Debbie | 31 comments I just finished re-reading the first 4 books from the Vampire Diaries series. Now I just have to get the new 5th one.

Have you read a lot of Laurie Halse Anderson? I've only read Prom, and I had a REALLY hard time relating to the main character... I was wondering what her other books were like.

message 103: by Ann (new)

Ann | 48 comments I just finished both Twilight and The Sea of Monsters. I enjoyed both more than I thought I would!:)
I'm now reading Eldest (finally!) and am listening to the audio (Jim Dale) version of Around the World in Eighty Days. It's my first audio book, and I think I'm falling in love with the style!:D

What did you think? I read it last year and reviewed it. You should check it out. It's an interesting book.

message 105: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1 comments I just finished Need by Carrie Jones. Very similar to Twilight in that the main character, Zara moves away from her mother to be a new student in a dreary Maine town. There are two boys that also vie for her attention as well as paranormal occurences. It is romantic and mysterious plus Zara is fairly strong female character.

I enjoyed Twilight more than this one but I still liked it. The ending also makes me think that there will be more in this series although I haven't heard anything about that yet.

message 106: by Ann (new)

Ann | 48 comments Just started The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. I'm only a chapter into it, but the writing style is very unique and I think I'll enjoy it!:)

message 107: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh Gabriel (radicalash) | 2 comments I just finished reading Dark Guardian #1 Moonlight by Rachel Hawthorne, it was pretty good and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I'm sad tho, because as much as I love Twilight, I fear Stephenie Meyer has doomed all following teen romances to be just like it! lol like Melis said about Need, this book reminded me ALOT of Twilight, but I'm glad I stuck with it because it eventually took an interesting twist that deviate from the Twilight cliche and I really enjoyed it!

It's pretty short so if you're looking for a good, quick read I definitely recommend it.

Jim Dale is an exceptional audiobook reader. I think he could read the phone book and make it interesting. I love audiobooks, I usually have one I am listening to in audio format and several others that I am reading. Glad to hear you are enjoying the format.

Right now I am listening to Paper Towns by John Green. It has me hooked.

Kathryn I just started my first Shannon Hale, The Goose Girl--I've heard great things about her work!

I'm also revisiting a long-time favorite author, LM Montgomery, with Jane of Lantern Hill

I'm listening to Jim Dale's narration of Peter and the Starcatchers He IS an amazing narrator! :-)

message 110: by Ann (new)

Ann | 48 comments Melissa, yeah, I kept hearing all these wonderful things about Dale, but I had no idea that he was so incredible! I don't know how he does it, but I'm so pleased he's gotten the great recognition he deserves!!!

Sofistixatedlady | 6 comments Peter Abrahams wrote his first just wrote his first YA books and if you're into mystery and that stuff I would highly recommend them. There's no romance in them though, but he is a great mystery writer!

message 113: by Amy (new)

Amy | 8 comments Hi.. I'm new here.. Glad to find this group.

Right now, I'm re-reading City of Bones and City of Ashes from Mortal Instruments Trilogy by Cassandra Clare. Her last book - City of Glass is coming out in a couple days. I can't wait!!

message 114: by Ann (new)

Ann | 48 comments Hi Amy! Welcome:)

message 115: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (robyn_bravi) Jellico Road, and so far I'm struggling to get into it.

message 116: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments I loved Cassandra Clare's books and can't wait for the third one!

I'm reading Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely now. Really enjoying it.

message 117: by Charise (last edited Mar 19, 2009 11:03PM) (new)

Charise | 1 comments I'm reading "Once Upon a Marigold" by Jean Ferris and I'm almost finished with it. It is an awesome read! It is sprinkled with sensible little tidbits and quirky advice, in the form of sayings, or just them talking common sense. It has vivid characters and a cute plot. Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from it:

She shook her head in disbelief, a faint smile on her lips. "Don't worry?" she repeated.
"Oh I know it looks serious, but what good is worrying? It just gets in the way of thinking."

Sometimes things that seem like good ideas in theory, in practice turn out to be the worst kinds of bone-headed blunders.

"Why should you offer anything but yourself?" she replied a bit tartly. "That's what I'm most interested in. I've already got everything else any sensible person could want. More doesn't mean better. Enough is as good as a feast, you know."

message 118: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I'm not sure this can be counted as a YA book, but I am reading The Thirteenth Tale right now. Next I am reading a Monk book, and then I start LOTR, which I believe should be a YA trilogy. If not, I'm sorry.

I love Wicked Lovely as well. The next book - Ink Exchange is pretty good too. I'm waiting for her 3rd book - Fragile Eternity which is a sequel to Wicked Lovely.

message 120: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments Amy-I haven't read Ink Exchange but after I finish my James Patterson book Fragile Eternity is next on my list to read.

Sofistixatedlady | 6 comments Sara wrote: "I'm reading I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder. It's written in verse..."

I'm so gonna check that one out! I just finished rereading What my mother doesn't know by Sonya Sones which is also a cute book written in verse. The sequel to it is What my Girlfriend Doesn't Know. Those two are some of the funniest books I've ever read

message 122: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I really loved What My Mother/Girlfriend Doesn't Know. They were really great. I Heart You, You Haunt Me was really cute, too!

message 123: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments Rhonda - I really enjoyed Skinned and am glad it is a series and will have another book out later this year. I'm about to pickup Shooting the Moon by Frances O'Roark Dowell.

