I've heard enough about it to know that it's one of those ones that I'm not going to be interested in.

message 302: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Aaah. I have it on my pile which is why I added it to the poll =D.

Apparently it's Twilight-esque purple prose bad but with werewolves instead of vampires. No thanks. Twilight-esque purple prose bad was bad enough once (or rather four times). I don't need to put myself through that again!

message 304: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Oh God. What have I let myself in for? I guess I'll find out for myself either way though.

message 305: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Okay, so whilst I'm here I thought I'd add what I'm reading... I always seem to forget to do that lol. So anyway, I'm currently reading Doctor Who The Art of War (The Darksmith Legacy Book 9) by Mike Tucker

I've nearly finished the series now. Soon I will be reading grown up books lol =P

message 306: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Hence why I'm not letting myself in for it. :p Shiver, Fallen, Hush Hush, Halo... not gonna read any of them. Ever.

Haha, this one and one more book?

I'm reading Dora Bruder by Patrick Modiano and The Gathering (Darkness Rising, #1) by Kelley Armstrong

message 307: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Haha, it's a good plan. I wish I'd have thought of it. I'm a sucker for punishment lol.

Yes, book 9 and book 10. I've enjoyed the series. =) I'm glad I needed a light read after Frankenstein. =D

Oooh, Kelley Armstrong is the author of the grown up book I'm going to read. XD

I've been very wary around YA since I realised it's being taken over by people who think paranormal romance and codendancy are good things. I tend to read the bad reviews for YA titles and then decide whether the points brought up are enough to put me off reading the book.

I can bet. Funnily enough my brother's just started reading it as well! He reads some weird stuff, though, him.

What a coincidence! This book is actually pretty good. But I get the impression that it's only going to be the "start" of a longer story, book 2 will be "middle" and 3 "end". I usually prefer my trilogies to be three separate story arcs entwined with one larger one. It's going so slow that that's never going to be the case here. Plus it wasn't in The Summoning & co.

message 309: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I always read a mixture of positive and negative. If I think either one isn't portrayed in a sensible way then I try to avoid it.

Haha! Oooh... how weird lol

It is a coincidence! Yeah, I hate it when trilogies are like that, it's why I like the Numbers trilogy so much. It's three stories all arced into one.

I tend to read 1 / 2 star reviews and 3/4. I don't trust 5 star reviews because whoever is gushing is usually gushing too much. That, or I'll do the "compare books" thing with the reviewer to see if our tastes are at all similar. If they gave all of SMeyer's books, TVD, Graceling, etc, 5 star glowing reviews, I know not to trust their review of this book either.

Apparently he found "two words he didn't know!" I'm surprised he doesn't find more words that he doesn't know when reading.

Same, that's why I liked Wind on Fire so much. But Armstrong's writing is easy to slip into so there's that.

message 311: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I know what you mean, I have a hard time writing an objective 5 star reviews, I'm the first to admit it. I like writing 3 star reviews the best. I know a book hasn't achieved what it should when I can't write a review about it.

Haha. Siblings! *tuts* =P

Wind on Fire? That sounds familiar. I know, I like Armstrong's writing.

message 312: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
So do I. If I really enjoyed it, it's usually because it was the right thing for me and I can't really explain why it was so right thing for me. I can't give others objective reasons to like it, the book just happened to be that right mix of this, that and the other that appeals to me the most.

I know! At least we'll be able to talk about it when we're both done. He reads a lot of philosophy stuff so it's not often we both read the same books these days.

It's a trilogy by William Nicholson. I read it as a young teen. I really enjoyed it at that age but I haven't read it in many years now.

message 313: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Someone gets it! People don't tend to get why it's hard to write a five star review.

True, see what my genius of adding Frankenstein to the group read has done? =P

I think I've heard of it, or something similar.

message 314: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I'm now reading The End of Time The Darksmith Legacy Bk. 10 ("Doctor Who") by Justin Richards It's the final one! XD

message 315: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Yup! That's why I tend to rely on reviewers who don't write nearly as many 5 star reviews as they do 3 or 4. I try to reserve 5 stars for the books that really, really blew me away.

We bow to your obvious superior wisdom!

I thought it was extremely good when I was a teen. It starts with The Wind Singer (Wind on Fire trilogy, #1) by William Nicholson

message 316: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) That'll be reviewers like me... except I put my reviews on my blog and link to them, it saves time and promotes my blog.

*graciously accepts your comments* =P

I have that trilogy somewhere! That's why it's familiar! (I evidently have more books than I know what to do with).

I managed to follow your blog! Haven't managed Tara's yet. It's playing silly buggers and pretends she has no followers. Le sigh.

Lol, one of the ones you bought and never read or read, put away and never thought of again?

message 318: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Yay! You're following my blog! Aww. poor Tara. Stupid Blogspot.

Lol it's one that I've bought and not read. I will though! It mat take a while though.

Yah, it doesn't agree with the Netherlands. Doesn't even remember that I've set it to be in English and keeps changing back to Dutch. Another le sigh.

My mum and I both enjoyed it. The male twin in that is the first literary character I had a crush on after William Brown!

message 320: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilyblake) I am currently reading The Summoning, by Kelley Armstrong. I think it's really good. I was caught up in it on the first page.

message 321: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I enjoyed The Summoning. I thought the third book, The Reckoning, was the best in that series.

