The way this story begins is very classic James. Elements relating to travel often appear within his stories. He was very concered with American's in relation to Europe, and how they appeared within European countries, as well as how they viewed Europeans. So this story starts of with Strether's arriving in England.
One of the things that I enjoy about the work of Jame's is though his works are grounded in reality, he always seems to add a touch of mystery to his works. And throughought this story there are varrius little myterious and allusions made.
To start we are introduced to the somewaht mysterious figure of a woman. Miss Gostrey who attacters herself to Streather's and becomes his hostess and guide, in more than one way I think.
The mystery continues to grow as the story unfolds. In the second chatper of the first part of the book, we learn the Streather's is on some mission of which relates to Mrs. Newsman, though at first his relationship to this woman is left ambiugous, as is his reason for coming to Europe.
I think it would aslo be good to take some time to talk about Waymarsh, and just what his role is.
In chapter 3 of part one there is a rather interesting conversation between Streathers and Miss Gostrey,I will have to take another look at it, and re-examine it, but what are your impressions and insights on the meaning and nature of thier exchange, and how does it play into the storyas a whole.
