Things Our Children Won't Get to Enjoy

Saturday morning cartoons
Having to wait for holiday specials
Really, any element of not being able to watch what you want any time you want. Yes, I love the convenience too, but the anticipation and celebration about it was far more exciting.

long porch night conversations with the family
sleeping porches
records
8-track
beta
snail mail
phone cords, the great corralling toy accessory
riding in the window or the floorboard of the car on long road trips (before seatbelt laws)
Bike rides and long days around the neighborhood during the summertime.
Being inaccessible when away from the parents (no cell phones, no pagers, no texting, no internet)

Good thing nobody brought them up then.

Good thing :)

There are lots of retro stores in my city that still sell tapes and LPs and even 8 tracks. You can get get typewriters at certain places. The reason I stopped using my typewriter was because they discontinued the ribbons.
I've found a lot of old stuff on YouTube, things I never thought I'd see. I also have checked out many old radio programs from the library.

Here's my addition to the list: the joy of hunting for an LP or CD in the endless racks of a music store, and perhaps not even finding it but finding something else instead, and the triumph of finally coming across it months or weeks or years after you first started looking.

They don't... or at least I've not seen any at the stores. I've even looked for recipes to make my own. The jello pops were my faves. The closest I've found to flavor/consistency is Edy's fruit bars.

I listen to it all the time, and digging for a record at a used music place is sooo much cooler than just searching for it on ITunes.
Erin, that is so cool that your mom gave you a turntable and schooled you on how awesome they are. I wish I'd kept mine.

...sorry Dutch!...
Dutch, you should have been around during the Miniature Amsterdam days...the hazing newbies went through there was brutal, thanks to a certain name who shall not be mentioned; his name rhymes with Kavid Dowalski.
I remember Sunday Night movies on ABC, CBS, and NBC. Edited for Television versions of your favorite films.
Also, whatever happened to the miniseries? I know they've become the exclusive domain of cable and premium cable channels, but back in the 1980s, the miniseries was what kept Richard Chamberlain employed.

I thought I was your first.

I thought I was your first."
You know what that makes you then Larry?

My parents have had the same phone number since before I was born. So I KNOW it. A few years ago I was at my aunt's house and she has a rotary dial phone. I tried to dial my parents number on it, got half way through, and forgot where I was at! lol And we used to have rotary dial until I was 10!
Uh, Koeeaoddi...read my first post again, if you don't mind, because that will answer your question. ;-P
AND WHY IN THE HELL DO MY THREADS ALWAYS GET HIJACKED???

Hey, I can't be around all the time to police this thread.
Don't call me Gusteroo. I've killed many a man over calling me that. My killing days are over, ya hear me?
I shot a duckface in Reno. Just to hear his death quack.
Only if you promise to dump them both with style Dutch!
Jesus, Dutch, how many love triangles can you be in at the same time?
Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

Gotcha, Dutch. Carry on. I'm all aboard.

I know someone who got his 8 year old daughter an old typewriter (from the 50s) and she loves using it. Whenever she needs to write a thank you note she gets out the typewriter.

My dad made us use a typewriter for six months when me and my brothers all got low scores on our spelling and grammar tests. He said we were too used to Autocorrect and spell check. And it sucked for the first couple weeks, because everytime we made an error, we'd have to type the whole damn thing up all over again.
And this got me thinking about things I enjoyed which I know my daughter will never get the opportunity to enjoy. Things like:
1. The aforementioned KBFH, or your local rock station broadcasting any live gig on the radio.
2. "Chiller Theatre" on Saturday nights on WPIX Channel 11 (New York), broadcasting some of the best horror movies ever filmed.
3. LPs.
4. Typewriters (although an article in today's NY Times suggests they're making a comeback).
...just to name a few.
Anything from your past that you think our future generations will never get to enjoy?
