Tracy | 32 comments I trying to decide which one to buy. I wanted to hear from all of you Nook owners. I really like the ink technology. It seemed better on my eyes. Does anyone have an ink Nook or is everyone going to the Nook Color.I already have an iPod touch to use as a tablet so that feature isn't important. What are your opinions?

Gatorman | 7679 comments I have the Nook Color. Got to go with Nook Color. Not only is it better to view but the functions and operations are much more user-friendly on the Nook Color. My wife researched both when she was looking to buy me one for Christmas and agreed that the Nook Color is far superior to the Nook in terms of manageability. Also, if you have kids, the color feature is great when reading books with them.

*Suzy (ereaderuser)* (suzyereaderuser) I started with the 3G Nook and love it. When the Nookcolor came out my husband got me one. I do use both. When one is charging I pick up the other. But given the choice, I grab the Nookcolor. Its amazing! I agree that the original is more like reading a book, but my eyes have never been bothered by the Nookcolor. I can also use it in the car at night without having to bother with a seperate light that never quite points at the right spot and has alot of glare. I also love the way you can see all your books on the shelves you create to easily.

Jeanna (jeannafields) Ok...Call me old school but I have to ask! Don't you miss the feel and the smell of books? I am all for technology, but I love the way a book smells when a page fans my face, and the sounds of turning pages? I don't know there just seems like something will be missing. Is it just me?

Jenna, I too, love books better than an e-reader, but I have to say that sometimes the e-reader serves a purpose. Like after work and my eyes are tired, it would be nice to be able to "up" the size of those words I am reading, lol. Also, with the library offering e-pub books, it would be more convenient to get them off the web than to drive out of my way to get to the library-not that I am lazy or anything. It's just convenient.

message 6: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 7679 comments I love the feel of books, too, and for my absolute favorite authors I still read them in paper form, but for other books and authors, it is much more convenient to just download the book and start reading then going to the bookstore or ordering online and waiting for the shipment. Also, since I am running out of room on my bookshelves, it saves a lot of space in my house.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 335 comments I have the original b/w Nook and I love it. Of course I love my hardback books as well - so I read both, my "real" books and my Nook. At this time, I can't imagine not owning and holding onto a real book - besides they look fantastic on your bookshelves. One reason I got a ereader is because it is the future and I didn't want to be left behind!! I love technology!!! :)

I also love real books best. The feel, the smell, being able to flip through them. I am thinking about buying the b/w Nook (better on my eyes)so I can borrow the ebooks from the library and supplement my overloaded shelves. I'll still be reading regular books as well. I,too, love technology.

message 9: by Jeanna (new)

Jeanna (jeannafields) Wow ok! So you can get ebooks for your Kindle or Nook from the Library? I had no idea! I was worried about the expense of it all.

*Suzy (ereaderuser)* (suzyereaderuser) @Jeanna,
I don't believe that library borrowing is a feature of the Kindle. If that is important to you, I would double check with Kindle owners. It is a feature of the Nook.

message 11: by Jeanna (new)

Jeanna (jeannafields) Thank you Suzy! I am so glad you brought that up! I will definitely ask. That might even be worth the diference in cost up front.

message 12: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 7679 comments For those who have complained about the Nook Color being bad for the eyes, you can adjust the brightness and shades of b/w on the backlit screen. I do it all the time depending on where I am reading and never have an issue of my eyes hurting.

*Suzy (ereaderuser)* (suzyereaderuser) I agree! I have the original 3G Nook and the Nookcolor. I use both depending on which is charging. But I do prefer the Nookcolor. And if I were to own just one that is the one it would be. I hate having to take a seperate light to read at night in the car or anywhere for that matter.

I just have the kindle. And, no, you cannot get library books for the kindle. I think it is only for the nook. I think they'd had a sign up at the library or on their website or else I asked a librarian. And I said, oh rats!

message 15: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathy_perkins) | 56 comments I have a Nook Color - birthday present - and find I like it a lot more than i expected. Sample chapters as preview; instant gratification if I'm hooked. There are a number of sites for purchasing indies if you don't want to go to the website of the publisher or to B&N

The library feature of the Nook is easy to use. Our local library is adding ebooks at a good pace. I'm not sure about the cost structure for them, just heard the flap about the publisher wanting to limit the number of times a book could be 'lent', but the purchasing, shelving, damage control, etc has to be a consideration.

message 16: by Carol (new)

Carol | 152 comments I got my Nook color for Christmas and I love it. The fact that Kindle is unable to borrow from libraries was a big factor in my decision. I love the convenience of downloading books at home from the library or from B&N. Other Nook owners have posted that they are members of multiple libraries to get a larger selection of ebooks. Check out the Nook groups on Goodreads!
I love the option of downloading magazines or buying subscriptions as well. Less recycling!
I do adjust the brightness and font size depending on where I am. I can read outside, but not in bright sunlight. The regular Nook or the Kindle are better for that.
By the way, B&N is opening a new app store for the Nook and you will be able to download game apps (like Angry Birds) and other apps for your Nook color.
We are planning to downsize from a large home to something much smaller. I love the idea of owning hundreds of books I can access at any time all kept in one small device!

message 17: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 32 comments Thanks, Carol, I never thought to look for a Nook group on Goodreads.

message 18: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 335 comments Tracy another cool thing I like about the Nook is, you can go into a B&N bookstore and take advantage of reading your book for free, you can only read for an hour - but it is a pretty cool feature. Also they sometimes give free food in the Starbuck Cafe's that are inside B&N. I am also a member of the Nook group on Goodreads - come join us if you decide to get a Nook or if you have any additional questions.....

