Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Crunch Time by Diane Mott Davidson. I haven't read it yet. I just got it from the library and was flipping through. I used the Amazon search feature and Andrew didn't come up. Oh well. I have other Andrew books. I was just hoping it would be in this one.

P.S.-- My niece's name is Sadie and I think it's cute!

Which Psy-changeling has a Drew or Andrew? I have that series.

message 556: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Tina, it's the latest book in the series - Play of Passion (Psy-Changeling, #9) by Nalini Singh

Ok, time for me start noting down the characters in the books I've been reading.

Tina "IRead2Escape" (tinar1121) | 1292 comments Vi, you just made my night. A name I need and a book I'm planning on reading soon. Woo-hoo!

Wow, he was only 17 then. Went on to front the Little River Band for a while, before coming back to Aus and had another huge career singing solo. I saw him do Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and he was good. He's retired now.

He was very young! I was watching a couple of John Farnham's videos to see which one to link to and he clarifed that he was not sick of singing Sadie, the Cleaning Lady b/c that is what launched his career. One video panned threw the audience and everyone was singing: young, old, long-haired, short-haired - it didn't matter - they all knew the song. I listened to several of his other songs and he is actually a very good singer.

message 563: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments The Psy-Changeling series also has a male Riley (Drew's brother.) They are Wolf Changelings so they are more prominent in those books with a Wolf hero or heroine (#3, #6, #9 and most likely #10, which is the Wolf Alpha's book) but the first book deals with the kidnapping of their sister so I think they both show up there.

Yep, I too sadly know all the words to Sadie, and Raindrops, etc, etc, he was very big here. Probably the biggest hit is The Voice from 10 years ago or so. You should google that one Lisa :)

Oh the priest! That's true!

Too bad I already read all those books. The only one I have yet to read is the one that hasn't come out.

Sandra, I watched several versions of The Voice and the one he sang in front of the soilers just brought tears to my eyes; beautiful. I was reading Wikipedia and they said when they reviewed that song in the studio, they knew they had a long-lasting hit.

I am almost caught up with the Psy-Changeling series. Thank goodness I hadn't gotten to Drew's, yet...lol. My luck has been running that a lot of these names were in books that I've already read. And I have way too many on my TBR shelf to re-read right now.

Great job, Jane, on the FAQs.

And yes, this Name Game Tournament will be an annual thing. So thank you to those who are working on a name spreadsheet.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I thought I had a Julian because he's a regular character in the Goldilock's Catering books by Diane Mott Davidson. But he's only mentioned (many times) in this book and never actually appears. Oh well I have other Julian books. Still annoying though. How dare she not include a regular character when I need his name for a challenge. He doesn't fall under the "evil character" rule.

Eeeek - how silly! Why do authors have to do that??

The second website on my FAQ list gives it the OK, so 'Hana' is fine to use in exchange for 'Hannah', Amanda :)

Tania | 644 comments I found a Kylie in Slave to Sensation - unfortunately she's dead. I thought I would ask if it could count as her death is the reason the whole book occurs and you see the impact her murder has on the whole pack and especially her brother.

So, Jane - can you read Slave to Sensation and let me know? :)

Yeah, I found myself cursing an author the other night b/c they were "close, but no cigar" with a character’s name needed to complete this list, LOL!

message 592: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Please tell me that I'm not the only one who immediately things "a name!" when I hear one from the list-on TV.

I was watching an episode of Midsomer Murders tonight and there was a Layla. I immediately thought-I need a Layla. Then I reminded myself that TV doesn't count.

message 594: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Every book I read I try to remember the names - and it is much harder with the audiobooks. As I drive, I try to recite the name (if it isn't the H/h) so that I remember it later to then write down. I'm not always successful :(

message 595: by Tania (new)

Tania | 644 comments The lack of girls names in the books I'm reading is actually starting to bug me. I've read four psy-challenging books in the last 3 days and have gotten 7 names from them. ALL MALE!!!!!!

message 596: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Yes - I've been thinking about this and I'm wondering if it is because most romance novels 'showcase' males more than females in the 'support' roles (so that we get another book from them)... And that the females that are showcased have either really strange names or incredibly traditional names, thus falling outside our list...

I'm having the same problem and wondering the same thing. My mind has bounced all around with the why, from "Is it me?" to "Where are all the women with these names?" to think whoever set this challenge up was out to drive me insane. I got one book that had some of the female names as secondary characters and I had to take them over the primary male characters just so I could mark some females off!!

message 598: by D.G. (last edited Jun 03, 2011 06:16AM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Actually I have a different theory regarding the proliferation of male names vs. female's. :)

I think there's just more variety in female names. Male names seem to have kept steady probably for hundreds of years while the ones for women have changed. For instance, here are the top 10 female names in the 1930s:
1. Mary
2. Betty
3. Barbara
4. Shirley
5. Patricia
6. Dorothy
7. Joan
8. Margaret
9. Nancy
10. Helen

Please note that NONE of these names are on the 2010 list even though you will agree these are still popular names today.

Meanwhile, here are the top 10 boy names for the same year:
1. Robert
2. James
3. John
4. William
5. Richard
6. Charles
7. Donald
8. George
9. Thomas
10. Joseph

7 of the boy names are in the 2010 list (counting Charles for Charlie.)

In general terms, a female name makes it to the top 100 with fewer numbers than the male ones. For instance, Anthony is #10 in the boy's list with 15,364 while the corresponding female name at #10 - Mia - has only 10,541. (Stats thanks to the SSN site.)
