Just wondering if anyone wants to give it another try? Pick a book and read it as a group?

whimsicalmeerkat I would like to do this again.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Any book in particular?

whimsicalmeerkat I hadn't thought that far, actually. You have any thoughts on it?

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Nothing concrete, really. Wouldn't mind something a bit more outside my normal comfort zone, though.

Which is to say, outside the usual suspects when it comes to SciFi and Fantasy.

message 6: by Sara (new)

Sara (inkandpavement) | 19 comments I was just thinking the same thing. Perhaps we should have another voting round...

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Should probably get some nominations first. Doesn't seem to be many of us, so we can keep it simple and just ask for book nominations?

whimsicalmeerkat Do we want to do fiction or non-fiction or one of each or something? I'm working on some ideas.

Vlad | 43 comments Wouldn't mind something a bit more outside my normal comfort zone

Yep.
Something from this list, perhaps?

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

That list looks promising.

What do the rest of you think?

message 11: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I intend to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, All the Devils Are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis, Solar and The Mind's Eye so I would be up for any of those. White Egrets is on my list too, but poetry seems far from ideal for our purposes.

I know nothing about The Lost Books of The Odyssey: A Novel, but it seems like it could be interesting. The same applies to How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe.

I also have The Corrections on my list and of course Freedom has gotten a lot of attention lately.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I've already read How to Live Safely... and I didn't really care for it.

I'm up for any of the others, though.

How about you pick two and then we'll add in anyone elses suggestions then vote from there?

message 13: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks because I've read a fair amount about it and read/heard some very coherent interviews with the author

- The Lost Books of The Odyssey: A Novel because sometimes it's interesting to read something about which one knows little to nothing

That gives us both a fiction and non-fiction option.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Anyone else have any nominations?

message 15: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Please? I'm not sure I want this sole responsibility. xD

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

So uh...

I asked someone in another group, whose tastes seem to be far from mine, for a rec or two.

I uh...yeah. I'm not ready for such a huge move away from my usuals just yet, but this one seemed intriguing:
The Painted Bird.

message 17: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) I don't have a suggestion, as I have hundreds of books to read.. I'll read just about anything, lets just get this rolling! :)

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe give it until the weekend for anyone else to chime in, then we'll put it to a vote?

message 19: by Vlad (new)

Vlad | 43 comments I vote we dump responsibility for making this choice on Denae. There should be a punishment for showing initiative, after all.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm down with that.

And then the read after we'll make Vlad choose the book.

message 21: by Sara (new)

Sara (inkandpavement) | 19 comments The Handmaid's Tale... I was trying to think of other nominations, but my reading list is about four miles long.I'm up for anything.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I think we're going to go with just picking someone and having them choose the book we read.

And this time it's Denaes turn :P

message 23: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) hahaha.. I also vote for Denae being punished for showing initiative.. good show.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Once she picks, I'll ask a mod to send out a notification in case anyone else wants to join in.

message 25: by Sara (new)

Sara (inkandpavement) | 19 comments well done, this is a good idea.

message 26: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 15 comments This sounds fun. I trust you Denae!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I think we scared off Denae :\

message 28: by Vlad (new)

Vlad | 43 comments And then the read after we'll make Vlad choose the book.
A-HA-HA! Ze power, she will be mine.

I think we scared off Denae :\
Denae? Come back to us, Denae. All is forgiven.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I sent her a pm, no response though.

Hope you have your choice ready, Vlad.

War and Peace in original Russian? That should keep everyone busy for a while.
Lets give Denae a few days.

message 31: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Good lord, I spend one weekend away at a nerd convention and I'm accused of desertion. I should choose Master of the Senate: The Years of Lyndon Johnson just out of pique. Actually, that's a really good book, just long.

I'm going to go with The Lost Books of The Odyssey: A Novel, largely because it's unfamiliar and if it's generally hated you guys won't make me do this again. Seriously though, it's a getting out of my comfort zone thing. And I won't have to wait for it at the library. xD

Happy reading!

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Welp, there we go then.

Give everyone a week to grab it then open up a thread :)

message 33: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 15 comments Sounds great! It's at my library right now too so I have no objections.

>.> I assume this is addressed to a mod. I'm in the process of moving, so I won't have time to do more than read & sporadically participate in the discussion.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah...it was.

But apparently, I'm one now.

A good deed never goes unpunished, it seems...

message 36: by Cori (new)

Cori For more spontaneous group reads, possibly look into doing gutenberg options so anyone can access it. Whatever works though!

That's a great idea.

Or... well, some of us can always get ebooks for free and give them to everyone else. Lol.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

It's a good thing to keep in mind, for those of you next up on the chopping block spot to choose the next book.

message 39: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Hey, question since we're starting this tomorrow. Are we reading and discussing this on a schedule or as a sort of free for all?

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

I think we'll just do a free for all, really. I'll toss up a No Spoiler thread and a Spoiler one. Then, if anyone has other stuff to discuss, they can just make a new thread if they want.

message 41: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Works for me. It's one of two group reads I have starting tomorrow, so I wanted to be sure I have everything straight in my mind. Go go seven books at once! Yes, I lost my mind long ago.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I've tried doing multiple books at once and it never works. I find I can do one non-fic and one fic but that's about it.

My mind, it boggled.

Not even that for me. The best I can do is recurse: stop in the middle of one book, read another start to finish, pop back to the first one.

whimsicalmeerkat Vlad wrote: "Go go seven books at once!

That reminds me. I'm supposed to go schedule an ADD assessment. xD

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Let me save you time. Assessment: Positive.

message 46: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Yes, but they won't give me the good drugs without the assessment!

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Let me save you time. Drugs: I have them.

:P

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Snorting vicodin is an otter crime.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Looks like our read is winding down(or already wound down).

Anyone ready/interested in another?

also: when posts get deleted, it makes mine that get left behind sound all kinds of random. I like it :P

message 50: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I am interested, so long as I am not choosing it.

Now I really should go delete my post about drugs so "Drugs. I have them." is completely random seeming also. :P
