Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Please post any comments and/or discussions you have about Alice Hoffman's book, " Practical Magic " in this thread.

As it is a work of fiction, I am hoping it will generate more interest.

Mawgojzeta I read this a while back. I had held off for years because I had seen the movie already. I enjoyed the book. Obviously some things were different and the book contains things not included in the book. I don't know that I would ever re-read the book, though.

I look forward to people's opinions as they read.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I read it recently and found it much more appealing than the movie. It had a much darker edge to it and there was much more depth to the characters.

I must admit that I did not get off to to a good start with Alice Hoffman, having resented every moment spent almost forcing myself through " The Ice Queen " but I found " Practical Magic " a much more satisfying read.

Mawgojzeta My only other experience with her was reading The Probable Future, which I liked more than "Practical Magic".

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Has anyone else read the book and care to comment?

Jacqui | 25 comments I read the book a few years ago as my daughters love the movie as do I. i enjoyed the book and I expected it to differ from the movie but both are equally as good. I was going to re-read it for the challenge but haven't been able to find it at the moment I'm going to have a root around the various to be read piles and hopefully get to read it this weekend.

Kiera It's my favorite movie, so I was disapointed when the book was SO different. But it was still a good book.

Chris (celticviking88) PM is one of my utmost favourite movies ever. I have to say that I have never read the book, but look forward to doing so soon as possible. BB

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I prefer to think of the book and the movie as separate entities. Usually I don't enjoy a book if I have seen the movie first, but I was surprised to find I think I prefer the book (just slightly), interestingly so, because I was left rather unimpressed by two of Alice Hoffman's other books.

This is one of hers that I've not read, though I did see the movie, which I thought was OK. I'm curious, Ancestral, which others of her books have you read? I love "Blackbird House", which is a linked short story collection. I've reviewed a couple of her works here.

Alice Hoffman is one of my favourite authors. She lives in the greater Boston area, Cambridge I think, and has done a lot for the breast cancer center at Mt. Auburn Hospital. She raised a ton of money with a series of author dinners that I was able to attend. They included authors like Arthur Golden, Chris Bohjelian, Jill McCorkle, even Robert B. Parker. When she first started, it was a luncheon and every table had an author.

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I've read The Ice Queen and I can't remember the name of the other one, to be honest, I just remember struggling to get through them.
