Heidi Jaimie - I listened to the first two Sookie Stackhouse books on audio and they were good (unlike the series that shall not be named); however, I am just not into vamp books, so I haven't listened to anymore. I also started Grave Sight - the Harper Connelly series, but I did not like Harper or her "brother". Sookie is a much better character.

message 652: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments Harper is a bit strange I will give you that but I liked her - she's quirkie. The Aurora Tegarden (Starts with Real Murders) and the Lily Bard (starts with Shakespears Landlord) are both very good and not at all paranormal. Aurora took me till book two to get hooked but Harris' books are always really quick reads.

message 653: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Jaimie - I may have to give the other two series a look :)

message 654: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments I am not trying to add to your already huge pile of books but I thought that since you are into mystries that you might have read them.

No problem. Thanks for the recommendations :) I always kid in jest about my tbr pile - but I love reading books others recommend so we can discuss :)

message 656: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Heidi I thought the Harper/brother relationship was a little eewww myself. I still think Queen Betsy rules in the vampire genre, at least they have some humor.

message 657: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Sheila are Queen Betsy books written by the author who writes the Undead and Unwed books??? I have that book in my tbr pile and plan to listen to it on audio.

message 658: by Sheila (last edited Mar 29, 2010 11:18AM) (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) yep, Maryjanice Davidson. Queen Betsy is the star of the unwed books. They probably should be read in order especially the first one first. They are great on audio

Heidi Sheila wrote: "yep, Maryjanice Davidson. Queen Betsy is the star of the unwed books. They probably should be read in order especially the first one first. They are great on audio"

OK great. Good to know. Which one is first? I thought Undead and Unwed was first???

message 660: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments Sheila I have read all the Queen Betsy books! The last two were a little eehh to me but I love Betsy. She is so funny!

message 661: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Heidi you are so right. Undead and Unwed is the first of 9. (Not a good omen for your TBR pile is it?)

message 662: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments Sheila have you read any of the Fred the Mermaid books?

message 663: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Sheila wrote: "Heidi you are so right. Undead and Unwed is the first of 9. (Not a good omen for your TBR pile is it?)"

9!! Double ugh!

message 664: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Heidi wrote: "Amanda - is "Stopping Time" separate from the Wicked Lovely series? I am confused."

They're free for Kindles, you should check it out. They do have a Kindle for PC software that's pretty neat. Also Wicked Lovely is available for pre-order on the Kindle for .99 cents. That silly Kindle and the cheap cost of books!

Melodie (melodieco) Jaimie wrote: "Harper is a bit strange I will give you that but I liked her - she's quirkie. The Aurora Tegarden (Starts with Real Murders) and the Lily Bard (starts with Shakespears Landlord) are both very good ..."

I didn't like the Harper books at all, but I read 3 of them, I think. I like the Lily Bard books, but thought the Aurora Teagarden books were boring.

message 666: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) Sheila wrote: "Heidi I thought the Harper/brother relationship was a little eewww myself. I still think Queen Betsy rules in the vampire genre, at least they have some humor."

I used to love the Betsy, Queen of the Vamps, books but the last 2 or 3 have been a waste of time. I figure I'll get the next one from the library.

message 667: by Traci (new)

Traci Just finished Pretties, and I liked it better than Uglies. This one was much more plot as opposed to setting up the world like in the first book. I would recommend the series so far, but it seems like one of those "love it or hate it" types of books.

message 668: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) Finished [image error] last night and really liked it. The ending made me anxious for the next one! Started Revealers by Amanda Marrone .

Thanks for the update. I think I will skip the series if it is a love it or hate it one - -as we all know which side I will likely be on. Have you read any other books by S. Westerfeld? I have heard his other series are better than Uglies.

Ha! Good to know I am not alone. It is hard enough being human, why add all these other crazy things :)

Sheila (sheilaj) Jaimie wrote: "Sheila have you read any of the Fred the Mermaid books?"

No I haven't but just added Sleeping with Fishes to the ever growing TBR list. Are they as funny as Queen Betsy?

Not as good as Betsy but Fred is pretty funny.

