Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I love Summerset. He's grumpy a lot, sure, but underneath it, he totally cares.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I think he is a good comic relief.

I don't see him as miserable just anal. Really Really Anal

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 4621 comments Yeah that's true dee

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments I also see the Anal-ness!!

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments Ditto. Completely anal retentive. In fact, I looked up the term on wikipedia, and it SCREAMS Summerset:

"The term anal-retentive ... is used conversationally to describe a person who pays such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others, potentially to the detriment of the anal-retentive person."

Heehee!

that is so cool!

message 59: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 20 comments I don't see Sommerset as a miserable guy..first of all he's British and a butler. So therefore he has that persona--in charge of all the household stuff and is quite reserved. He also has a very personal relationship with Roarke--a father figure really. Enter Eve--a cop and a bit rough around the edges and NOT Sommerset's idea of the type of woman Roarke deserves to be with--and he might feel like he has to protect Roarke from unsavory characters. But as he gets to know the type of person Eve is--then he becomes protective of her. Even from the first part of the series, when he comes upon her having a nightmare--he starts to understand her and what she's been through. You also see as the series evolves, more of what Sommerset has gone through himself with his daughter and some of his background. I really like him. He's very competent, takes care of the household, food, etc.. I would value a person that does all the little things that keeps the house running smoothly...hey, like a mom!

message 60: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 4621 comments Well it's like he never smiles or anything

message 61: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments That would be creepy! Smiling isn't his thing, you know?

message 62: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments What I don't understand is why he is the butler. I mean he took Roarke in when he was a beaten up kid. He protected him and even killed Roarke's father, which I realize Roarke doesn't know, but still he could be doing anything even working in Roarke's company as a vice president or something.

message 63: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 4621 comments I have no idea

message 64: by Sara ♥ (last edited Mar 10, 2012 08:03PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments THAT is what I've always wondered! I mean, I get that this is Summerset's way of taking care of Roarke, but the butler? Seems so... menial...

TRUE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 66: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments the only thing I can guess is this is where Summerset wanted to be.....Still I wish Robb would address it sometime

message 67: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 4621 comments Yeah i wish that too

message 68: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments Same

message 69: by Stephaney (new)

Stephaney | 4 comments I think he is a little more than a butler. He basically runs Roarke's entire household and manages all his personal affairs. I think he probably fell into that position by wanting to micro-manage his "son" and Roarke indulges him and wouldn't really trust anyone else anyway.

message 70: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments Stephaney wrote: "I think he is a little more than a butler. He basically runs Roarke's entire household and manages all his personal affairs. I think he probably fell into that position by wanting to micro-manage..."

...that also makes sense

message 71: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I like that idea, Stephaney, and I agree, Dee... I don't think he'd be doing it if he didn't want to.

message 72: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments I adore summerset. He and Eve make a great team. Dee, I agree about the comic relief. I just finished Vengeance, which is one of my favorites. There are some great insights into the character in that book. Mira has some especially interesting observations.

message 73: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 4621 comments I think summerset is odd lol

message 74: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments Of course he is odd, that is what makes him such a great character.

message 75: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie Jackson He is not British. He uses a British accent but has a slight Slavic accent under it, and the last name of his daughter could be Slavic. Don't remember the books that information came from.
It has been indicated more than once that he knows all of Roarke's business and that he could run Roarke Industries. In the early books I thought of him as a major-domo, but in a couple of the later books they used a better term. Can anyone think of it?

message 77: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments Ok, Miz has been asking us to name 5 adjectives that some character. I am beating her to the punch. Please Name 5 adjectives that describe Summerset

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
Loyal, reserved, trustworthy, mysterious and snobby.

message 79: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I'd say the same, except replace snobby with anal-retentive... ;)

message 80: by Jonetta (new)

That and more!

message 81: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I have been rereading some of the in death books and Is his named spelled Sommerset or Summerset?

message 82: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
Summerset with a "u."

message 83: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments Thanks I guess that is another mistake in the typing because in some of the books it is So... instead of Su...

I checked her website and she doesn't mention it but it doesn't mean it didn't happen!

message 85: by Nikki (new)

Nikki I love how he can judge Eve's mood by the level if insult lobbed at him.

Like the time Eve lost her job, and she apologized to Summerset, he called Roarke right away because he knew something was wrong.

And later, how Eve, as much as she hates it, will ask Summerset for advice. Like a gift, or food for dinner.

Great chemistry bettween Eve and Summerset.

message 86: by Beeg (new)

Beeg Panda (beegpanda) | 70 comments Does he EVER let up, though? He's so nasty to her in Born In Death. On the otherhand, I suppose even if he does let up she'll probably be quite bewildered and wouldn't know how to handle him then LOL. Just this stick up his ass is bothering me more than usual in this book

There are times he bugs me more than others...when his bite cuts a little deep.

message 88: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) It wouldn't be the same if Eve and Summerset didn't snipe at each other. But they do respect each other on some level.

message 89: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) Who is Lawrence? Don't remember him.

message 90: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
Lawrence is Summerset's first name.

message 91: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) Thank you, Jonetta. I'm sure I have seen it or heard it. It some just did register with me. He's always been SUMMERSET to me.

Cecile | 6 comments help! from which book is this scene:
Summerset found out what happened to Eve when she was a kid..I remember Roarke was out somewhere and Eve fell asleep in her office (?) and she had one of those nightmares again. Summerset heard her or something and he met Roarke in the stairs.

message 95: by Lanie (new)

Lanie (icevamp) | 11 comments I think they’re both equally nasty to each other. I personally think there has to be one person to tell Eve she has flaws and while most of the supporting characters are in her corner, Somerset is the one person who challenges her and reminds her that the world does not revolve around her - he’s the reality check. But there’s an expectation there of banter. I recall one of the books where Somerset tells Rourke that Eve “apologized,” as if that’s the worst thing she could do to him, indicating that she’s not okay, and he should do something. It proves he does care about her but he doesn’t want her to know that. If they’re ever nice to each other, I would think we were in Bizarro World.
