I was listening to some live concerts on Wolfgang's Vault the other night, and it reminded me of listening to the King Biscuit Flour Hour on the radio Saturday nights. For those of you too young to remember, the KBFH was a weekly program which would broadcast live gigs of your favorite bands of the day, i.e., the Who, Genesis, ELP, Springsteen, etc. I would look forward to listening to that show, and tape the show for future playing.

And this got me thinking about things I enjoyed which I know my daughter will never get the opportunity to enjoy. Things like:

1. The aforementioned KBFH, or your local rock station broadcasting any live gig on the radio.
2. "Chiller Theatre" on Saturday nights on WPIX Channel 11 (New York), broadcasting some of the best horror movies ever filmed.
3. LPs.
4. Typewriters (although an article in today's NY Times suggests they're making a comeback).

...just to name a few.

Anything from your past that you think our future generations will never get to enjoy?

sad.

Rolling their fingers through the holes in a rotary dial phone.

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments The kids are loving records these days, so I don't think they're going away.

Saturday morning cartoons
Having to wait for holiday specials

Really, any element of not being able to watch what you want any time you want. Yes, I love the convenience too, but the anticipation and celebration about it was far more exciting.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Pinwheel (Nickelodeon)
long porch night conversations with the family
sleeping porches
records
8-track
beta
snail mail
phone cords, the great corralling toy accessory
riding in the window or the floorboard of the car on long road trips (before seatbelt laws)
Bike rides and long days around the neighborhood during the summertime.
Being inaccessible when away from the parents (no cell phones, no pagers, no texting, no internet)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I heard that EZ-Bake Ovens are being discontinued because you can't get the light bulbs for them anymore. Everything is now compact fluorescent. :(

Good thing nobody brought them up then.

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I have a nice stash of incandescent bulbs in my closet. Just in case.

There are lots of retro stores in my city that still sell tapes and LPs and even 8 tracks. You can get get typewriters at certain places. The reason I stopped using my typewriter was because they discontinued the ribbons.

I've found a lot of old stuff on YouTube, things I never thought I'd see. I also have checked out many old radio programs from the library.

Sarah | 13814 comments Jello Pops and Pudding Pops - do they still make those? If so, disregard.

Here's my addition to the list: the joy of hunting for an LP or CD in the endless racks of a music store, and perhaps not even finding it but finding something else instead, and the triumph of finally coming across it months or weeks or years after you first started looking.

They don't... or at least I've not seen any at the stores. I've even looked for recipes to make my own. The jello pops were my faves. The closest I've found to flavor/consistency is Edy's fruit bars.

message 13: by Erin (new)

Erin (eecamp) I totally got a turntable for X-mas last year...it came w/ a little round thing, and I innocently asked my mom what it was for. She replied that it was for a 45, and so began my education on LP's.

I listen to it all the time, and digging for a record at a used music place is sooo much cooler than just searching for it on ITunes.

Jim | 6484 comments Welcome to TC Erin.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Erin, that is so cool that your mom gave you a turntable and schooled you on how awesome they are. I wish I'd kept mine.

message 17: by Erin (new)

Erin (eecamp) hehe, I'm cruisin' through some of the other posts, and I'll try not to get accustomed to the fantastic politeness at this thread...guess I caught people while they were being all nostalgic and stuff!

...sorry Dutch!...

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Dutch, you should have been around during the Miniature Amsterdam days...the hazing newbies went through there was brutal, thanks to a certain name who shall not be mentioned; his name rhymes with Kavid Dowalski.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I remember Sunday Night movies on ABC, CBS, and NBC. Edited for Television versions of your favorite films.

Also, whatever happened to the miniseries? I know they've become the exclusive domain of cable and premium cable channels, but back in the 1980s, the miniseries was what kept Richard Chamberlain employed.

message 20: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Are you sure that I didn't welcome you Dutch?

My parents have had the same phone number since before I was born. So I KNOW it. A few years ago I was at my aunt's house and she has a rotary dial phone. I tried to dial my parents number on it, got half way through, and forgot where I was at! lol And we used to have rotary dial until I was 10!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I shot a duckface in Reno. Just to hear his death quack.

message 41: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) But did he try to duck at the last second?

I know someone who got his 8 year old daughter an old typewriter (from the 50s) and she loves using it. Whenever she needs to write a thank you note she gets out the typewriter.

Yes. I love paper maps.

Postage stamps.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

My dad made us use a typewriter for six months when me and my brothers all got low scores on our spelling and grammar tests. He said we were too used to Autocorrect and spell check. And it sucked for the first couple weeks, because everytime we made an error, we'd have to type the whole damn thing up all over again.

Brittomart Wait, Dutch has a TC crush on who now?