Understood and I totally get you :)

message 675: by [deleted user] (new)

Bluemoon - I like the HON books but the writing isn't that great. I think the series is mostly liked by teens. I'm so absorbed in the series now that I want to see how it ends, even if the last book was the pits. If you like UF that are a little on the naught side, you might try the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian.

message 676: by [deleted user] (new)

If you didn't like the first one, don't read the rest. Too many good books, too little time!

Have you checked out Vampire Academy? I really liked them. Rose is the main character and she is a dhampir but she is badass like in a butt kicking way.

I'm hoping this isn't sarcasm and a dig at my Kindle! In the event that it's not, it's a free download from Amazon that you use to view Kindle books on. You can download it here. They also have software for Macs, blackberries, and iphones. Pretty good way to take advantage the of free and cheap books that they have.

But if it is sarcasm, then GRRRRRR!!

message 679: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Not sarcasm Peep, would I do that? Actually I think they are very cool and have given it VERY serious consideration. The thing I like best about Kindle is the ability to make the font bigger for old farts like me that can't read paperback print. So no need to growl :)

Thanks for the info. BTW I just download the Kindle app for my ipod

message 680: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Sheila - small font in cozy mysteries drives me crazy too. I posted something about that on the cozy group awhile back.

message 681: by [deleted user] (new)

That's one of the things I like about the Kindle too, Sheila. Allows me to put off buying prescription reading glasses. Too bad I'm starting to have problems reading things on my phone now!

message 682: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) If I got a Kindle it would be because of the font. I know I am screwed if I can't get a book either in LP or audio. Sometimes normal print is OK but LP is so much less eye strain for me. A lot of the books that are talked about here on GR are not available to me in the big print format but if I thought they were available on Kindle I might get one especially now that they are cheaper. I have a birthday coming up in a week and hubby asked me today what I would like? Big mistake on his part. I am concerned that Amazon and some of the publishing companies are having disputes like the Janet Evanovich books aren't available for Kindle (at least they weren't) that would be a bummer

Sheila - Come over to the light side!

Peep - Are you absolutely in love with your Kindle now?

message 685: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Shannen, I have offered it my hand in marriage.

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Bluemoon wrote: "I think if they come out with a colored version of kindle I would get one. Maybe...but I love my books."

I have thought about getting a Nook but I am hesitating too.
I think I may get one to put books on that I am not getting for my classroom library, but books for my students will still have to be books.

message 687: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Yeah, I have free e-books on my phone for the same reason...

message 688: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) This is where I mainly get my list of books from (all threads from the same website). Keep in mind that they change rapidly. Sometimes books are only free for a few hours, even! Also the Kindle can read pdf's too.

Wow Peep. p.s. Don't do it Sheila. Stick with real books. Come on! Use that million dollar library you were talking about!

You don't need colored Kindles when you can by skins from DecalGirl. Do it, do it!

I wasn't trying to put pressure for the vamp series, just thought that is your looking for another ya vamp book to test the waters I would suggest that one. I always have suggestions for non paranormal ones as well! ;)

For the first few days that I had the Kindle, I kept going up to the top right side of it to turn the page! It took me a while to get used to it. I'm still alternating though!

message 694: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Bluemoon wrote: "I meant I don't like black and white"

I don't think they have color ones yet, if they do they will be expensive. The thing with the Kindle is that it is an e-ink screen, it looks just like a book, not like reading on the computer. I can look away from it and not have a page burn on my eyes. Sighhhhhhhh... wish you were here!

message 695: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I still love my paper books though! They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I currently have about 5 paper books here that I need to read and 8 digital books on the Kindle that I also need to read. Took the kids to the library for story time and guess what? Picked up two more books when I told myself not to! This was after I added two more free books to my Kindle last night...

message 696: by [deleted user] (new)

Bluemoon wrote: "I meant I don't like black and white"

Gotcha! I thought a colored screen would be nice until I spent time reading on my Kindle. The e-ink technology is wonderful and you feel like you're reading a book and no eye strain. However, it is expensive, especially if you currently use a libary or like to read more current releases.

message 697: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Catching Fire and am starting Deadly Little Lies so I can finish that series and move on to a new one. :)

message 698: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I'm not even at the first step Bluemoon, I refuse to admit that I have a problem. I blame the authors, publishers, and the library - not myself. Too many good books out there!

It's called "pre-contemplation" Peep.
