Courtney Hey everyone!
I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for me, I need to find some new books/authors to read!! I like authors like John Irving, Margaret Atwood, Jane Urquhart, Nick Hornby, Paulo Coelho, Jose Saramago..I loved the Steig Larson trilogy

Please help! Thankss!

message 2: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I didn't see any mystery authors in your list except Larson. Have you ever read any of Jeffrey Deaver's books? I just love them.

message 3: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Hmm.. no i haven't. I'll have to check him out.
Thanks!

Petra You enjoyed Shantaram, so I'd recommend A Fine Balance and The White Tiger.

Also, going from your "Read" list, I think you may like Three Seconds, The Woman in White, The Hotel New Hampshire, I Know This Much Is True and Fall on Your Knees.

I also recommend Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series.

Courtney Thanks! Wow..everyone is so helpful!
I have read Mistry's Such a Long Journey and have always considered reading his other books!

message 6: by Petra (new)

Petra I've read that one, too. It was good but A Fine Balance was better, I thought. I've been wanting to read more books by Mistry as well.

message 7: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I loved The Woman in White. Once I got started I could not put it down.

Courtney Petra - Did you enjoy I know this much is true by Wally Lamb? I just picked it up tonight from a used book store! It's so long, I hope it's worth it! I've heard good things about it though!

message 9: by Petra (new)

Petra Courney, I read this when it first came out so the details are blurred. However, I remember enjoying it quite a bit.

Chinook | 12 comments Try Intuition - it's the only one of hers I've read so far, but I loved it and I enjoy the same general authors that you do. I will be reading everything else by her that I can get my hands on.

message 11: by Courtney (new)

Courtney I've never heard of her - sounds interesting. Thanks!

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I love a bunch of the authors you mentioned, especially Stieg Larsson. :) Here are some of my favorites you might wanna check out:

The Shadow of the Wind
City of Thieves
The Book Thief
The Road
The Thirteenth Tale

message 13: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 12 comments I totally second City of Thieves and The Thirteenth Tale. I liked The Road as well, though it freaked me out a bit because I was reading it during a thunderstorm and alone in the house.

message 14: by Petra (new)

Petra I second The Shadow Of The Wind (absolutely great book) and The Book Thief.

Colin Falconer (httpscolinfalconerbookscom) If you like Nick Hornby - try Jonathan Tropper - How To Talk To A Widower. He's like an American version.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments I agree with the above, I think you'd like Jonathan Tropper. I liked How to Talk to a Widower, but I liked This Is Where I Leave You and The Book of Joe even more.

Have you read anything by Jonathan Safran Foer? I loved both of his fiction books, but Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is probably the most accessible of the two.

I really loved I Know This Much Is True. It's big, but it never felt long (does that make sense?). I flew through it in two days and was bummed when it was over. I also have to throw in my vote for The Book Thief and The Shadow of the Wind.

Hmmm... a few others:

The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters
The Corrections - Jonathan Franzen
All Families Are Psychotic - Douglas Coupland
Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami (there are a lot of other Murakami books, but this is the only one I've read so far)
In the Woods, The Likeness, and Faithful Place - Tana French (these are books 1-3 of a "series", but they are really stand alone books that don't have to be read in order)

I hope this helps a little! :o)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments A book I saw on your to-read list that I really enjoyed - The Count of Monte Cristo.

Dee (austhokie) | 618 comments if you liked Steig Larsson, have you tried out any of the other nordic writers

You could try:
Henning Mankell - Faceless Killers (Wallander book 1)
Karin Fossum - Don't Look Back (Sejer Book 1)
James Thompson - Snow Angels (also a book 1)