Tracy | 32 comments Thanks everyone for all your input and comments. They really helped me in making my decision. I finally decided on the b/w Nook 3G & W/F and bought it last Friday. I'm so excited! I already loaded 4 books on it!

Congrats, Tracy! I'm sure you'll love it! I am still learning about my Nook! Join the Nook groups here to learn more and ask questions. B&N has a good community for Nook users, and there is a Facebook page as well!
The Free Friday books are posted on these sites. Also, if you browse 0.00 on your Nook Shopping, you will see lots of free books. I've downloaded some classics and some .99 books as well.
Enjoy!

Tracy | 32 comments Carol,
Wow, thanks! I joined the B&N Nook group on here. I'm excited about lending and borrowing, too! Such a world of possibilities! I feel like a kid at Christmas.

Which nook group do you belong to on Goodreads?

Besides the B&N group I belong to Books on Board and Nook Lending. One thing I haven't learned about is lending books by using epub. I think this enables you to lend all your books, not just the ones marked "lendable" by B&N. I want to learn about this and also the legality of it. Although, if I bought any book and wanted to lend it to friends or family, I could do it legally as many times as I wished.
This seems like the early days of sharing music and how that was sorted out.
I also have gotten great help from the B&N store employees, and my local library. Our library has held workshops for folks with ereaders (except Kindle) to teach how to use the virtual library to check out ebooks.

Jeanna (jeannafields) My kids made the decision for me and THREW me into the futre :) I received a Nook Color for Mother's Day and I have to say -- You all were RIGHT... I LOVE IT!! I haven't been able to put it down yet! So now I have to learn about this lending and the Nook friends etc. It sounds fantastic. I also have Lupus - an auto immune disease and it causes my joints in my hands to be swollen and painful quite often. The Nook is so light and easy to hold. What was I thinking holding out LOL. Of course I will never ever stop buying books - as they are a form of art in my eyes.
So now I am going to re-read all of your posts and try to figure out the "friend" and "lending" thing.
Thank you all for the advice - in advance ;) as I know I will have tons of future questions.
~ Jeanna

This will be changing: http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.z...

I have the newest Kindle3 and will look forward to library lending later this year when it becomes available.

Joseph Cacciotti (josephjcacciotti) | 15 comments Jeanna, If your old fashion than so am I, I like to look at my library of books and see the titles looking back at me. I think it compliments a person when you can see what they read. I don't think yu can do that with the kindle, I realize some people enjoy the kindle. Are these the same people that complain that automation is killing american jobs, what do you think the kindle will do to book stores and libraries?

I am not sure what's going to happen. I have to say, Joseph, I am impressed with Nook. But, I will always continue to purchase books. There is nothing like a book. I am hoping we a are not a dying breed, and that quite possibly they will be looked at as works of art and collected as such. I know our library has not slowed down at all, but it is mainly the computer lab that is always booming. They do have wonderful story time hours that kids still enjoy. And as far as who is complaining about the automation killing jobs LOL - who knows... I would just love to see MORE jobs in the USA. It saddens me to see so many unemployed. With the number of people on Goodreads.com and we know that is just a sampling... maybe there is hope for our beloved leather bound, hardcover, and paperback adventures.

Joseph Cacciotti (josephjcacciotti) | 15 comments Yes, but you have to realize that this Nook is just getting started, the more books you can down load, the less times you will be traveling to the library.
Sooner or later you will be able just to stay home and download anything you want, and that's how I get most of my information now for writing my books. Therefore I'm just as quilty for costing someone a job somewhere.

Hahaha Well - maybe not because we are overly sensitive to this. I will still make the effort to go to the library as my children do NOT have Nooks ;) I am not giving up quite yet and my guilt is a great motivator!

My library recently noted that books will shortly be available for the kindle. I think in their last newsletter. They said in about a month or so. So that's good news.

Last year my cousin told me that one of the local universities (where she is friends with the librarian) recently went all electronic. No more books (in the traditional sense). That seemed going a bit far to me.

By the way, I am involved in a reading group with the library, the librarians are using kindles or possibly nooks.

Elizabeth (Alaska) It seems to me that electronic textbooks is a superb idea, that it will lower costs to the student. There is no reason to expect that authors will lose on the deal. I was talking to a local bookseller the other day about the advent of electronic media. The conclusion is that nooks and kindles and other ereaders seem to be increasing the number of people reading. That should be good for all of us.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39180 comments They are very handy to read commuting on the bus/train. I see a number of people with them. I sometimes use it on the train. Many people are also fooling around with their phones - whether they are reading on them or just fooling with their text/e-mail. But everybody is looking at something. You don't see that many people actually reading a physical newspaper anymore.

Congrats on your new Nook, Jeanna! I hear you on the lightness of the Nook. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I love the Nook because I can borrow ebooks from my library online. this is great in the winter and when I'm not feeling well.
My library had a workshop on using the Nook with Overdrive, which is the platform my library uses to borrow ebooks.
I still love to go to the library, and I still read paper books and listen to audio books while I knit, garden and travel.

Joseph Cacciotti (josephjcacciotti) | 15 comments I also try and visit the library a couple times a week, due to my work schedule I wish I could spend more time there, but even a couple times a month is more than some people do.
When my kids were small we used to take them to the Book mobile here in Racine, and they had a great time. However, my youngest right now is 23 and this was way before the nook entered the playing field.

Jeanna (jeannafields) @Dorie and Carol - Thank you Both! I am glad to be here! I am also excited about the prospect to lending on the Nook. I have joined a couple of groups here on GR for that purpose as well.

@Joseph - I see you wrote a book - I am going to have to check that out! A detective! Right up my alley!
