Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments Ah-ha! I didn't get any of that from the reviews (although admittedly I was reading them with one eye shut to keep from reading possible spoilers ;o)). From Lahni and Karen's descriptions, it sounds like this book would fit perfectly. Thanks! Off to put it on my TBR list, too......

Yes they do.

Unfortunately, this one won't work for this task. Flowers for Algernon involves science, but Charlie isn't a scientist.

But if you're looking for somewhere to put this book (and it's a good one), it's written through a series of progress reports (so it's an epistolary novel) so it would fit 15.8.

One of the reviews calls Dr. Pellinore an eccentric scientist, so yes, it will work. Sounds creepy! ;o)

That works. One of my all-time favorite books, too. Hope you enjoy it!

Vicky (librovert) | 240 comments Would Prelude to Foundation work for this task? The main character, Hari Seldon, is a mathematician who develops the fictional science of psychohistory. I wasn't sure if it would count, because it is a fictional science, but I'm trying to fit as many of the Foundation books into my reading list as I can. :)

Carrie (goodreadscomkeridwynn) | 185 comments If it's been asked already and I missed it, my apologies.

I was wondering if The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks would work for this, or is it too much of a non-fiction science story in general. I'm sure I can find another place to fit this book if it doesn't fit here. Thanks :)

Sorry, Keri, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is completely nonfiction so it won't work for this task. It is, however, an excellent book so do try to fit it in if you can.

message 66: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (goodreadscomkeridwynn) | 185 comments I'm sure I can find another place :) Better to double check ahead of time. I really do want to read this book. I have read very good reviews of it. And being in the medical field, it makes it of more interest to me. Thanks!

A medical examiner works as do all of the Temperance Brennan books. So, your choice!

Desirée (desirel) | 21 comments How about "The Physician" by Noah Gordon? The protagonist is a doctor - but it's a historical novel, so his methods are not as scientific as today. From what I read about it though, his main quest seems to be to enhance his knowledge and learn new methods.

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments Forensics expert work -- Patterson's and Mistress of the Art of Death (which I really, really want to read, too).

Neurosurgeons will work, too.

Alex Cross is a forensic psychologist. The first book in the series is
Along Came a Spider. His women's murder club books also feature a medical examiner. The first one in that series is 1st to Die.

To Sin With A Scoundrel - the heroine is a student of chemistry and sciences
My Darling Caroline - genius heroine who's a botanist
Nobody's Baby But Mine - genius physicist heroine (I'm sure this one works!)

do archeologists or historians work? If so, Kill For Me (book #9) or Spell of the Highlander might work:-)

Romances work and so do archeologists. Historians won't work though. So most of those you've listed will work. The only one I couldn't say for sure is Kill For Me (book #9). I know Sophie in Die For Me (book #7) is an archeologist (and that's the book I'm up to so far), but I couldn't find a mention of Susannah's job.

Isabell (purzel) | 246 comments Would Darkover Landfall by Marion Zimmer Bradley work for this task?

In this book a spaceship crashes on an unknown planet and the people have to find out more about their new environment. The perspective shifts between the characters. If I had to point out a main character I'd probably say that it's the geologist. There is also a botanist, a zoologist, a bacteriologist, several doctors, engineers and others. My impression of the book was that its focus was on science and how people managed if they had to deal without it.

Eve Duncan works. She uses a lot of scientific principles in her work. I haven't started it yet, but I've heard it's a really good series.

Amanda (amandapearl) | 267 comments This might be a little out there, but would An Abundance of Katherines work? The plot is about a child prodigy who is trying to find an algorithm to figure out his chances of dating and/or being dumped by girls. The book is set up like a math text book and has footnotes and figures of various equations and graphs.

The main character isn't a paid scientist with a degree or anything, but his entire world revolves around math and using math to study and understand everything in his life.

Sidenote: I've talked to a few friends who have read this and they say there is a LOT of math and it's hard to understand, but I studied engineering in college so I'm up for the challenge! Bring on the vector calculus!
