Get ready to get your fingers in shape on the keyboard. You won't be able to tear yourself away!
Welcome to the group Laura. I have gotten tons of great reading lists from this group. I just love it!
Laura, I dont know what to say.... I think they have all said it best!

Laura, which RUssian authors have you read and enjoyed? Ive only just started breaking the ice there.....

As for Russians, I am a big Dostoevsky fan (I am getting a section of crime and punishment tattooed on my bicep) but I have to say for those just breaking the ice, The Master and Magarita by Bulgakov is wonderful. I recommend this book to everyone I know and they always come back to me with nothing but glowing praise about the book. Even people who have trouble getting through novels.
Logan- I found a brilliant Latin American author that has just lately been translated if you're looking for something new from that part of the world - Roberto Bolano. The book I'm reading right now is called The Savage Detectives. It's not magical realist and it's not sentimental like some of the older stuff you get from South America. It took me a while to hit my stride with it, but now that I have, I am blown away,
Laura, Logan has read and liked the Savage Detectives I believe so it does sound like the two of you have similar tastes in your reading....

I l-o-v-e-d Savage Detectives. I think I was the opposite of you on it though. I was very into the opening part of the novel, until it switched to the various people's recollections rather than the 1st person narrative. Then I got a feel for what Bolano was going for and started liking it a lot more. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of his final novel, 2666, in English.
I got tired of trawling through people's bookshelves for new book ideas (not that I need more - I'm already having to sleep on stacks of books because I seem to have lost my bed) so I decided to give you guys a shot. This is my first real foray into book group land. I'm big on Latin American Lit, with a generous helping of Russians and a dusting of contemporary fiction. I'm always open to suggestions and will read anything that will hold still long enough. Well, almost.
I look forward to browsing through your ideas!
