Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I think part of it is that I used to be more generous with my ratings but get stingier the more books I read and rate on here.

But that's like taking a multiple choice test to determine like-mindness which rarely works anyways.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I know what you mean Cassi. There are several books that I that I loved at the time when they were added, but as I've read more books, a few have been tarnished compared to better books I've read. It doesn't mean that I stopped liking them, but that maybe the ratings should be lowered a bit because they're not on par with other books I've given the same amount of stars.

Every once in a while I'll go back and change a rating, but there's still several that could probably stand to be changed.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) 1 - The best book you read last year: There's about 4 I can't pick between. Would've been easier if I could pick from this year. :)

13 - Your favorite author: Richelle Mead because she has multiple series I like.
14 - Favorite male character: Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon

Heidi Favorite of all time is hard one.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Heidi (the original) wrote: "Favorite of all time is hard one."

Agreed. Especially if you've loved a book recently but it is hard to know how it'll stand the test of time. So I cheated and put 2.

Katie | 1 comments 1 - The best book you read last year: Poison Study Thank you, amazon, for relentlessly recommending this book to me, because no one I know has heard of it.

2 - A book you've read more than 3 times: The Lightning Thief LOVE these books!!!

3 - Your favourite series: I can't choose. I love a lot of series for different reasons. Percy Jackson Collection: the Lightning Thief, the Last Olympian, the Titans Curse, Sea of Monsters, the Battle of the Labyrinth
The Dark Is Rising Sequence
Harry Potter Boxed Set
Green Rider
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci: Volume I
The Warrior Heir
and a few more, but I will stop there...

4 - A guilty pleasure book: Twilight I know it's literary refuse, but still...

5 - A book that made you laugh: Clockwork Angel It's not a comedy, but Will can be funny :)

6 - A book that made you cry: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

7 - Most underrated book: Knightley Academy This is super cute and fun, but it seems that most people haven't heard of it yet.

8 - Most overrated book: Hush, Hush What was all the hype about? This was not that great, really.

9 - A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving: Matched I was super reluctant to get this, but the details of the world were interesting and revealed at a good pace.

10 - Favorite classic book: Either Pride and Prejudice, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, or To Kill a Mockingbird

11 - A book you hated: The Forest of Hands and Teeth I couldn't get through this book. Ugh.

12 - A book you used to love but don’t anymore: The Dark Side of Nowhere I was obsessed with this book in 8th grade.

13 - Your favorite author: That's difficult. Hm. I'm going to say Rick Riordan.

14 - Favorite male character: Hanson "Cuffs" Alister The Demon King The Exiled Queen

15 - Favorite female character: Yelena Liana Zaltana Poison Study or Karigan G'ladheon Green Rider or Raisa ana'Marianna The Demon King

16 - Your biggest fictional crush: At the moment...Han Alister. Perfect mix of bad boy charm and nice boy interior.

17 - A good quick read: Torn and the rest of the Trylle trilogy.

18 - A book that disappointed you: Forest Born Honestly, this was not as good as the rest of the Bayern series, which rank among my favorite books.

19 - Favorite book-to-movie conversion: Hands down, Holes by Louis Sachar. I love love love the movie, they did a great job with it.

20 - Favorite romance: It's still developing, but there's a deliciously lovely scene with Raisa and Han in The Exiled Queen. I also enjoyed the odd relationship between Yelena and Valek in Poison Study.

21 - Favorite book from your childhood: When I was very little, I loved these two books: Olaf the Ship's Cat and The Poky Little Puppy. On Christmas Eve night, I would listen to the latter on tape while following along in my book.

22 - A book you can't wait for: The Son of Neptune, The Gray Wolf Throne, Clockwork Prince

23 - A book you've been meaning to read for ages: Fire I enjoyed Graceling, but I am reluctant to read Fire for some reason. Not really sure why...

28 - Favorite book title: Nothing springs to mind...

29 - A book everyone hated but you liked: A Tale of Two Cities

message 58: by Laura (new)

Laura I had some time to waste at work...

1 - The best book you read last year: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Zafon Ruiz

2 - A book you've read more than 3 times: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

3 - Your favourite series: The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset or The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. As great as Harry Potter is, it’s seven books long and two of them are rather weak.

