Leana (craftychick) | 55 comments Lisa, I haven't heard of this book. Checking out right now if I can get it as an ebook :D. It sounds like it is pretty funny. Thanks for mentioning it.

message 352: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellezink) | 168 comments Leanna's right - Tithe is significantly edgier than a lot of the YA out there. But if you don't mind that rawness, I think you'll love it. Holly is the ultimate urban fantasy writer, in my opinion (along with Cassandra Clare). Her worlds are so meticulously set that you just can't help falling into the gritty darkness that is her trademark. I ADORE her work! Let us know if you like Tithe (I love Valiant as well).

Mira | 23 comments I really have been into reading yp fiction lately. It all started with twilight but now I have read some great series I would recommend House of Night, Twlight, Mortal Insturments series, Evermore series, morganville vampires, sookie stackhouse, loved shiver, wicked lovely series, blue bloods, need series and so many more,

I just bought fallen, hush hush, graceling and fire, and a few more wanted to buy the other books that maggie s wrote from having written shiver but was unsure.

Right now I am reading Seven rays by Jessica Bendinger I say that this all reasearch for my thesis that I am doing on yp fiction and communication. very excited about it

I have it on my kindle. I've read the sequel "Goddess Boot Camp" I did that one in two days. I have Shiver, Ballad and Lament on my to read list. Maybe I'll have to add Tithe.

Leana (craftychick) | 55 comments Mira wrote: "I really have been into reading yp fiction lately. It all started with twilight but now I have read some great series I would recommend House of Night, Twlight, Mortal Insturments series, Evermore ..."

For sure Mira! Maggie is an awesome author. I read Shiver and loved it so I wanted to read her next stuff. I read Lament and loved it even more!!!!! And Ballad was still excellant! She has become my new favorite author. I can't wait for Linger to come out this summer, the followup to Shiver!

I love YA too since Twilight. I can't believe how many good books there are in the YA world. I have read :

House Of Night (except the last one so far)
Mortal Instruments
Only the 1st Morganville Vampire book so far
Wicked Lovely (haven't read the one from last year) Blue Bloods
Beautiful Creatures
Wondrous Strange (reading it right now, 2nd book is out but haven't read it yet)

Here is what I still have to read (I own but haven't read yet - too many!):

Graceling
Evermore
Need
#5 Vampire Diaries
Hungar Games
Hush, Hush
Fallen
Wings (next read after Wondrous Strange)
The rest of the Tithe series

Plus I have several adult Paranormal Romances (Undead series that I love by Mary Janice Davidson and a bunch others!)

Lots of reading this year to do without even buying any new books! But I think I should be able to get through them :D

Lisa - I have a Nook, so I checked B&N and they did have it! So I bought it! As you can see from my list above, it may be a little while until I get to it, but I plan on probably pushing some other stuff back to read it sooner than later :D

Hunger games is awesome. The series has a really good mix of adventure, romance and the super natural. I think I am going to have to add ballad, lament, and wonderous strange to my reading list.

message 357: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (Bookworm Lisa) (letsread) | 22 comments Hunger Games is wonderful as well as the sequel Catching Fire. It is just as good as the first. Mortal instruments is also one of my favorites. Leana, I also own many of the books that you mentioned that you haven't read yet. I need to read many of them as well. I have all of the blue bloods, but have only read the first.

There are so many great young adult books out there, it's hard to keep up.

message 358: by Jill (new)

Jill | 68 comments I just finished Hush, Hush. I read the whole thing today while home from work. It was great. I think I will go with Hunger Games next...

Ever by Gail Carson Levine

Amanda Orlich Ahern (kittymeowxcore) | 56 comments Fallen was good. Some people complain that there wasn't a lot of character development, but I still really liked it.

I think with me, if there is any lacking in a story as far as characters go, I tend to develop them more in my imagination. I can see how people would have problems with some of the characters, but with how I saw the story in my head, I had no problems.

I am looking forward to reading Hungar Games. I picked it up last year but couldn't get into it to much. I am so reading add and couldn't get past the present tense writing style. But I have heard way too many good things about it - and the next one - to never read them :D.

I think Fallen will be what I read next. I have heard good and bad things about it too. But I am in love with the cover already! So I am determined that the book is excelent :D.

I so judge books by the cover despite the fact that we are taught not to in life! In books, I totally pick new ones for the covers. Love love love good covers!

message 362: by Traci (new)

Traci So I just finished Wake and Fade by Lisa McMann and I thought they were really good! I was skeptical at first but I really got into them.

Now I know I'm behind the ball on this one, but I just started The Book Thief and I'm only about 20 pages in but it's so good so far. I have a very good feeling about this one.

message 363: by Jill (new)

Jill | 68 comments Lisa- Thanks for the suggestion. It will go on the list.

Traci- I loved the Book Thief. It is amazing and very emotional. Enjoy!

Leana (craftychick) | 55 comments It's not YA but I started Soulless today. I am only 30 pages in and it's already laugh out loud. Some of it has gotten over my head just a bit because I haven't read a book from England for a bit. But, like I said, pretty funny already!

message 368: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Orlich Ahern (kittymeowxcore) | 56 comments Just started Vampire Academy (finally). I'm really liking it!!

