Thanks Tina :) So you would pronounce those names (Madelyn/Madeline) the same then too? I did when I was reading the book but now I'm questioning myself on if I read the name entirely wrong! lol Either way it's cool... just don't want to feel like I'm cheating here! I take my challenges very seriously :)

I take the challenges pretty seriusly, too...lol. I can tell you I have seen Madeline pronounced Mad-a-lyn and Mad-a-line. So, I think without hearing it, it can be pronounced either way.

I'm not sure if any one has asked this question yet but with alternate name spellings should we put the alternate spelling in brackets after the original name on the list just to clarify so there is no confussion incase someone should call in to question the name your using. I hope this makes sence :)

Good idea DG - I had incorporated a few of the answers into the rules at the beginning, but I'll do a FAC (using actual questions/answers) - probably sometime in the next 24 hours. ...I have a 5 hour drive today :)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I think the Zack/Zachary has been answered, but just to make sure:

If it is made clear at some point that their full name is Zachary but they are generally referred to as Zack, then Zachary can be ticked off.

Hi Rachel - I've hopped on to the internet and checked out 3 separate sites. Everywhere is noting that Madelyn is a short 'i' sound. This means it doesn't qualify to exchange for Madeline. Sorry :(

OK: here is the new rule for this one...

Up to 500 pages: check off 4 names
500 - 750 pages: check off 5 names
750 + pages: check off 6 names

Page numbering to be based off the mass market paperback edition where possible :)

No middle names. Has to be their first name, or, if they go by their second name - that name.

I suppose I just confused everyone: BUT - my name is actually Katherine Jane but I am known as Jane. Therefore IF I was a character in a book, the name viable for check off would be JANE, not Katherine.

Another (fictious) example: Lord Percy Alan Landon Summerville, Earl of Bookvale. He is known as Landon or Landy throughout the book. You could check off Landon.

Hmmm - I need to think on this. I was going with the Anthology ruling... I'll be back shortly - need a coffee to ponder my logic!

1.5 hours later - sorry, I still haven't pondered - I'm running around like a headless chook trying to leave home to get to a party 5 hours away. I'll get back to you hopefully in 5 or 6 hours :)

What if the animal talks and interacts with the characters? I'm reading Long Hot Summoning right now and there are two cats (Austin and Sam) that are basically familiars for the keepers. They probably have about as many lines of dialog as the people.

Good question Karen, I had only planned to use them for two names (Sean and Jake). And I did read them all in one day, one after the other (have I mentioned how dangerous immediate internet access to books is for me). :)

I'm kind of assuming that they would all have to have been published in the one book though for it to count for this challenge. I've checked goodreads and unfortunately - no luck.

But... just because they're so preeeetty I'll put them up here again ;p

RULING: I'm going to allow this BUT you have to read a minumum of 3 novellas in that author's series with a maximum of 4 names allowed for check off for the total series read... The total of the (minimum 3) novellas MUST exceed 150 pages. (Logically, they should hit around 300 pages...)

Basically I figure that anthologies generally have at least 3 novellas in the book - and that each novella is around 100 pages...

So Karen - you need to pick up another of those pretty books to qualify to use the Denise Agnew books for the tournament. ;)

message 281: by Joy (new)

Joy Gerbode (wingsofjoy) Yeah well ... I was actually thinking more like Lassie, or a book only about animals like Watership Down ... though none of those names specifically are on the list. But I read quite a few books that are about dogs and cats, who are the main character ... seems like they should count, IF they happen to be a name on the list.

Just to answer the question where did the list of names came from.
