Is it possible to add an alternative spelling of an author, to be used in searches?

My question arises because I just added a book in portuguese whose author is "Mestre Eckhart", whereas is it widely known as "Meister Eckhart".

I would correct the author on the one you added to Meister Eckhart. Meister isn't a name, it was his title. You're just using the Portuguese word for Master. His real name was Eckhart von Hochheim.

I have corrected it and combined it with another version already listed.

Thank you. But are you sure that they are versions of the same book? The name is identical, but I would expect them to have different selections of treatises and sermons. I have no way to tell because I could not find the TOC of the English book and my copy is at home.
