adventures on it.

Sarah | 13814 comments Also, the VHS and the rental RV we were driving from San Antonio to Albuquerque were supposed to arrive on the same day, and I kept getting the two acronyms mixed up.

I bought it when I was 13!

message 61: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I bought several CDs at once. I can only remember two of them at the moment: Billy Joel's Greatest Hits and Escape by Journey. I know one must have been by the Police but I can't remember which.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I the first album I ever bought was Waterloo by ABBA, on 8-track. I think I was ten.

I did not care for Shaun Cassidy, I am proud to say. :)

I loved that tv show when I was a kid.

My first 45 was a Sesame Street recording -

Oscar the Grouch singing "I Love Trash" on one side and Bert and Ernie singing "Rubber Ducky" on the other side. :) I bought it at a Jackson Square toy store in New Orleans during an outing with my dad. That was a good day - he pulled me out of school for the day so we could have a special daddy/daughter day. We went to the zoo then we rode the streetcar to The French Quarter. We stopped at Central Grocery for a bag of bread crumbs that was taller than me to feed the pigeons (because it wasn't illegal back then), then we stopped by the toy store before heading back to catch the trolley to go home. I got that record and a Frog & Toad book.

First cassette I purchased - U2's The Joshua Tree

First CD I purchased - Twin Peaks soundtrack

No, I think you should definitely do that, RA. :)

And KD, how did you know?! I WAS a Parker Stevenson fan! I got into quite the heated argument about which Hardy Boy was hotter with a friend with less refined taste than mine, back in 7th grade.

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments My oldest sister had a massive crush on Parker Stevenson. I saw him a few years ago at a club in Santa Monica. The same night my hair caught fire.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I wish I had the Twin Peaks soundtrack, Heidi. I love that fever dream sound.
I have The Joshua Tree on vinyl still.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Aynge wrote: "My oldest sister had a massive crush on Parker Stevenson. I saw him a few years ago at a club in Santa Monica. The same night my hair caught fire."

Wait, what, Aynge? Your HAIR caught on fire?! Parker Stevenson had quite an effect on you!

message 69: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments My hair caught on fire because it's really long and I was standing too close to a candle. I didn't see Parker Stevenson until later that night. I wouldn't even have noticed him if it wasn't for my friend jabbing me with her elbow and pointing at him. That was right before last call, and it looked like he was waiting for someone.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Wait, go back to the hair catching on fire again, Aynge. I'm guessing you noticed quickly enough that there wasn't major loss or pain? Or was that right before you decided to try a really short style?

As for Parker, he was waiting for ME! I know it!

message 71: by Aynge (last edited Feb 08, 2011 02:51PM) (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments No, I didn't notice at all. But all my friends jumped me at the same moment and slapped the fire out. That's the real reason why that night stands out in memory.

And then that dwarf came along as scared the bejeezis out of me.

I never watched The Hardy Boys. Or if I did I can't remember it. But I do remember my sister being obsessed with Parker. His pictures were all over her room. She's also the reason I got into Journey. They were ahead of my time, but my sister was crazy about Steve Perry. I came to love their music.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Dwarf...

message 73: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments For some reason I'm afraid of dwarfs. I was standing in the back and my eye caught something moving down near the floor and I almost jumped on top of the bar before I realized it was a little person. Practically peed my pants.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Hahahahahahahaha!!! You had quite a night, Aynge! Celebrity spotting, hair pyrotechnics, and a dwarf!

That's almost as exciting as the day I got to see both Leonard Nimoy AND William Shatner! It was at the Book Expo in L.A., three years ago. They both had books they were signing.
It was weird, seeing them. They're not supposed to be in my world, real people...

message 75: by Aynge (last edited Feb 08, 2011 03:34PM) (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I didn't watch Star Trek. It always put me to sleep. I associate Leonard Nimoy with "In Search Of." Now that was a TV show I definitely remember watching as a kid.

The night with the hair fire and the dwarf.... I remember it was the beginning of the end of my clubbing days. Sure it's fun to go dancing with my friends, watching them sing karaoke, enjoying live bands, etc. But the car chases, having to drive everybody home because of my teetotalism, being licked by weirdos... it starts to get old.

When you're sitting in a strange car, groping around for the ignition in the dark, trying to find the stick shift in a car that's an automatic, all the while keeping one eye on your sh*tfaced buddy so she doesn't throw up all over you, that's when you hear yourself muttering "I'm too old for this sh*t."

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Aynge, you keep tossing in these little details! Licked by weirdos?!

message 77: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments Well, this is Los Angeles. And I've always attracted the freaks.

You're introduced to someone. You shake hands, then let go, right? Some people see that as an invitation to pull you close as if to tell you a secret, and then lick your neck. WTF? It's happened more than once. Some guy ran up to my car and began licking the window. Thank God it was rolled up.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments (note to self: don't shake hands in L.A.)

I had no idea licking was a trend, in L.A., or anywhere, Aynge! Yikes!

message 79: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I find the closer you get to Venice Beach, the more likely it is to happen.

message 80: by Jammies (new)

Jammies I love you all, just so you know. :D

(And Jax, I was a Parker fan too, and would not have argued with you)
