For some reason our heroes are underground visiting a caste-based society of aliens. They see statues of "demons" but their hosts skirt the issue of who they are.

Later it turns out the demons are part of the warrior caste, elite soldiers - tall, red, heads look like dogs. In their chests is a single claw which whips out and kills whoever they get close enough to.

There is a fight between the demons of two of the alien factions witnessed by our heroes - the demons are excellent marksmen, and never miss so the fight was basically a war of attrition.

Why they were fighting and what happened to our heroes, how the got underground and the basic point of the story I do not remember.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

You've already gone above and beyond with your other help. Cheers!

The description of the warrior caste seems about right, but nothing of the plot line seems familiar, and "Crazy Eddie" sounds distinctive enough that I hope I'd have remembered the name, if not the significance. I'll start on this book next and see. If the other moties refused to acknowledge the existence of the warrior caste and referred to them as "demons" from their own mythology - but not real (which they are), then this is probably it. I think I'll wait a few more days before moving it to the potentially solved folder just in case...

Thanks again for the reference in the other post--

Cheers!