Ya, I'm reading The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen and she really is an amazing writer!

message 125: by Sofistixatedlady (new)

Sofistixatedlady | 6 comments so I just finished I heart you, you haunt me and it kinda reminds me of the Kissed by an Angel trilogy by Elizabeth Chandler. Those books are good too!

message 126: by Claire (new)

Claire (thebookelf) | 8 comments The Last Apprentice books are just fine for fifth grade and up (even a few 9 year olds would be fine with them) -- the drawings on the cover are the scariest part of the books. Tom is a seventh son of a seventh son who from a sense of duty and destiny takes an apprenticeship with the local 'spook' who exterminates the local witches, boggarts and various evil beings. The books are spooky, literally, that is what the Old Spook and young Tom seek to vanquish- but not horribly scary. I like Tom's commitment and the way he shoulders his grim destiny.

Claire (thebookelf) | 8 comments I am currently reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth, by Carrie Ryan. It seems to be set in an apocalyptic almost stone age future ruled by superstition and strict social rules controlled by the Sisters. Mary, the central character, stands on the threshold of adulthood alone- orphaned and abandoned. Her curiosity is a known danger to the Sisters who watch her carefully as she is positioned to marry Harry, the brother of her true love, Travis. This is as far as I have come in the story. I am as confused as Mary so far....

Jellicoe3 Road eventually comes together. It is worth the struggle :)

message 130: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 1 comments Just finished Graceling. It was quick and fun. Katsa is such a spunky protagonist!

message 131: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments I have the third Cassandra Clare book on my shelf at home from the library and also love Melissa Marr's books - I have the third on hold at the library for when it comes in.

I'm currently working on YA books from an award we have here in IL - Rebecca Caudill Book Award 2010. There's 20 nominees each year and students get to vote on their favorite and then the votes are taken all together and there is one state-wide winner. This year it was The Lightning Thief that won. I'm working on the nominee list for next year - currently reading Shooting the Moon by Frances O'Roark Dowell and really enjoying it.

message 132: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments Tamara-yeah, I got a copy of Fragile Eternity to review so I had to request Wicked Lovely from the library so I would know what was going on :)

Kristen-You have the third Cassandra Clare book already?! So jealous. Our library doesn't even have it in their system yet.

I just finished up Don't Die Dragonfly by Linda Joy Singleton and that was pretty good. I started Circle of Friends Book 2 this morning.

message 133: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments I used to work there, so I email their reference manager and request books to be purchased and then they put me at the top of the hold list. That's how I'm hopefully going to get the third Melissa Marr book right when it comes out too. I also know that they process books with holds faster than others muahahah.

message 134: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments Kristen-LOL. That is awesome!

message 135: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments My fines tend to magically disappear... although I'm more than willing to pay those... hehe. I love having connections.

message 136: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments That's so sad when a library isn't trying to get more books.. I'm sure there's ways even with a small budget. Our library does "tasty" fundraisers - where you eat at local joints on a certain day and then the proceeds go to the library...

message 137: by Debbie (last edited Mar 24, 2009 11:51AM) (new)

Debbie | 31 comments Yeah, that sucks about your library. Someone posted something on my book club about how usage is up like 200% at libraries but hours are being cut because there is no money to fund them.

On another note I'm bummed that this week's Borders coupon is only for teachers so looks like I'm going to have to hold off on buying City of Glass this week. :(

message 138: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments They've been low on coupons lately... it's been bugging my fiance b/c he's dying to buy a new roleplaying book that just came out that they have, but no coupons to cut down that 40 dollar price.

message 139: by A (new)

A (aarrghhh) Not true! Last week every purchase over $5 got a coupon for 40% off an item from Mon-Wed of this week. (I'd have told you, but we're not supposed to really advertise on here, unless the corp has paid for an ad.)

So you might want to check around with friends to see if anyone has an extra coupon laying around that they're not going to use...

message 140: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments Yes, but that is in an in-store coupon.. I don't shop for books that often. I'll bug my friend who works there, but she's not a book-lover. I meant the email coupons have been really just advertisements of their usual sales.. nothing like 30% off a book or such not.

message 141: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments You're kidding! Bummer. Unfortunately I don't have any other friends in the area that like to read or shop at Borders.

message 142: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm having the in-store coupon problem also. I used to shop their all the time, but we've moved, and the closest Borders is 80 miles away... It sucks.

message 143: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments 80 miles! Ugh. That sucks.

message 144: by Amy (new)

Amy | 8 comments I just finished City of Glass..

I love this book and the whole series. I love Cassandra Clare writing. The book has everything love, funny moments, action and suspense. Now I'm looking forward for her next series which will be the story of Shadowhunter in the Victorian era.

Now, I'm reading the Great and Terrible beauty.

message 145: by Sara ♥ (last edited Mar 25, 2009 09:41AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm going up to my folks' house this weekend, so I'll make a trip to Borders on the way up. :)

Are those Cassandra Clare books good? The covers are like...... CHEESE with muscles. Sort of a turn-off for me. But if they're good, I'll read them anyway... (You shouldn't judge a book by its cover anyway, right?)

message 146: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments They're a nice break from vampire ya books.. but still with the fantasy and romance and evilness. :)

message 147: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Oooh... evilness! How did you know?? ;)

message 148: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments Hehe.. books are no fun without evil entities.

message 149: by Amy (new)

Amy | 8 comments OH.. yes. They are good. I think it has everything but not too cheesy teen love. Plus the whole series has this one big question that you have to wait till last book to find out. I think you will love it.

message 150: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments I really enjoyed the first two books in the series and can't wait to get the third. Mostly because I want to find out what happens between Jace and Clary.

I'm reading the second Bluebloods book now, Masquerade.
