Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm completely unfamiliar with the whole battle royale concept, so that doesn't mean a whole lot to me. But with the whole "fighting to the death" thing, I'm not exactly thinking it's going to be a happy book...

I didn't cry! I am a crier, so you probably won't. I don't get the battle royale either. It really isn't a sad or depressing book. The whole basis of the book, two children from each district fight to the death, is depressing. The book is not however

message 203: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) That's just what I wanted to hear! Thanks everyone!

message 204: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Oh, PS - The Sweet Far Thing..... Is it good?

message 205: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 26 comments Been a while since I read it.. but I remember loving the whole series. It is hard to end any series.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 3 comments Crank by Ellen Hopkins

message 207: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I want to read Enna Burning! Where is the library's copy??? (It was either shelved wrong, or it's been stolen...) I hope they find it REALLY REALLY soon, or I'm going to have to buy the books!

message 208: by Peace Love (new)

Peace Love and Reviews (peaceloveandpat) | 5 comments I just finished the Mortal Instruments Trilogy and now I'm reading something similar... Ghostland by Jory Strong. not too sure if it's a YA though...

message 210: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm reading Princess Academy, which I'm loving. The audiobook is fabulous!

I just finished Speak, another good audiobook. It was REALLY powerful.

message 211: by Erika (new)

Erika (readingbutterfly) I just finished "The Darkest Child". It was sad, sad, sad, but quite captivating. "the Doll People" is up next. I am reading it out loud with my eight year old.

message 212: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 3 comments I met Ellen Hopkins this past weekend at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest. I had her sign my copy of Crank and purchased its sequel, Glass, which she also signed. I, also, purchased and had signed her latest book, Identical. I loved Crank and look forward to reading Glass, too.

Ally | 3 comments I just finished A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I liked both of them for very different reasons. Thirteen sort of reminded me of Perks of Being a Wallflower for some reason,

I'm starting on the "His Dark Materials" series. I just opened up Book 1. We'll see how it goes.

I've read the first two books in the Dark Materials series. The Golden Compass was okay - but I only managed to suffer through the second book. I only finished it on principle of not wanted to leave a book half read - plus I kept thinking that it would get better. It didn't. But who knows, everyone has different reading tastes. Good luck with it.

I can't wait to read this book. But somehow it keeps getting pushed back on my reading list.

message 217: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 3 comments I've recently read and enjoyed The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, Rules by Cynthia Lord, and Wake by Lisa McMann.

That is how the Golden Compass is going so far. It's got some fairly interesting parts. But I'm finding that I'm forcing myself to open the book.

kurn | 5 comments I don't really like Golden Compass, welll I never read it but I;m not interested in reading it. I like the Mortal Instruments trilogy, the Heir trilogy, and more. Any recommendations?

Chas | 23 comments Karenn wrote: "I don't really like Golden Compass, welll I never read it but I;m not interested in reading it. I like the Mortal Instruments trilogy, the Heir trilogy, and more. Any recommendations?"

I'm always baffled by statements like this. The words "don't really like" and "never read" should never appear in the same sentence.

The Golden Compass was my favorite novel, in any genre, for any age group, for nearly a decade. I've seldom read anything as beautifully written. This opinion is shared by many thoughtful readers. Why would a fan of well-written YA books NOT be interested in reading it?

Chas | 23 comments Sara wrote: "I'm reading Princess Academy, which I'm loving. The audiobook is fabulous!

Are you equating listening to an audiobook with reading, or are you saying that you've listened to it and read it, both?

message 222: by Sara ♥ (last edited Aug 03, 2009 09:44AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I definitely equate listening to an audiobook with reading. Exact same content, takes longer, but I can clean or drive while I "read." On both of those... I've only listened to them. And I saw the movie adaptation of Speak after I "read" it. (It almost sounds like you have an issue with audiobooks, but since they're so fabulous... that can't be it, can it?)

