Laura (laurita) Hello...

I got tired of trawling through people's bookshelves for new book ideas (not that I need more - I'm already having to sleep on stacks of books because I seem to have lost my bed) so I decided to give you guys a shot. This is my first real foray into book group land. I'm big on Latin American Lit, with a generous helping of Russians and a dusting of contemporary fiction. I'm always open to suggestions and will read anything that will hold still long enough. Well, almost.

I look forward to browsing through your ideas!

Laura

Linda | 887 comments Welcome to the group Laura, but don't count on seeing your bed anytime soon. In fact, you may want to get a bunk bed and sleep on the top to give you new buys a place to rest.

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Hi Laura, it sounds like we have very similar taste in authors. I've been on a bit of a Russian Lit binge of late but am hoping to make it back to Latin America for some autumn reading. It's always good to read about warmer places during cooler weather.

Laura (laurita) Thanks for the warm welcome!

As for Russians, I am a big Dostoevsky fan (I am getting a section of crime and punishment tattooed on my bicep) but I have to say for those just breaking the ice, The Master and Magarita by Bulgakov is wonderful. I recommend this book to everyone I know and they always come back to me with nothing but glowing praise about the book. Even people who have trouble getting through novels.

Logan- I found a brilliant Latin American author that has just lately been translated if you're looking for something new from that part of the world - Roberto Bolano. The book I'm reading right now is called The Savage Detectives. It's not magical realist and it's not sentimental like some of the older stuff you get from South America. It took me a while to hit my stride with it, but now that I have, I am blown away,

Laura, Logan has read and liked the Savage Detectives I believe so it does sound like the two of you have similar tastes in your reading....

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Laura, thanks for the tips! I've been eying Master and Margarita for a few months now and think that I'll have to take the plunge really soon.

I l-o-v-e-d Savage Detectives. I think I was the opposite of you on it though. I was very into the opening part of the novel, until it switched to the various people's recollections rather than the 1st person narrative. Then I got a feel for what Bolano was going for and started liking it a lot more. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of his final novel, 2666, in English.
