I agree. An extra "y" does not make a character more interesting. Instead, I'm promoting the development of early wrinkles on my face as I try to figure out how the frig I'm supposed to pronounce your character's name with superfluous extra consonants and strategically placed vowels.

How the heck do you pronounce Lilya?

I think it's Lil-ya. That's how I take it anyway. It's a paranormal set in another world so there's a lot of made up names.

You should double check that one at pronounce names... They sound the same if the front part of the name is not emphasised... Mackayla may have two pronounciations...??

I did check and they weren't the same as far as I could tell.

OK - I just went and checked Pronounce Names and they don't list Mackayla but they have Makayla and Mckayla. Mckayla sounds like Michaela, but Makayla doesn't. Inogolo doesn't list it at all in any form.

Huh - Shows how much notice I take! We are looking for Makayla, not Mackayla! I had myself completed twisted. Hope I didn't confuse too many ppl. Just ignore me... :)

Jacob by Jacqueline Frank has 4 names if anyone is interested: Jacob (a given), Noah, Elijah, and Isabella.

OK am I nuts or did you give permission last night to use Michaela for Makayla? But now I don't see that.

Is it allowed or not? Or did I dream reading approval to use it?

I came on to mention that Something About You is good for 4 names: female Cameron/Camryn, Alex, Collin and Jack. I'm only 100 pages in and all names are well enough established to be used.

oh and Killjoy by Julie Garwood turned out to be good for names too: Noah, Avery, John and Sarah. And Carolyn/Caroline if the same ruling applies to the one made about Madeline/Madelyn.

Yes - sorry Mary - I was thinking that the list name was Mackayla - not Makayla. Makayla doesn't match Michaela according to the pronounciation sites. Sorry :(

Thanks Jane!! I have this tagged as one of my next-up books, and I still need all 4 of those names.

The last time I got a book with 4 names was like a month ago. Lately, I've been getting 1 or less per book.

I've been lucky and I've only had a couple with no names or just 1 name. Most of the ones that I picked up for a specific name ended up giving me at least 1 or 2 others.

I seem to get either a feast or famine. The historicals generally aren't good for more than one name at most... (And Simons turn up in most books!!)

Don't be put off by the slow start (first 30-50 pages) - it definitely gets better.

I'm in the middle of reading A Brush of Darkness and the main character is Abby Sinclair. I've also ran across a Brandon & a Robert. As an added bonus, Allison Pang (the author) is from Virginia and so you can use her for the geography category in the monthly challenge.

Daffodil - how is a brush of darkness, I was supposed to do it for a buddy read last month but never got to it (naughty buddy!)

I'm about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying it so far. I know a lot of reviewers weighed in negatively on Pang's world-building, but honestly I've not been lost at all. A lot of it is based on basic Fae concepts and the rest is easily figured out through context. I'll let you know if I run into any problems with it later. :D

Urg. I found a stack of audiobooks that I forgot I had. I looked them all up on shelfari and the only one that has any names-has names that I've already used. Out of 6 audiobooks you'd think there'd be 1 name that I didn't already have. Nerts.

I just read Bad Boys In Kilts by Donna Kauffman. In the three stories, The Chisholm brothers mention their oldest brother, Dylan in all three stories, but Dylan doesn't have any lines in the book. Just what you know from the other characters. Can Dylan be used? I want to say that I have gotten to know a little of Dylan to be used, but I don't know how much time he needs in a book to be considered. Am I making sense here?

I think he's the main character of The Great Scot.

Hard one Hina - in my FAQs the gist is that they have to actually hold conversations unless they are the evil character. I think I'll have to say he doesn't qualify :(

Just reread my rulings - is Dylan central to the story? If only a repeated reference, he's out. If he holds a key central role despite his non-appearance, then we'll let him in... Probably doesn't help much Hina - these things are so subjective.

Anyway-the hero's name is Dylan, which I did not know.

I'm reading My Lord and Spymaster and found 3 names I had already: Josiah, Sebastian and Adrian.

I figure some of you could use a Josiah!

Well yay! One of the audiobooks I found actually has 2 names that I didn't use yet: Clair and Natalie. Maybe I'll get lucky and a couple of others will pop up.

It's already been mentioned that Brooklyn Wainwright is the main character in Kate Carlisle's Bibliophile Mystery series. A man Gabriel also makes appearances in the series. And it's so funny, I finished reading the third book last night and was checking off Brooklyn, when I realized the murder victim was on the list too. Since she was alive in the first part of the book, I could check off Layla.

I'm going to use Landen for Landon. I looked it up on Pronounce names and it said they can both be pronounced as lan-den. Ignola as usual didn't have one of them.

Landen is a character in The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fiorde which I need to read for a game on paperbackswap.

My daughter and I are going to listen to The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordin on our road trip this weekend. The main characters are Carter and Sadie if anyone is still looking for them.

I feel like I've hit the jackpot - 2 books in a row with 4 names each (and one might actually have 5 - depends on whether or not one character reappears). How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf has Gracie, Cooper, Eli, and John (it's mentioned briefly that Buzz's real name is John), and Logan has Brianna (Briana), Dylan, Joshua, and Logan, and maybe Tyler. I'm pretty sure Tyler will qualify eventually, I think he's kind of borderline now, but I'm only about 1/3 of the way through the book and I'm pretty confident he's going to show up again - at least I hope he does since I already have a Logan and I want 4 usable names from this book! ;)

I have all of those Creed books (except the most recent one) in my TBR. I keep putting them off though even though I enjoy LLM.

They turn up about 65% of the way through. They definitely qualify :)

I thought I had a Chase but it turns out to be his last name. It's actually confusing because they call him by 3 different names. And not because there's an undercover type thing going on either.

The same book has a Nora, Savannah and Gabriel but I have all those already. Kiss of Crimson

It only gives me Nora - I've already picked up the other names... Why couldn't it have had one (or more) of those extensive female 'A' names??!!! (Do the parents want their child first on roll-call or something?? - 20 of the suckers. WAaaaay over-represented!)

Yeah I had already used all the names in it as well. Great book though.

It has been a while since I've had a book with 2 or more names.

Of the 20 female names, I only have 3 (Amelia, Annabelle and Avery.)

I am finding a lot of these names as middle names, is that the same as first name?

I already figured out you can't use middle names unless they are called it. On well,

Today I went thru the entire CT state library system and there are no books with Ashlyn, Kennedy, Makayla, Aiden, Brayden, Caden, so unless there are spellings I dont' know about although here Makayla is spelled Michela as we have a famous trial going on where that is the girls name.