I just read Wicked Lovely, which I thought was wonderful, and Book of a Thousand Days, which was also quite fabulous. I'm next in line for The Hunger Games, which I'm pretty excited about. I also have City of Bones out from the library, which I will read as soon as I finish Fighting Ruben Wolfe and its sequel Getting the Girl, both of which are pretty short.

EDIT: I need to read The Golden Compass. My husband and I are driving to Las Vegas this week (22 hour drive).... I think I'll get the audiobook.... I think the version at my library is done by a full cast of voice actors...

Katrina (katrina23) | 1 comments Just to add my 2 cents, I didn't really like The Golden Compass either. I read it once in college for a YA fic class, and didn't really like it then. Then I gave it a second try when the movie was being released and again, it just fell flat for me. I did really enjoy City of Bones, though, and plan on reading the other books in the series.

message 224: by kurn (new)

kurn | 5 comments Yes! I totally agree. I love the Mortal Instruments. Read the Heir Trilogy.

Ooh, cool! PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS is the next book on my to-read list. As soon as I finish the book I am currently reading I will dive into Prophecy. I hear great things about.

message 229: by Dialma (new)

Dialma | 14 comments Debbie and Daisy I think you will really enjoy reading the Prophecy. So far I have one friend that has read it and she also liked it a lot. Debbie - I'm enjoying City of Bones so far. And I'm so jealous you already got to read Catching Fire. I cannot wait to read that one.

message 231: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm really liking City of Bones so far, as well! I'm on chapter 14 (about halfway)...

message 232: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments I just finished How It Ends by Laura Wiess and Demon Princess by Michelle Rowan. I enjoyed both although Demon Princess was pretty predictable.

Daisy-I enjoyed Shiver and though Something, Maybe was just ok.

message 235: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 31 comments Daisy-no that was my first book by her. I kept hearing how good they were. After I read Something, Maybe someone told me her other books are better.

Jennifer (bookcrazyjenn) | 3 comments Right now I am reading Fade To Black - I just finished Uninvited by Justine Musk, a great read! :)

message 242: by Erin (new)

Erin (erin-b) I discovered a whole new selection of free e-audio books at the library, so I am rereading, or listening to actually, The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. It's one of my favorites.

message 243: by Mary (new)

Mary (goodreadscommary_edwards) Silas House most recent book, Eli the Good is listed as YA. I didn't even know it was listed as such until I'd finished it and really wouldn't have known. Silas is one of the best writers today and I'm trying to let more folks know about him. At the book discussion for Eli the Good lastnight several felt it should be required reading for high-schoolers. Wonderful book-0you won't be disappointed.

message 244: by Kay (last edited Nov 29, 2009 02:07PM) (new)

Kay Cassidy (kaycassidy) I'm reading an ARC of Chelsea M. Campbell's THE RISE OF RENEGADE X coming out in May 2010. We share the same agent (and the same publisher, actually) and I've been wanting to read this ever since her deal was first announced in the trades. A totally fresh take on superheroes (and supervillains) with a boy protagonist. I haven't read many boy protags this year, so it's a refreshing change. (And I'm loving Damien's dark wit.)Chelsea CampbellThe Rise of Renegade X

Leana (craftychick) | 55 comments I am reading a few different things at the same time right now. But Young Adult specific, the 2nd Morganville Vampire book. Im not loving it so far, but it is ok.

message 246: by Toni (new)

Toni | 27 comments I just finished Wintergirls by Laurie Anderson. Really good YA book. Hard to put down.

message 247: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Hello :) I was hoping there was a group for adults who love YA books! I am currently reading Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins - I love it.

message 248: by Leana (new)

Leana (craftychick) | 55 comments I put #2 Morganville Vamps on hold to read my group book, The Naming by Alison Croggon. I am liking it so far, but I am only about 50 pages in, so I have high hopes for loving it. I have heard really good things about it :D.

Heidi - I am curious to see what you think about Catching Fire! I still need to read Hunger Games. But I have heard nothing but good things about both books!