Will you be reading The Gathering, too? It's also good but as only book 1 is out right now the story is really incomplete. You don't even really know what "species" of paranormal being the important characters are.

message 322: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Emily wrote: "I am currently reading The Summoning, by Kelley Armstrong. I think it's really good. I was caught up in it on the first page."

The Summoning is on my to read list. I'm not going to read it until I have the whole trilogy. Let me know what you thought of it once you've finished. =D

message 324: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I've finished the Darksmith Legacy! Yay! I'm now reading Dime Store Magic (Women of the Otherworld, #3) by Kelley Armstrong Woo!

message 325: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Is Women of the Otherworld about the St Clouds too?

I think I read that her adult and YA books are all interconnected because of these St Clouds. If so, I suppose I should read her adult ones to get the full story!

message 326: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I don't think I've heard of the St Clouds... but I'm only on book 3 and characters are still being introduced. I'll let you know.

If that's true, then I'm going to have to read her YA books lol for the same reason!

Sounds good! After my exams I'm gonna look into getting my hands on Bitten. Dom, my furry friend, will be happy! :p

message 328: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Lol. Do, it's a really good book.

message 329: by louise (new)

louise (monstrumology) I finished Bright Young Things and I'm now back to reading Dracula.

I'm determined to finish it!

message 330: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Haha, I'm going to read Dracula... eventually lol. What was Bright Young Things like?

message 331: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I think my dad has Dracula as an audiobook so I'm going to see if I can find that this summer!

Is there anything in particular that makes it so hard to read, Louise? Or just the dated style?

message 332: by louise (new)

louise (monstrumology) I enjoyed Bright Young Things, although I was a little disappointed by the ending.

It's not really all that difficult, I can understand the Victorian language, it's just a little bit tedious to get through sometimes.

message 333: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
How do you feel about the author? I've forgotten the name. What's her writing style like? Better than most YA authors or kinda on par? I heard the characters are quite shallow, did you feel that way or did you like them?

Sorry, bombarding you with questions. :p

Ah yes, I'm getting that tediousness with Frankenstein. I can't concentrate on it for more than a couple of chapters at a time.

message 334: by louise (new)

louise (monstrumology) I don't think I have enough reading experience with her to make a proper judgement, since it was the first book by her that I've read, but I quite liked her writing style. It was easy to understand and there were quite a few descriptions that I liked. Although, she constantly used the same one to describe a feature of one character's face, which started to get on my nerves a little bit. Some of the characters were a bit shallow, which I didn't really mind, but there are a couple of characters that I could sympathise with.

I'm tending to only read one chapter of Dracula a night since they're quite long and sometimes switch from narratives and points of view.

message 335: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I know what you mean with Dracula, I had similar issues with Frankenstein and I'm getting ready to read Wuthering Heights. I'm going to read Dracula at some point though.

message 336: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Have you read Jane Austen? It's funny because I adored Jane Austen. I gobbled it all up, no matter the length of the chapters, but Frankenstein is really draining me!

I'll add that author to my potentials list then. :) She's one that I see at the shop quite a lot but I've avoided her up till now.

message 337: by louise (new)

louise (monstrumology) I've been issued a warning about Wuthering Heights from my mother. According to her, it's incredibly hard to read, since Heathcliff speaks in an old Yorkshire dialect. I have a feeling that when I read it, the Kate Bush song will be continually playing in my head XD

message 338: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Lol Louise and to accompany that, I'll have Noel Fielding dressed up as Kate Bush dancing to it playing in my head. Wuthering Heights is going to be tough.

message 339: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Oh, I am so glad I speak Yorkshire! Not that this means it'll be easy but at least I should have an easier time with it.

I will also get Noel Fielding. Though I don't like that song.

message 340: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I don't either but he was pretty good. He did for Wuthering Heights what Rufus Hound did for Fight For This Love.

I missed Rufus Hound, I had to go watch it. It is good!

message 342: by Char (new)

I bought Full Dark, No Stars for the bf for Christmas but he hasn't touched it. :( Is it horror like Rage of Pet Sematary, Anne? Or a bit lighter than those?

I just finished Wolves Among Us: A Novel. It was good but there were too many things where I was just supposed to accept that God intervened.

Time to finish reading about those dirty, dark-skinned, buck-toothed, monstrous Muslim pagans who worship Mohammed and Apollo. The hero, Roland, beats Boromir's death scene in The Lord of the Rings. Boromir gets about 5 minutes. Roland manages to spend about 100 pages dying. Sigh. I can't wait for him to actually die!

message 346: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6 comments lol sorry to hear about your current book. But this is my first Stephen King novel I have ever read but I have seen a few movies and I would have to say this one seems milder then the movies I have seen of his. It can get a bit graphic in some discriptions of things but I found it to make me want to read more to find out what happens. I think once your bf starts reading it he may just get hook into it like I have.

message 347: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Haha, it was written for people to learn by heart and tell at courts and such so there's an awful lot of repetition.

The bf's not a big reader. He does well if he manages one book a year! But he does rather like Stephen King. I might try reading it but I've had bad experiences with King in the past, which is more due to me treating it as bedtime reading matter when it really isn't.

message 348: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I'm reading Industrial Magic (Women of the Otherworld, #4) by Kelley Armstrong and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

lol sounds like my boyfriend, he always sees books that interest him but never gets around to reading it. Iagree that this book realy isn't bedtime story material but I do think that this could be a more mild book in the scary department. But I haven't read any other of his books so I am not too sure.
