Jeshu (jeshusauria) Tara, maybe you can try drinking milk with honey? I always drink that when I need to have reaally good night of sleep. Maybe you can try doing some relaxation exercises before going to bed :)

Tara, I wouldn't worry about it so much. I think you're just being a normal teenager. Teenagers have a different rhythm to adults. And honestly 1:30 isn't that late. My teenage brother tends to go to bed between 2 and 4am then he gets up late, my other brother and I used to do the same thing. We've both hit adulthood now, though, and our rhythms have changed. I tend to go to bed between 10 and 11 then get up between 7 and 8:30; he tends to go to bed between 10 and midnight and gets up "some time before 11am." As you can see, different people have very different rhythms and teens need more sleep than non-teens.

What do you do before you go to bed? Play a game? Sit before the PC? Watch TV? All these are very bad because they stimulate your brain by all the flickering images that accost your eyes. You need to do something that doesn't include electronics and your eyes. Personally, I read for 30 - 60 minutes (you have to be very strict with this though and make yourself stop when the time has come to stop.) You might prefer to write or draw or listen to some music. I did go through a music phase. I got my CD player out and put a CD on repeat. Eventually that CD was all I needed to get me to go to sleep.

Do you exercise during the day? I find I sleep a lot better at night if I've done 1 - 2 hours of exercise during the day.

As Jeshu said, you might like a specific drink. If not milk and honey, then maybe a glass of chocolate milk or a cup of hot chocolate. Make it something that you only drink before bed, though, not something you drink throughout the day and after a bit your body will come to associate it with sleep.

You can condition your body. You just need to work at conditioning it.

Char (CharmaineElaine) Because I'm having major trouble getting into Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith I've decided to read Across the Universe by Beth Revis alongside it. I'm going to aim to read 50 pages a day of P&P&Z and then whatever's left I'm going to read ATU.

message 556: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) but milk and honey tastes so good! :(

@ Char - I really liked Across the Universe, it was quite a quick, addictive read as I recall so hopefully you'll enjoy it more than the zombies. :)

I finished Falling Hard by J.K. Coi and unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on which way you look at it) it hasn't altered my prejudice about books with half-naked dudes on the front.

I'm trying to be disciplined so I'm picking up The Madness of a Seduced Woman (Plume) by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer and trying it again. I got about a 6th of the way through before and lost interest...

@Tara - definitely try a routine. I like a nice bath (where I read a few chapters of a book) and a hot drink. Rea's right, best not to over-stimulate your brain with too much TV etc. I tend to go to sleep between 12-1 and get up at 7-8 but I'm a light sleeper so I often wake up in the night (especially when the cat jumps on the bed!). Everyone's different.

It's really interesting so far. I'm on page 67. I think I'm going to be able to read for another half an hour tonight and then I'm going to watch TV with my brother. It's Top Gear night! XD

Ooooh I love the movie version of that one (with Tim Curry as Pennywise the clown.) It's the one King book I'm really motivated to read, even if it is over 1000 pages long! Maybe for Halloween group book read? :P

What Emma said plus I'm not sure I can read a 1000 page book at this point in my life. I don't have the concentration for it.

Ah you wusses :p I'm ok with clowns, but zombie cats and walking headless corpses not so much. With my 1k+ books I have to tackle it with the mindset that I'm pretty much reading 3 books in one go and that helps, but I know why they're daunting to even start and understand your reluctance to take them on.

Still, you should watch the movie. It's long and the "monster" at the end is not nearly so scary as the clown it manifests itself as, but I really like it. I've heard some people are upset by the book because it portrays 11 year olds having sex (they're "forced" to do so, but I don't know what supposedly forces them.)

message 567: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Lol... Zombie cats? Headless corpses? What have you been reading? Fair enough but I like to read one at once, the fact that I'm reading two right now is a rarity.

I can't watch long movies... I barely managed Cars and I loved that movie. 11 year olds having sex??? Jeesh! o.O

Char (CharmaineElaine) I just read the first page I can see why you put it down, it's a heavy opening. It places you right into the story.

I really enjoyed Sabriel. I don't really remember how it starts. There's a prologue that shows Sabriel being born then her dad, the Abhorsen, has to go and fetch her from the river of the dead before she can fall beyond the first wall, right? I like stories that throw you right in then take the time to explain it all bit by bit as you go on. I don't like stories that explain everything first and only then get to any form of plot and I don't like stories that throw you in and never bother to explain. Garth Nix is one of my top YA authors, though, after the Abhorsen trilogy and the Keys to the Kingdom series (septology? I may have made that word up :P but it sounds pretty cool!)

Also, I've discovered that apparently the bf has It so I just need to find the book when we're back in Holland.

And I'm still trudging through A Game of Thrones. I've finished the series now but every time I sit down to read I only manage a couple of pages before someone comes and requires me to go and do something for the rest of the day. :( At this rate I'll never finish it!

I finished, I liked it, and yes, I feel embarrassed XD I didn't feel inspired for the review, so I put only a "It was okay" (I was sleepy).
Now I'm reading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Jeshu (jeshusauria) It's a very good book. Despite the lenght, I devoured when I read it some years ago. It has a couple of chapters that are a bit boring, but everything else is just ASFASFAJDD AWESOME.

message 583: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Haha, I think it's one of the few books that I don't own. (There are books I don't own! Who knew!?) I really want to read it. =D

My to-read list is too long, I have about 20 hard copies to get to (all sitting neatly on a shelf) and about a hundred more on my kindle (I'm trying to decided whether the whole anything-published-before-1923-is-free-in-kindle-store is a blessing or a curse). Oh, and of course, new books are added to the list everyday - thank you, GR...