4 - A guilty pleasure book: Memoirs of a Geisha. It's such a blatant romance story, and I normally hate those.

5 - A book that made you laugh: The Lies of Locke Lamora. Parts of it are dark and crazy, but Locke is hilarious.

6 - A book that made you cry: The Book Thief.

7 - Most underrated book: Transformation. I never knew about it until I randomly stumbled across it on Goodreads. It's such a great fantasy novel.

8 - Most overrated book: The easy answer is Twilight. The more thought-out answer is Wuthering Heights.

9 - A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving: The Hunger Games. I was so nervous going in because it was YA, written in first person and sounded like a rip off of Battle Royale (see #12 for a laugh).

10 - Favorite classic book: Heart of Darkness. I had to read it so many times for class, but I love it so very, very much.

11 - A book you hated: The Great Gatsby. There are no possible words to explain how much I loath this book.

12 - A book you used to love but don’t anymore: Battle Royale. The concept is still awesome, but the dialogue is ridiculous and some of the characters are so annoying, which I didn't realize until I read it again a few months ago.

13 - Your favorite author: Neil Gaiman

14 - Favorite male character: Sam Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings. He's just so adorable and loyal and country bumpkinish. Or Locke Lamora. I'm still reading the book but he's so badass and funny, which is a great combo in my opinion. Or Peeta Mellark. Because of Mockingjay.

15 - Favorite female character: Lyra Belacqua from His Dark Materials.

16 - Your biggest fictional crush: Peeta Mellark – he’s just like my fiancée, though, so it makes sense.

17 - A good quick read: The Giver. Loved it then, love it now, it's so deep for a short book and the ending!

18 - A book that disappointed you: Graceling.

19 - Favorite book-to-movie conversion: The Lord of the Rings. It took out all the boring history and poetry.

20 - Favorite romance: Alanna and George from The Song of the Lioness Quartet. I always loved him and I kept waiting and waiting for her to truly be with him.

21 - Favorite book from your childhood: Redwall.

22 - A book you can't wait for: The Twelve. It doesn’t come out until next year though!

23 - A book you've been meaning to read for ages: The Mists of Avalon of A Game of Thrones.

24 - A book that you wish more people would read: The Book Thief. I don’t personally know anyone who has read it.

25 - Character you are most similar to: Probably Katsa from Graceling, unfortunately. I have a temper and no patience.

26 - A book that changed your opinion about something: The Golden Compass.

27 - Most surprising plot twist or ending: The Shadow of the Wind. Because who suspects surprise (view spoiler)?

28 - Favorite book title: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies! More seriously, The Shadow of the Wind.

29 - A book everyone hated but you liked: Heart of Darkness.

30 - Your favorite book OF ALL TIME: HOW CAN YOU ASK THIS QUESTION?

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Laura wrote: 19 - Favorite book-to-movie conversion: The Lord of the Rings. It took out all the boring history and poetry.

I didn't think of this one! I read LOTR right after I read Harry Potter on the suggestion of the librarian (I know LOTR is brilliant & all but those do not connect as well as said Librarian thought). I read all of them (starting with hobbit) but years later when people asked me what happened I was like "They walked and they walked and there were lots of trees," because it was slower than my reading pace so I think a lot of the effect was lost on me.

I mean I must've liked something to read 4 books. But I honestly don't remember what.

Heidi The Book Thief is one of my all time favorites! I made my sister read it and she loved it too.

They do walk a lot, but there's also some Orcs, Merry and Pippin get into all sorts of trouble, Faramir pops up and is awesome, Gollum gets crazier, and there's a lot of fighting scenes. Also Eowyn is badass.

And I'm glad so many people like The Book Thief!

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Laura wrote: "Cassi (Is out of glitter *sadness*) wrote: "I read all of them (starting with hobbit) but years later when people asked me what happened I was like "They walked and they walked and there were lots ..."

I did somewhat remember Eowyn. But I mainly remember lots and lots and lots of walking.