Jill | 68 comments Just finished Hunger Games and it was amazing! I ran out today and bought Catching Fire...along with six other suggestion books from you guys! I am so book obsessed.
I just found out a graphic novel version of Twilight will be released on March 16th. It looks like it might be a lot of fun. I sure wish Stephenie Meyer would hurry up and give us a new novel!

message 371: by Nenny (new)

Nenny (nennyseptiana) | 2 comments Magic or Madness. I'm reading it right now, and enjoy it. It brings fresh kind of story. Still about magic, but what always make me back to my reading is that the style of writing is so teenager (fit with the main character's age, which is 15 years old).

Other thing is that it fitly combined style of speaking between American and Australian. Not many books I can find that come from Australia, especially interesting fiction like this. So this is good finding.

message 372: by Traci (new)

Traci I finally finished The Book Thief! Wow, that was a strong read. I really really enjoyed it though! I really loved who was picked to be the narrator and I loved that it made me so emotional every time I picked it up. Excellent novel.

In anticipation of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, I'm beginning Lewis Carrol's classic tomorrow, and then The Looking Glass Wars. I'm pretty excited for both!

I loved The Book Thief! Emotional, but a great read! I just finished reading Seeing Redd, the second book of the Looking Glass Wars and I'm loving the series so far! Hope you like both Carrol and Beddor. I cannot wait to go see Burton's movie, I think it's going to be a great one!!!

message 377: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished Lament by Maggie Stiefvater and am now reading the sequel, Ballad. Really liked the first one and the second one is good too.

message 378: by Annie (new)

Annie Oosterwyk I just finished reading Erak's Ransom, the most recent book in the Ranger's Apprentice series. It is book seven, and I will be reading anything else written by John Flanagan. He combines adventure and romance with strong female characters, although his rangers are the focus. I recommend these for anyone who liked Fire and Graceling.
Other good books I finished this week: Wild Things by Clay Carmichael and Starclimber by Kenneth Oppel. Is there anything better than YA lit?

message 379: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Finally going to start Beautiful Creatures.

message 380: by Nenny (new)

Nenny (nennyseptiana) | 2 comments I am just finishing Magic and Madness. Good story, fresh idea, though I was a little bit confusie with sudden switch of character's point of view in each chapter.

message 381: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (Bookworm Lisa) (letsread) | 22 comments I am reading "Kiki Strike" by Kirsten Miller. I'm about a third of the way through. It has been pretty entertaining so far. My 12 year old said that it was one of those "you have to read it mom" books.

I love the Rangers Apprentice books. I have read the eigth, "The Kings of Clonmel", only because I was crazy enough to order if from Australia. I will wait for the final book that should come out this summer, that way I won't have to pay international shipping. lol

I haven't read Soulless but I love the cover!

message 385: by Christina (new)

Christina (fiddler42) Soulless is a fun read--so far I've encountered vampires, werewolves, a dirigible, "opticals" (specialized goggles), parasols, tea-in-the-library, numerous mentions of Queen Victoria, and so much more!

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 36 comments I stumbled on Raising the Griffin at the library yesterday when I was looking for something else. It's an interesting twist on finding out that you're the long-lost heir to a throne. The main character (Alex) grew up in England knowing that his family used to rule Rovenia before the Soviets seized control of the country. However, after the Soviet Union's breakup, the Rovenians have voted to become a constitutional monarchy, and invited Alex's father to become the king.

message 387: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Ballad last week. It was a good book but I didn't like it as much as Shiver and Lament, even though I really liked the characters.

I'm reading Hush, Hush now. It's good too. Trying to figure out what the deal is with Patch. Hmmmm...

And I'm thinking Tithe will be next.

Stick with the Book Thief. It's great.

message 389: by Mrs. Lapacka (new)

Mrs. Lapacka (hlapacka) I'm reading Gone, by Michael Grant. In an instant, all adults disappear from a small town, leaving everyone under the age of 15 to fend for themselves. It's interesting, and I think my students will like it, but Grant's characters acknowledge the possibility of little children left alone in houses and then don't do anything. As a mom of two young children, I'm having a hard time with the ideas of babies alone in their cribs...It's funny how our stage in life affects what parts of a book linger.

message 391: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Ok just finished Beautiful Creatures. Sorry to all you lovers on here, but it was not my thing. After that I started City of Bones and gave up after 100 pages because the writing/editing was HORRIBLE. Anyway - now I am going to try When You Reach Me. I hope the third time (book) is the charm.

message 392: by Jill (new)

Jill | 68 comments I loved City of Bones. I spent most of yesterday reading it until I was done. I am starting City of Ashes and waiting for City of Glass to be released in paperback...

I would love to know some good news spots to keep track of what is up and coming...any suggestions?

message 393: by Mrs. Lapacka (new)

Mrs. Lapacka (hlapacka) Teenreads.com is a good source. I've also just discovered book trailers. Go to Youtube and type in 'book trailers YA'. Personally, I like an hour or two browsing through the bookstore with a coffee:) It took me a long time to get into City of Bones. I ended up getting into it by the end, so I checked the two sequels out from the Library but I keep picking up other things instead. I've almost finished Gone. It;s like a train wreck that I can't look away from. Very disturbing in parts, but interesting and readable all the same.

Thanks for the update on Gone Heather. Jill - I think City of Bones was one that people either loved or hated (per the reviews) - I guess you were in the loved category :)

I really liked Beautiful Creatures and have City of Bones on my TBR list. Have you read Shiver? What do you think of Lament so far?
