*spoilers*
Planets are colonized, originally with one-way hyperspace portals, but now the tech has developed enough to travel easily between planets, and a rich boy who is smart but maladjusted is sent to a beach world. He meets a girl and an older guy. The older guy persuades him to go after the girl, which he does, and then persuades him to pursue his dreams of doing X? He leaves the girl and the plot ensues.

At the end of the book he somehow finds out how to travel in time and the conclusion shows him going back to that beach planet as the original older guy, meets himself, encourages his younger self to do the plot and once his younger self leaves, his older self goes back to the girl and they live happily ever after.

One of the last scenes is of him watching one of the earliest colony ships heading through the original one-way-only hyperspace gates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I was hopeful since I remember reading Hyperion, but it turned out that wasn't it. Thanks, though. I appreciate the help. If you're interested, the next person got it - Fallen Dragon by Peter Hamilton.

Cheers!

Wikipedia has a pretty good synopsis of the plot:

That's it! Thanks a lot for your help--

Cheers!
