I started reading a book in 1992 (I believe it was already a few years old at that point) about a man who was horribly scarred and wore a mask. I lost the book before I finished it. It seemed the hero was older or resigned to his fate. The heroine visited him often(piano lessons? I can't quite recall) and was not afraid of him. They began to fall in love. I believe they were about to go out in public...a masquerade?...not sure. I seem to remember that she crossed a bridge to get to his residence and may have lived across the street from him. This book has haunted me for 20 years and I have been unable to find any clue to help me. I think the title may have been a single word.

Amazing!!! In little more than an hour, you found it. Brilliant! I can't thank you enough. It is such an obscure book, I don't know how I even came across it. The reviews are very mixed. I guess I will get to finish it and decide for myself if it was worth wondering about all these years. I guess the subject matter was so haunting to me when I was younger. Thank you again!

Dawn | 220 comments Wow, I was making a *big* guess on that one. I read that book once, probably, a loooong time ago. I remembered the author, not the title, so I googled her name and "beauty and the beast" lol.

Glad I could help :)

Its funny but because I remembered that he gave her lessons I tried to find a Phantom of the Opera themed romance. I didn't have any luck and after exhausting all of beauty and the beast optins I tried here. The book is actually described as a phantom of the opera/beauty and the beast blend. You are awesome!