I don't think its the proper gateway book after a Harry Potter high.

message 64: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Not at all a good gateway book after that kind of read. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love LOTR (and yes Eowyn is awesome sauce), but the pacing and storytelling is incredibly different from Harry Potter as is the style and langauge. You should go back and read them again Cassi, when you're in the mood for a slow yet epic adventure and poetry.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Catie wrote: "I know LOTR turns some people off, but it's a big favorite of mine too."

I think I must've liked it well enough at the time. I'm not one who commits to a series if they've just read one book and didn't like it.

But later I didn't remember much aside from walking. Might give it another read someday, but there are SOOO many books to read in the world.

Jen Halligan (bookandlatte) | 44 comments OK! Here I go...

1 - The best book you read last year: The Hunger Games

2 - A book you've read more than 3 times: This could be a long list if I included books I wore out (literally) as a kid. As an adult I've read or listened to theHarry Potter Boxed Set books 1-5 at least, more than three times. I've only read books 6 and 7 twice, but I really want to read 7 again soon (my fav of the series, along with 3).

3 - Your favourite series: So hard to choose... so I'll list my top ones... Harry Potter (obviously!), The Hunger Games Trilogy, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Series... OK I'll stop. I tried to think of an adult series but couldn't think of any I like as much or more than the ones I listed. If I had to choose one I'd say Outlander, but I've only read the first 2 or 3.

4 - A guilty pleasure book: Twilight (but really, I don't feel guilty, I'm a proud Twihard)

5 - A book that made you laugh: Babe in Boyland and Hex Hall series!

6 - A book that made you cry: Marley & Me: Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog (OMG I was reading it on a plane and SOBBING... people thought something happened or I was crazy. Embarrassing). Also, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - I sobbed during this too but not as badly. I had to take a break (put the book down, cry, calm down, pick it up again... gahh those stones...).

7 - Most underrated book: Shiver

8 - Most overrated book: Off the top of my head.... Incarceron I still don't know how/why it won so many awards.

9 - A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving: The Hunger Games never thought I'd enjoy a book about kids that are forced to hunt each other down till the last one is standing (don't worry, I'm not giving anything away).

10 - Favorite classic book: Jane Eyre

11 - A book you hated: Hmmm... that's a strong word. Not sure...

12 - A book you used to love but don’t anymore: I'm afraid it might be A Wrinkle in Time. I started to re-read it last year and I ended up putting it down, couldn't get into it. I still want to give it another try.

13 - Your favorite author: J.K. Rowling and recently Melina Marchetta

14 - Favorite male character: Jamie Fraser from Outlander, and... Harry Potter.

15 - Favorite female character: Gah, so many... of the moment Sophie in Hex Hall... Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, and Lisbeth Salander from the Millennium Series

16 - Your biggest fictional crush: Don't really have one... if I had to choose, probably Edward Cullen from Twilight Series.... especially after reading the draft of Midnight Sun. Oh wait, or maybe Jonah Griggs from On the Jellicoe Road. Or... Peeta from The Hunger Games. Hmmm...

17 - A good quick read: Perfect Chemistry

18 - A book that disappointed you: Incarceron

19 - Favorite book-to-movie conversion: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

20 - Favorite romance: This is a hard one... a recent favorite is Anna and the French Kiss

21 - Favorite book from your childhood: Anne of Green Gables (I've read it easily 50 times or more).

22 - A book you can't wait for: Sisterhood Everlasting (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants #5, they're all grown up!), Hex Hall #3!!

23 - A book you've been meaning to read for ages: The Clan of the Cave Bear

24 - A book that you wish more people would read: Um... this is hard, probably the Harry Potter series, I'm always surprised when I meet people who haven't read them. Do. not. comprehend. Oh... and On the Jellicoe Road.

25 - Character you are most similar to: maybe a little Hermione Granger from Harry Potter and Anna from Anna and the French Kiss.

26 - A book that changed your opinion about something: The Power of One, I have an appreciation for boxing that I never had before... or thought I could have.

27 - Most surprising plot twist or ending: Demonglass (Hex Hall #2)

28 - Favorite book title: Can't think of one.

29 - A book everyone hated but you liked: Moby-Dick or, The Whale. Call me Ishmael.

30 - Your favorite book OF ALL TIME: Gah, of all time? Jane Eyre or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
