This was a really heart warming and eye opening memoir. I have seen Jackie Kay reading her poetry live and it is really interesting to find out about the life behind the poet. She comes across as intelligent, kind and insightful but not at all pretentious.
I am often blind to the small sufferings people of other backgrounds go through on a day to day basis just because of the colour of their skin or their beliefs. Jackie does not portray herself as a victim despite her colourful life experiences. I found it fascinating to read about the trials of being a person of mixed race and how it must be difficult to come to terms with these multiple ideas of identity. Jackie talks of these issues as a life journey- putting a positive spin on things that other people may be negative about. It was refreshing to hear a life story about a person who had lead a happy life as an adopted child- so much is written negatively today about adoption and fostering, with the increase in popularity of these misery memoirs, it was great to read a true story full of hope and beauty.
